I’m sure MS/Asobo would prefer not to release WUs peicemeal but just three or four for the whole African continent. The negotiations and decisions required may take considerable time in some of these places wheras MS will have had all the permissions they needed for the US and Europe even before alpha testing.
That’s not what they did for Europe and Asia, both of which got World Updates for individual countries. So I’ll doubt that.
Once again it’s also a matter of available data. South America is no different.
Anyway we are going around in circles, I wish I had a magic wand but I don’t.
You can’t just randomly jump back to an argument you made previously, and then say “we are going in circles”. We’re not, and I have already agreed that data availability might be a problem. Emphasis on “might”. I do not know for sure which DEM and photogrammetry data exists for which country and how easy or hard it is to license. I’m willing to bet that you don’t, either.
Now, would you kindly explain how you came to the conclusion that Microsoft / Asobo “would prefer not to release WUs peicemeal but just three or four for the whole African continent”, despite the fact that that is completely different to their previous behaviour?
I haven’t had a chance to redo these since the Alpha, but one of the things that blew me away about Flight Simulator was how amazingly close to reality it can be in some of the most remote areas. I recreated some real life flights I did in Uganda and Tanzania
Kidepo Airstrip → Entebbe, Uganda
Songwe, Tanzania
There are indeed big data holes in the African scenery, but there are also many places that are 1:1 spot on. Even if it looks barren in the sim, it might actually be really close. The continent is also HUGE, so I wouldn’t write off a flight there if you’ve seen some underwhelming locations. There are also a lot of hidden gems to explore.
Yeah man Cairo, Egypt (Where I’m from) looks like FSX compared to cities in the US
I am honestly not trying to offend. Just discuss/debate the topic.
The point I am making is I’m tired of people coming up with reasons why an update cant happen.
I’m based in Chicago and have no actual tie to Africa. The point was raised - what about South America? My response is “yes! Why not South America as well?”
Regardless of whether half the members of this forum are experts in international law and foreign regulatory environments… I dont start listing 54 countries and associated regulations from each of these places. We don’t need to look for reasons why not. We need to be creative as to how.
Africa, for whatever reason, seems to cause people to say “no! We cant do Africa for x, y and z reason.” I am sick of people telling me why it can’t happen. No one seems to think about what might be possible?
Why aren’t people saying “maybe photogrammetry isn’t possible but at least we can do a major airport update? Entebbe had major aviation history happen there. Cairo is a major destination. The airport’s proximity to the stadium - id like to re-create that scene from Invictus. This could be a good start.”
African major airport update could be a good place to start. After all, there’s been repeat updates to USA, city updates, piecemeal Europe updates… why cant people be creative about what might a viable/piecemeal Africa update look like?
Crazy how tones change when places like Africa or Caribbean scenery development subjects are brought up in the flight sim community. Things that make you go hmmm…
Is it possible for MSFS to update World Updates when they receive them and not wait for every other month? Will it be WU 35 until they get around to other countries? If I am from India, Indonesia, Philippines. What number Update will that be?
I have a Nubia goat in Farmville, and it looks awesome. There should be Nubia goat herds implemented in an upcoming Africa SU.
Agreed. Instead of doing the 50th European world update for areas that are already well modeled, Asobo should do some world updates for areas that are lacking eg Africa, South America Central Asia etc.
First off, everyone kindly cease engaging in argumentative behavior.
Secondly, please be informed about the actual challenges (Slides 12-15) behind how MSFS has to render the Earth in detail. It’s directly pertinent to the misconceptions being raised in this thread about how hard or easy it actually is.
Thanks.
Yes, good point Unskilled56.
And I agree with you
I’m flying around the west African coast and finding the scenery disappointing. Presently FOOL to FOOY in Gabon. I’ve seen obvious glitches, colours that look odd and towns & cities missing landmarks. I’m wondering if I should cancel & find somewhere that’s better quality scenery. Has anyone else had the same experience in this part of the world? Are we in dire need of a World Update for Africa?
I think Jorg said in one of the recent Q&A sessions that they’re working on an Africa WU, but it will take some time as it’s a big continent. Sometime next year I would guess
It will come in time. They tend to focus world update efforts where:
- people fly most
- good quality data is available
I suspect Africa is low on the list because of both of these reasons. Not a lot of people (comparatively) fly through most of it outside of the more modern, densely populated areas.
And I suspect outside of these small modern areas, good DEM, satellite and PG data is not available. This type of data is typically commissioned by national governments or other businesses doing geo-based work on behalf of said governments. With Africa being a continent full of poor, 3rd world countries, I’m sure that burning money on this kind of data is probably something that’s not very high on the list of said governments.
Ya I’ve been touring South America and Africa since SU11. They both need love.
Absolutely. There are so many options for interesting flights in Africa. But if you do not have enough data, there is very little they can do about it.
My first goal in MSFS was to fly in every African country. I am happy I did that.
Well, I’m going to carry on around Africa anyway, but it is a shame that quality is often so poor. Useful feedback here, thanks.
