YouTuber's, stop re-hosting add-ons

More and more YouTuber’s are creating videos about add-ons that the community is making and that’s fantastic. Although YouTuber’s are sharing add-ons via hosting websites like mega, etc. And/or stop re-hosting content through these websites. People stop this.

Note, if you’re a YouTuber and you do this, 3 strikes and your YouTube channel can be deleted if you “accidentally” shared a payware add-on. That author can easily DMCA your video and you will get a strike that cannot be removed.

The Flight Simulator community should be encouraging the authors, not promoting illegal and scummy ways to download add-ons.

Get add-ons through NexusMods and flightsim.to, support them and link that add-on directly. Don’t trust anyone else. If it’s from a hosting site, it’s most likely stolen.

If you see a YouTuber do this, call them out on it. The author deserves the credit, not a random 3rd-party hosting site. This also applies to community members also, share the direct links, not hosting sites.

very well said.

They get paid by the file hosters, that’s why they do it.

The content creators should prohibit such behavior, as these YouTubers are monetizing the work of them.

I’m confused I guess. I don’t know what a third party hosting site is. I’m just a simple man, that creates flight simulation YouTube content. If I see a third party add on that is worth we talking about, I will do a video on it. To be honest, I do not care were the third party add on link comes from. Because most of the time I see the addons come from X-Plane.org or or forums in their download sections for X-Plane platform.
And for Microsoft flight simulator platform so far, I see links here in this forum that direct me to https://www.msfsaddons.org , https://github.com/ and https://users.nexusmods.com mostly. So I’m guessing the above mentioned file hosting sites would be considered third party, because there the middleman. Unless I missing something, it’s the reason why I’m confused.

Now to be clear, if the addon developer reaches out to me and says please don’t use this link and instead use this link, I would be more than happy to comply. My goal as a YouTube content creator, is to get eyeballs on the content that I create. And simply reviewing or promoting their addons is a win win, for every one. At the end of the day, exposure to the developers creations from large channels and small channels channels like mine is what I would think it’s all about. Besides my channel is too insignificant for any one to care. Now for the self promotion plug, So if you do like my content throw a subscribe and like on my channel www.youtube.com/user/dionm01 , and thanks for the support. Shameless I know, but maybe one day I can start making money with this ■■■■ thing. Cheers Dion

@Dionsol465, a 3rd-party is using mega.nz, dl-file, dropbox, etc. YouTuber’s are re-hosting an authors work onto these sites.

If someone uses another person’s content and re-host it, I will inform them about and tell that author to DMCA that video. That YouTuber deserves the strike and channel to be known that they’re a scumbag. After 3 strikes, YouTube will delete the YouTube channel.

@quixtar84, to be honest I never knew they were making money off of this until I just now re-clicked a link and it says you can “Earn Money” from the downloads you get.

I found a few who use this to make money, very scummy. But don’t worry, I’ll inform all the creators. These YouTuber’s should be getting DMCA’s shortly. YouTuber’s will be scared of the Flight Simulator community now.

Yep. This is literally stealing.

No it isn’t, unless the mod in question is under a license that very specifically prohibits redistribution it’s perfectly legal, even if that is the case it’s practically impossible to enforce, there are dozens of website that have been redistributing mods for minecraft for years and nothing is done about them since unsurprisingly it take a lot of money to successfully shut down these sites, and another will pop up to replace it right away.

DMCA them if you wish but ultimately it’s a futile effort.

Imagine defending stealing other people’s work.

It doesn’t matter if it can be enforced or not. It’s still theft.

I’m not defending it, I’m just telling you the reality of the problem, big companies with very deep pockets have a hard enough time dealing with this, for the average person there isn’t a lot you can do, I tried in the past with mods I released and I would literally have to spend hours each day sending out DMCA notices, in the end it just was not worth the time.
