I am playing on Xbox so my list is more limited. But so far:
Kodiak (hands down my go to for being so versatile).
C-22 J Ventura (excellent fast plane with more old school navigation).
Kit-Fox Fox 2 (STOL, go anywhere bush plane).
Asobo Top Rudder 103 Solo (great for very low and very slow).
Carenado Seneca V - (A more in depth plane, that scratches my itch for the 310/414 or even the turbo arrows which are not available on Xbox)
I’ve also been wanting to purchase either the Islander or the Trislander. I know the Islander will come out with a high-fidelity version later.
But aside from the Trislander being more powerful, larger, and arguably more complex - are there any other differences between the two in terms of flight dynamics?
In other words, which of the two would you recommend? (Assuming the Islander will have updated cockpit in the future)
Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting your list here as your first action!
Some great choices there. I love the Fox too. Great fun to try and land off-piste.
Also fly the 103 quite regularly especially after a new World Update to check out POI’s.
It’s actually awesome you can get all those on Xbox. I guess where console loses out massively is all the great free mods, liveries and scenery additions — even though some good airport improvements are available on marketplace (but expensive).
I can’t answer about the comparison between Is and Tris landers as I didn’t pick up the Tri yet. Got enough on my plate! No doubt someone will be along soon to give you a good answer.
Thanks for the detailed replies fellas. You’re making it hard for me to resist but I must tell myself: you don’t need a new plane … you don’t need a new plane … you don’t need a new plane ……
Seems I made the right choice between them for the sort of flying I do now though, so that’s a comfort!
Sure, you made the right choice… but hear me out. You really should get a new plane.
I know exactly what you mean. This has been a slow month for great new plane releases, and all it has accomplished is it allowed me to catch up on another couple of great planes I have missed along the way.
Hah yea. I have not had much leisure time in recent months (some heavy life issues I’m going through which I won’t go into here) but the other day I bought the F-22 and thought whilst I was in the JF basket why not add the Concorde which was still on a bit of a discount. Don’t expect I’ll fly it much but I kept thinking about it so for £20 I thought sod it!
Oh and the previous week got the Ryan ST-A Special… which really is “special” actually. Week before that was the Stream UL + Twin Beech. And before that the Discus premium, Sting and Velocity XL. So yea enough!!!
I’m on Xbox as well and have both planes and yes there is indeed a difference with flying these 2 great planes. You need to pay attention to the Trislander much more than the Islander, carb heat will be your friend. Engines do fail if you fly the Trislander wrong, which is great imo. Both planes are top 5 for me.
Beech Twin 18 - Really liking this plane, landing and taking off properly is a fun challenge.
2.Trislander - A little more complex than the Islander in a good way.
3.The Goose - The sounds, the way it feels, landing on water!
Staggerwing - Started to fly this old gal again, so much fun, wish I could open the windows without turning damage off though.
Islander - Such a solid plane to hop around Islands and short fields.
Sting S4: I recently picked up the Piper Warrior II because I wanted to practice slow flying, circuits, power management, with steam gauges. Now I’d like something similar but with a glass cockpit. I know there are some default planes and payware (maybe the Jabiru, which I have) that might be suitable, but what about the Sting S4 - would it fit?
Velocity XL: I like touring aircraft like the Piper Arrows, the Beechcraft G36, Mooney, etc. The Velocity XL seems like a great fit in that group, but also something you could take low and fast and follow the terrain or run through canyons, which is something you wouldn’t really do in my list above.
The Sting S4 is unique. An ultralight with the creature comforts of a full sized plane. I really like it but I am not sure it is exactly what you want for your use case. It would do the trick though. And for the price? It is quite hard to beat.
The Sting s4 is possibly the best Ultralight in game.
However it is almost the total opposite of the Warrior II in terms of flight dynamics.
the Warrior II is an old school Piper that is heavy to fly. On landing with full flaps it will drop like a brick if you cut the throttle. The Warrior II with full flaps deployed needs a fair bit of throttle to maintain a stable descent.
the Sting S4 is an example of the new school of super low weight ultralights. It accelerates and climbs quickly but descends more like a glider. Even with flaps out it does not lose speed quickly and it easy to overspeed the flaps if you are not paying attention.
Note, both have very realistic flight models that are true to real life and both are excellent aircraft, the difference arises because of the differences between the real life aircraft.
Not sure what to recommend in terms of glass cockpit piston singles. Maybe the Rob Young Turbo Normalised Bonanza mod ?? Other than that, the default c172 is OK, the Pipistrel Virus is a bit of a hidden gem and I do like the Husky though I rarely fly it these days.
====== MY SUMMARY ======
The worm has finally turned and the Kodiak has lost her throne! The Chancellor has overthrown the Queen and there are riots on the streets.
The Rebellion are gathering their forces at Alderan as we speak by fitting floats to all their X-Wings. Apparently they are in Final Beta phase of testing in zero-gravity (which is causing problems with the air inside - heard stories of the floats ballooning to half the size of the Hindenburg, which in turn is affecting their hyperspace travel ability, so they can’t make any solid attacks plans yet…) but we can’t hold out much longer! It’s been a long long time in a studio far far away
In other news, the 310R also had a strong week of votes so it may not be far away from claiming position 2 in the charts IMO. Those Arrows making a nice barrier - unless I find a way to separate them haha
… and I even updated my own list this week for the first time.
