[1.39.0.0] SU16 Beta Survey - Performance (Xbox)

Hmmm I’m not sure this build is working quite as well as previous where WASM wasn’t working. Not all the time but blurring where ground details and LOD attempts to blend are fairly close and noticeable. One minute it looks fantastic then the next I’m scratching my head wondering what’s going on.
Viewing ground from cockpit doesn’t seem to look anything like as good from outside the aircraft which is strange when you consider the sim is having to load a lot more terrain. I appreciate the cockpit is also a complex space but I’m sure this didn’t used to be the case. Having said all this it is better than SU15 and nearly there but definitely this could be further improved.

Like I say it’s not the best example. But on a larger screen (and video better than screenshot) you see a black area between the detailed lights and the less detailed lights.

So the less detailed unload, and then you’ve got time until detailed loads into that area creating a band of darkness around

No pushback addons installed as it wasn’t working half the time

Definitely issues with this build. Stuttery in the menus and when flying, especially in the PMDG. I just did a 4 hour flight in it and lost over half an hour of time which is absolutely unheard of. I’d normally expect to lose 3-4 minutes on SU15

I have a friend on Xbox Series S who is really enjoying the Su16 beta for 2020, with almost no black screens. He asked that it continue like this, with greater improvements if possible, but without getting worse :rofl::rofl:. It is definitely the best thing that happened for the Series S, since the problems that arose with the launch of Wasm.

Several flights recently…
As usual some aircraft - especially the third party aircraft I’ve flown so far from Aerosoft - CRJ , PMDG- B 737-8, Just Flight - -Tomahawk , all perform really well. Smooth, no stutters, reduced last minute pop-in even in PG intense areas, much improved LOD in general. All of these aircraft have had some optimisation for Xbox, and I think that’s key really.
The aircraft with avionics that haven’t been particularly optimised for Xbox don’t do as well.
Yesterday flew EGLL 09R BPK departure to EDDV with the PMDG 737 800 and had a perfectly smooth flight throughout. Everything worked properly for me including the EFB - but I did have to re-enter my Navigraph and Simbrief credentials to get it all working.
Then flew a CRJ -700 sector from KORD to KDAY. Again excellent smooth performance throughout - excellent LOD. Both flights a big improvement on SU15 and both flights with PG on.

Tried a couple of short experiments - flight around EGHI area in Blackbox Trislander to check how well PG working now compared with SU 15 - seemed to be a big improvement as I had smooth performance and no broken triangular buildings - yes, there was a bit of pop in but much reduced and not as “last minute” as SU15 ( I always had PG off in SU15)
To really push it, I tried an EGLC take off on RW27 with the Just Flight Tomahawk and was astonished at how well everything went - smooth, no stutters, good LOD, no broken buildings and pop-in was very acceptable - it happened but not much and not too close in….
Just to throw a wet blanket in, I did try a flight with the FFX P180 Avanti EGLC-EGJJ off Rwy 27 and had to abandon due to stutters - there was reduced LOD and it was difficult to pan around the cockpit. Will do a couple more tests with non-optimised aircrsft or avionics- I think the Collins Proline struggles on Xbox.

And that raises a point for me: the release notes for 1.39.0.0 tell us that there are features for the Primus Epic 2.0 Integrated Avionics System and the UNS-1Ew Flight Management system. We don’t currently have any aircrsft in MSFS2020 with those navigation systems - the Just Flight F28 and BAE 146 both have UNS but it is Just Flight’s proprietary system so separate to this one. As we know that avionics on an aircrsft has a huge effect on performance, especially on the Xbox, are the MSFS team going to allow us access - even temporarily- to aircraft fitted with these systems as part of the beta?

My first few flights looked better than the public build, so I was initial very optimistic.

But, I also had 3 CTD’s in my first session—2 hours of testing. I can’t remember the last CTD I had on the current SU 15 release.

I did have one successful flight in the PMDG 738, and though I see some improvements with LOD, I would have to say overall I would prefer the current build to this.

I also had lots of title pop-ins.

Overall promising, but needs more refinement in both performance and stability. I look forward to the next few builds.

Please do not rush this!

I have found that in general, the new build performs great. The only problems at the moment are that the menus and the world map are extremely laggy and non responsive. Quite often I have to exit the world map and go back to make it responsive again.
Another issue is that time is being lost during flights. A friend of mine had a 30min loss of time on a 4 hour flight last night.

The timing issue may be a difficult one to resolve - as clock slow down typically happens under high processing loads and we’re probably pushing Xbox close to its limits now…

I get worse performance in the PMDG 737 with beta than in SU15 :frowning: Regarding the time loss, for me it is approx. 3-4 minutes per hour of flight, same for both PMDG 737 and 777.

I remember the time loss issue from a few sim updates ago (like… 2022?) but it got fixed and didn’t happen for me for a loooong time.

Yes it’s disappointing that the PMDG doesn’t perform very well. The V2 Neo however is running like a dream!

I’m finding that when on the runway either take off or landing, the runway textures not too far away are blurry and can noticeably see it rendering. I’m sure this wasn’t the case in previous build.

Back on SU15 to compare and it is noticeably smoother than the current beta, especially in the PMDG 737 and WT 747. The previous, non-WASM, build was definitely better than this one

Yes I absolutely agree. I wonder if there’s anyone in the know that can offer a definitive answer as to whether WASM requires significant memory that would negatively impact on performance? Perhaps that’s what we are seeing here?

So strange , same console different experiences, I fliyng pmdg 738 really smooth, except for the efb that doesn t works( doesn t matter to me),and the time that does not synch ,but it s an old issue. I tryed today a KLAS -KLAX and everythings go nice, yes , ok, a little of imperfection here and there but no CTDs!

I haven’t had a problem with the PMDG aircraft either apart from the EFB map and fuzzy text on cockpit buttons. The 738 and 777F run very smoothly. I do lose a bit of time in the air but only about a minute or two during a 2 hour flight. I’ve left the beta now, however, as the menu navigation is very stuttery and slow to respond to inputs, which is quite annoying.

It may be that in addition to enabling support for UNS and Primus, I suspect they may be thinking about bringing some aircraft from 2024 to 2020? Who knows. It would be interesting. I would buy an A330 here for my 2020. They might make a good profit doing that, although it could take away the prominence of 2024, but I think anything goes.

I’ve found that if you leave the PMDG B737 EFB moving map on, you will lose a lot of time. My guess is that the time loss comes when the processor gets heavily loaded. I also notice the time loss on ground at busy and highly detailed airports. You get a few stutters and suddenly 2-4 minutes time loss. I just use the EFB for performance calculations then keep it off during the flight. I also keep static aircraft to no more than 50%, have live and AI traffic kept off and have very low levels of ground vehicles and ramp workers. This all helps a great deal. Personally I don’t see an easy fix for the time slow down - we are using Xbox series X right up to its max capability now and we have to make our own trades. It’s easier to make a few small adjustments in MSFS2020 than it is in MSFS2024.

Yes, the EFB map has caused fps drops/stutters since they released the EFB. I never leave it on the map page… BUT in the SU15 there were no stutters/no fps drops and no time loss with the map off, in SU 16 beta I get stutters and fps drops even if I completely disable the tablet.

I also have the ground vehicles/aircraft etc. density set to 0, live traffic off and I still get stutters and time loss in the SU 16.

@Matt831064 @SheikElGebel
What settings do you use? PG off/on? LIve traffic? weather? Ground vehicles density? Rolling cache?
How do you set up the PMDG aircraft? Do you start with cold and dark and do everything manually? Do you fill the flight plan manually or through Navigraph?

I would like to copy your settings. My console is fresh after factory reset, freshly installed MSFS and the performance for me is noticeably worse than in the SU15.

Yesterday I was playing around a bit with the 777F and found that if I load the ‘runway’ panel state, but leave the FMC ‘empty’ - no flight plan, weights etc., the performance is much better. I do not know if it would stay this way because I only did a 5 min flight to check something else… but it was stutter free.

I also leave the EFB on the performance page to avoid any performance issues, have all traffic set to 0 and have PG off. Yet still I was getting huge time loss (around 7 minutes per hour) in the 738 on SU16 beta. Went back to SU15 and lost around a minute over a 3 hour flight

I ve got PG ON and live weather ON , no live traffic , no AI traffic,
Density of aircraft and working vehicle about 20 , no fauna no car traffic no boats,
For beta tests Im using to upload my flight plane, weight , fuel etc etc directly from FMC.
Rolling Cache set to 8.
I had to renew the subscription to Navigraph because otherwise the ones for the 738 were too old (October 2023), and some of my usual routes were not working (especially the one for my city), but I don’t think it s matters. It is just to be as precise as possible to have a better comparison.
Series X, livery for pmdg 737, livery for 320V2,
