9800X3D Report

I just saw a video about the 9950X3D that shows much better numbers over the 7950X3D, if you need the extra cores. Might be worth waiting for that one if you do.

Very speculative given there are no 9950x3d’s released yet so take it with a big grain of salt! Would be great though if true!

I’ve been doing a fair amount of Handbrake encoding. It loads all 16 cores pretty well, and uses around 45 GB RAM.

For me, the 9950X3D would be the only upgrade I’d be interested in. But that’s years away. I’ve got my current CPU tuned pretty nicely for the sim.

I have a 5800X3D and was considering upgrading to AM5 and going for the 9800X3D but I think I’m going to wait for 1) MSFS 24 to come out so we can fully evaluate how well the new architecture utilises cores, and 2) CES 25 early in the new year to see about the 9950X3D as we don’t fully know yet how well MFSF24 will utilise more cores.

It could be that the 9800X3D remains the best CPU even when the 9950X3D comes out for MSFS24, however until we know whether/how the V-Cache will be spread between both chiplets it is worth the wait in my opinion plus the prices of the 9800X3D should come down a little as AMD tend to aggressively price newly released CPUs.

I thought there was a big issue with people trying to downgrade from a 7900X3D/7950X3D to a 7800X3D (benchmarkers) with core parking still stuck on the old settings and caused a slow down in performance going back to an 8 Core, it required a fresh install of windows / eventually it could be resolved by removing old chipset drivers in special steps then installing the new ones. 9800X3D may have had same behavior with the system still used to the 16 Cores.

Wow, that sounds amazing! Wish I wasn’t on Intel!

Actually, I think the issue was going from a CPU that didn’t have any CCD technology (like a 3/4/5000 series Ryzen CPU and upgrading to a new x3d CPU that had 2 CCD’s.

At any rate, just use Revo Uninstaller (the free version) to clean up and totally remove the chipset drivers and you’re good.

Last friday I upgraded my 5800x3D to the 9800x3D (and new motherboard and RAM)
Combined with my RTX 4080 it’s a beast.
Early next year will be upgrading the 4080 to 5090 when that launches.

But it’s already a massive upgrade in MSFS 2020.

I have the chip waiting on a board to install, I do have my 5800X3D which I feel will probably not see any boost in other games but possibly a little in MSFS. I fly in VR and I was seeing some user post that going from a 7800X3D to 9800X3D on a PIMAX was causing bad lag spikes and worse performance. I hope that was an isolated case and some also had to verify PCIex version set ups in bios, some were on wrong 3.0 vs 4.0 etc. Main reason I did the upgrade was just for a 4 NVME board with no PCI lane stealing. But I only have 3 nvme right now and I have a rare x570s that does allow 3 nvme at full 4.0 4x and keep GPU at 16x

Please let us know which board you’ve found to accommodate 4 x M.2 at full speed, as this is a move that I’ll probably be making, in the New Year.

I currently have 2 x 1GB M.2 and have no room for any more.

I think the Tuff 670-E can run 4 M2 UNLESS you use one of the SATA channels?

At least I hope I’m not having a slowdown using 4 1gb Samsung980s

Only options would be a ASROCK x870e Nova for 4 nvme at full speed while keeping GPU at 16x. I have the Taichi Lite on way which does support that but it is EATX so a little larger. the NOVA is ATX and the other options I can only find that does that are the x670e boards, the ASRock Steel Legend x670e and the MSI Tomahawk x670e. I wanted the x670e Tomahawk which is readily available and on sale for under $250, but they have a problem with WD SN850X nvme drives in the 1st slot and MSI has not fixed it, and my OS happens to be on a WD SN850X, but if you have Corsair or Samsung or any different brand then it should not be an issue.

I’ve currently accumulated a Samsung 970 and a Samsung 980, both at 1TB, so would be most likely to go with Samsung, probably with a 4TB model.

For me, it doesn’t seem to matter how big the storage is. It still gets filled. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Until recently, I had a motherboard MSI MAG X670E Tomahawk WIFI, which I gave to my son. All the M.2 slots were occupied and they were working at full speed, along with the RTX 4090. I had two Samsung drives, one MSI drive, and one Gigabyte drive installed. I never encountered any issues.

I am not editing the post I wrote above because I have an important message that I want to remain visible.

There is a high probability that the disk you’re having issues with will be fine if you use the Secure Erase option in the BIOS for the WD drive. Afterward, format the disk and create a partition – it should now be visible in the M.2_1 slot.

If Flight 2024 does support more than 8 cores, it could be a good idea to wait for the 9950x3D. This would require some patience though

Amidst the complaints, he does report some interesting numbers showing low utilization on the 7800x3d and GPU. I know it’s just one report, but not a good sign on 9800x3d benefits. Maybe a good sign of buying something cheaper instead for us?

Just a guess but,

Maybe GPU and CPU are just waiting for data streaming from the servers which are not coming.

Also how did he manage to get only like 40fps at 1440p on ground ?
I had reach +100 at 4K …

The moments where I was able to fly my 9800x3D and RTX 4080 were working fine. The GPU load was at 98/99% and CPU was around 40%.
