Asobo, night lighting is good in patch #5! It just needs a little tweaking

You think it’s OK? Take a night flight along the eastern seaboard of the Greek island of Rhodes and you may not feel that way.

Sorry folks, but the new night lighting over rural areas look ridiculous to me. A giant step back in realism, in my opinion. The old night lighting was much better. Here’s a screenshot over west Texas.

Spoiled city lighting. Lighting has become like in the X-plane. Somehow everything is on the line. Some kind of squares. Is it normal? Something I don’t like this. It used to be better. There is no individuality now. There is no city soul. All lighting has become artificial. Horror. Bring it back!

Lol. Wow fail. Was better before…

I think the night lighting is a lot better since we got rid of that sepia mask or at least it was toned down a lot. I like to add a little more contrast with the Nvidia filters and I think it looks amazing. I don’t care if it’s not 100% realistic what the eye would see IRL. I mean I still look at a computer screen, might as well tune it a bit

No filter:

If they fix the rural roads then it’s perfect.

Edit: and make moving cars more visible. And maybe police cars

Whilst lighting is not high on my wish list as far as fixes, I would like to add my agreement that it doesnt look as good as it did across rural areas at least. All settings on ultra with this pic

I agree that visibility-draw distance is greatly improved , but rural areas and national highways have to be filtered out of the general lighting map from their OSM/Vector data. I also agree that lights from the head on traffic(white-yellowish headlights) and moving away from perspective traffic(red taillights) should be visible from the air(the same way XP does it).

As for the rest of the problems that make night lighting look artificial, I proposed some solutions above, that could be used to make it look more random and organic.

It’s in a good place right now to start making it more realistic and natural looking. But still a way to go.

School me on thes Nvidia filters you speak of. Other than up to date drivers, and the old school Nvidia control panel for for some game specific settings, I’m not sure about the filters.

Thanks

As far as cars go, my very small gripe is that they always move the same speed. What I mean is down low they should appear to move faster then up higher. From 5000 feet, the cars look like they are going 150mph! LOL

They often move erratically and very unrealistically anyway to be honest. I dont think they touched the road traffic since they released publicity material over a year ago. Even then people complained about the cars bumping into each other, going in two directions on roundabouts and going backwards and forwards in cul-de-sacs. Complaints seem to have been either ignored or dismissed as unimportant. Its a pity because when traffic moves properly it looks much more realistic.

You need to install Geforce Experience first. Then when the game is running press Alt+F3 to bring up the game filter bar. I use these two filters below, at this order. Then I just fiddle those doo-hickeys and whatchamacallits around like a pro I am until it looks decent. It depends on your monitor. Note that these affect throughout the game so cockpit displays may be too bright or look weird. But you can easily turn this off when needed. Have fun!

I’d like to see some much dimmer house lights from buildings. The road only lighting as people have pointed out looks weird in rural areas without any house lights. In the cities it’s over come by the number of road lights so hard to notice.

I completely disagree with the thread title. There is just so much wrong with the night lighting that a few tweaks won’t be of any benefit. It needs a complete overhaul.

First and foremost they need to implement some of sort of atmospheric system to render the lights more realistically. They aren’t truly emmisive at all. Secondly we need flickering of lights at distance to further enhance immersion. Thirdly they need to get rid of this grid like pattern of lights everywhere. Fourthly they need to further enhance their global illumination render to better capture the bounce and spread of lights.

These are the first few steps that should be taken and then move from there. Next comes the variation of light colors. Proper implementation of traffic signal lights, car headlights and tail lights, emmisive lighting from the windows of buildings and skyscrapers. Then we need to further enhance the lighting at airports.

This is a long process and should take time. But proper implementation is necessary. Not half baked stuff that we have right now.

Me too, disagree to the title. Much to much light pollution.

For example: Cities are much to bright. Night lighting should be dramatically dimmed after midnight, slightly one hour before. Still some of us sleep tonight.
Or: Country roads are not enlighted here in germany, lightings ends at the city limits. Same for Autobahn.
Thats for the moment.
Big cities on the other hand should cause a light dome in cloudy and foggy situations, citiy lights should be reflected by the clouds.
Full moon should lighten the surface too.
Cars can cast light cones into the night.
And so on. Simulation is a beast.

Of course this needs massive raytracing , so lets think about that in two or three years with RTX40xx or RX7xxx.

Sorry, but that looks ridiculous. I’m amazed how some people can find this perfect.

How about we start with actually being able to BUY a RTX3080 first! LOL

Well, as a seasoned Xplane 11 player I can say that this is the Xplane 11 nightlighting and it looks absolutely stupid.

Just so I understand, people requested this to be changed from before?

Sounds like trolls voting, like the American Idol “Vote for the Worst” tactic.

As I recall what most of us were complaining about was the sepia mask issue, that and the red splodges of light on some highways. I dont recall people having an issue with rural lighting or asking for a massive increase in light brightness so that runway lighting 15 miles away can be seen as it can since this latest patch was released.

Exactly…it was mainly the sepia mask issue.

The sepia mask is still there, even at low altitudes.
