Air cooler for 5800X3D

I followed this guide from Noctua:

AIOs/Water coolers are overkill for Ryzen x3D CPUs, they are very power efficient compared to Intel CPUs.

Just a point of order here, modern CPU’s (like the 5800x3d) run hot because both AMD and Intel now utilize boost algorithms to boost clock speeds until a preset thermal limit is hit. According to Intel and AMD, 90c does NOT necessarily mean a modern cpu is overheating. The 5800x3d is rated to run continuously at 90 degrees c, and it will boost until it reaches 90c or until reaches it’s maximum boost clock speed.

Please don’t take my word for this, watch the following video where DerBauer interviews an Intel thermal engineer about high temps and boost algo’s.

Actually that was my initial assumption of not changing anything. My current cooler can dissipate 180W. Nevertheless the issue with TDP is that there’s some lack of standardization, so while it puts you in the ballpark, it isn’t the most precise measure. Hence I was looking to have way more headroom. Noctua has a very interesting article about TDP. They instead use Noctua Standardised Performance Rating (NSPR) measure which… is another measure that lacks standardization :rofl: But at least it has a better specification than TDP, which you don’t always know what the manufacturer measured.

That is the most probable scenario for me, undervolting and seeing what happens in summer. It’s been ages since the last time I had a desktop so I’m kinda lost with current tinkering, but I’ll jump into it. I’ve also read that undervolting makes it more stable.

I just installed my 5800x3D and it is amazing (came from a 5700x). I did a 1500ft alt flight around downtown Sydney with everything on Ultra, locked at 60fps, 4K and the thing barely broke a sweat! It sat at 25% utilisation and 65C with a 240mm Deep Cool Infinity AIO.

I then tried it in VR, up Rez to 4k, with a mix of med / hi settings, leaving at 60fps and the stats on the chip were about the same! The 4080 was at around 80% in both scenarios.

Suffice to say the chip is incredible. It is feeding the 4080 plenty to do and with tonnes of overhead remaining.

I wouldn’t stress about the heat. Get a nice AIO and take to the skies!

The CPU Cooler is one thing, but airflow is critical too. So also make sure you have you case arranged without any obstructions and ventilated correctly. It doesn‘t help if the CPU cooler creates a pocket of warm air inside the case with no way to dissipate it to the outside.

Personally I have thee fans blowing in from the front and three sucking out. Two on top and one aft behind the CPU. The more fans you have, the quieter it gets because the fans can run slower. Good fans are extremely quiet below 60-70% and only start getting noticable at high speeds.

I‘ve been using a BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler since I switched to the AM4 platform with three BeQuiet 120mm (out) and three Noctua 120mm (in)

Alright just an update, finally got the 5800X3D.

It’s a game changer. First time I see my GPU at 100%. I actually had to halve the framerate to 50% because I want the GPU to be cool without revving up the fans and, let’s face it, it’s a flight sim, 30 or 40FPS are more than enough, we’re not dodging bullets yet (unless someone makes a mod or MS releases Combat Flight Simulator 2024 too)

When I switched the 2060 12GB for the 6800XT keeping the same processor (3700X) didn’t feel as much as a significant jump. I wasn’t all anger because I bought the GPU after the crypto meltdown and got it cheap. Now that I switched CPU to the 5800X3D I see the real GPU jump. The 6800XT really crushes frames.

I still see hiccups at very busy airports like KLAX or KJFK. These are known to be fps killers and I’m pretty sure it’s the lack of optimization on MSFS engine.

Now, to the temps: it runs way hotter than my 3700X with the same cooler when running Cinebench R23, around 10C hotter. My 3700X completed the test at 70 something, the 5800X3D does it at 80 something. This is out of the box, without changing anything nor using PBO.

Nevertheless, running MSFS temps are about the same if not a tad lower. So, I’m not complaining and I’ll wait for summer to see what happens. Have to say that the ID Cooling SE 224 XT Basic actually does a great job.

So, all in all:

  • If anyone switching GPUs, make sure that your CPU can keep it up. It’s a known thing, I know, but first time I actually feel it in the flesh. Even in the old times of 3DFX Monster cards (yeah I’m old) I hadn’t seen it so interdependant.
  • If you have an acceptable cooler, don’t rush to get a new one (as I was going to) and first test real world scenarios and not just benchmarks.

I also just completed the same upgrade 3700x to 5800x3d with existing 6800 xt and I am astonished at the improvement ! I don’t concern myself with FPS but the image quality in VR at full ULTRA settings is now amazing … I can read streets signs (that I have never even seen before) whilst hovering … I did go with a H115i AIO cooler from corsair as I got both cheap and it runs around 60 degrees.
Best single improvement to my flight sim exeperience so far !

You may already know this, but the 5800X3D can run all day at 85°C without starting to throttle. AMD designed the X3D chips to remain in boost longer as temps got higher - up to (I believe the spec is) 91°C, at which point they throttle.

Do you want to run 80°C all day? I don’t, because no matter what the spec is, heat does wear out those teeny-tiny silicon racetracks over time.

I’ve sometimes wondered whether my 5800X3D could work a little harder in the sim, since I’m usually right at 60-63°C during flight. But I monitor my hardware from time to time, and the cores are almost always at max boost frequency. So I guess things are looking good. FTR, I do have Kombo Strike (Level 2) turned on in the system BIOS.

I’m hoping we need to start worrying about temps when MS2024 becomes a reality. Like you said, we’re dealing with poor core optimization in the current sim. I sure hope there’s gold at the end of that there rainbow… :pray:

I agree. My 5800X3D, with PBO on, boosts and peaks at 90 and then drops to high 70s low 80s running flat out. Let’er rip I say. 4090 VR 35-72fps flatout all day.

I’m running at the same temps, but it’s still cold here (summer gets >40C, we’re currently at 25C on a warm day, spring is just beginning), on the air cooler without having to ramp it. Perhaps I’ll switch to a water cooler later but if in summer temps will be 15 more than now then I’ll be running at ~70-75 and I can live with it.

Amazed at what the 5800X3D can do. I had to cap the frames at half the refresh rate because the 6800XT was ramping up too much and tbh for the sim, 30-60fps is more than enough.

I been trying to figure this out and I might of bought the wrong one or I don’t know if it might work.

I bought the scythe Fuma 3 CPU Air Cooler, Intel LGA1700, LGA1151, AMD AM5/Ryzen 120mm, Dual Tower, Black Top Cover

Do you guys think this might work on AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D?

If someone could let me know if it will work or If I should return it and what which one do you guys think would be good but not so expensive.

That cooler is listed as compatible with AM4 / AM5. Pretty sure you won’t have a problem if you use the right mount plate that should be included in the box. Nice looking cooler!

The biggest potential issue with any air cooler is RAM clearance. But the Fuma 3 has an asymmetrical design that all but guarantees clearance.

I’m putting together my new AM5 system, and the Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler I installed doesn’t have an offset design. It clears my RAM by about 3mm. :sweat_smile:

Scythe Fuma will do fine, i fitted it with an AMD 5900 in my daughters. No thermal problems at all.

I had a Noctua D15s for my 5900x and 5800x3D and all I can say is that my current 360mm AIO isn’t much better for thermals or noise.

I had my 5800X3D on a custom loop, and switched to an air-cooler. I bought a water block for my 3090 Ti and put it on the loop instead. All that heat from the GPU furnace is now being exhausted out the top of the case, and these new(er) AMD processors really don’t generate much heat. I remember you could heat a house with the early AMD CPU’s. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Pffft. My DR4 Pro has the fan on the highest slot and it still pushes a bit on one of my Corsair Vengeance RGB sticks. XD

I actually ran Memtest86 on it to make sure it wasn’t causing errors with the fan, and it was error free. I’ve actually oc’ed them from 36 GB 3600 to 4000 with no problems. I was initially concerned fan vibrations could cause an issue, but it’s not.

Not saying I’d do this again, though. I got them in a parts lot for another project and decided to see if I could use them to upgrade my main PC from my old 16gb 3000 setup.

I guess the 7800x3d will spoil you on how cool it runs. I didn’t realize the 5800 was so notably hotter. The single radiator D12 on the 78 never gets out of the 60’s.

isn’t AMD Ryzen 7 know as AM7

AM4 and AM5 are the CPU socket designations.
The CPU’s are labeled Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, or Ryzen 9.

The 5800X3D is an example of a Ryzen 7 CPU.
The 5600X is an example of a Ryzen 5 CPU.
Both are compatible with the AM4 socket.

The 7800X3D is also a Ryzen 7 CPU.
The 7950X3D is a Ryzen 9 CPU.
They are both only compatible with the AM5 socket.

The new 9000-series CPU’s will be compatible with the AM5 socket as well.
There will be Ryzen 5, 7, and 9 series CPU’s.

It’s their equivalent to Intel’s naming convention.

AM4/AM5 > LGA 1700

Ryzen 5, 7, 9 > Intel i5, i7, i9

5000, 7000, 9000 > Intel 12th, 13th, 14th Gen

But that’s why I stick to exact model numbers, like a 7800x3d. Then you know exactly what you (or others) are dealing with. Saying you have a Ryzen 7, or i9 CPU is virtually meaningless because it covers multiple CPU’s with different specs.
