Anyone who has an HDR capable monitor and hasn't tried using it yet needs too

I hooked mine up today. Changed my life!
Quantum improvement over my 2K 27" 400 nit monitor (which will be moved to my office desk.)
My 3090 Ti is running a bit warmer, and its fans are working pretty hard. I guess that’s to be expected when going from 2K to 4K.

Seriously, it looks amazing in 4K, and the in-sim performance seems to be quite good still. I know it will take some hits in places like KLAX and other difficult terrain.
The HDR color space looks gorgeous, and the detail…the DETAIL!

So thank you @Vibstronium for this excellent suggestion.
BTW - I don’t know what that reviewer was talking about re: the fan noise. He must have been using it with a fanless computer. :stuck_out_tongue:

I have not tried HDR in the SIM yet. Do you need to have HDR turned on in Windows in order to get HDR setting turned on in the SIM or are they completely independent?

It is required to turn on HDR in Windows in order to enable the sim’s HDR10 output mode.

I have HDR turned on all the time on my PC and I’ve noticed every time my Adrenalin driver gets updated it autodetects my Samsung 4k Qled HDR monitor and sets the pixel format to YCbCr 4:4:4. I’ve always had to change it to RGB 4:4:4 (full RGB).

When I looked into it it seems YCbCr has a wider color range which is better for HDR however full RGB is brighter and therefore pops better on my Qled monitor. Seems like full RGB is the way to go since that is a standard for PC’s but given I use HDR sometimes I wonder if given the time and effort YCbCr 4:4:4 could be better?

The look of a HDR display will depend on the capability of the display.
The brightness of the display is indicated in “nits”.

The numbers behind HDR is the number of nits that can be displayed.
400
500
600
1000 (also called HDR 10+)
1400
400 True Black
500 True Black

HDR1000 or HDR10+ is usually the minimum you want to have.

I have a TCL HDR TV that is only spec’d as HDR and Dolby Vision.
It reports to Windows 10/11 as having 1500 nits.
FS2020 displays HDR10.

You can calibrate your display in Windows 10/11.

I’ve used that program to calibrate my 4k HDR monitor and it does look great all around, even in MSFS. However, others have posted that color profile is not used by MSFS?

I don’t know.

If so, I guess the color calibration in Windows is for Windows and the apps
that want to use it.

FS2020 sure looks better in HDR versus non-HDR, SDR.
Although, FS2020 looks good in SDR.
