The X56 is the one I have too. A gift from a friend for custom building his computer. (â â â â nice gift! - I was willing to do it for beer!) Heâs now got a custom, high end PC for MSFS and loves this stuff. Iâm getting back into it after not playing since my Win95 days - my last âflyingâ was in Battlefield 1942âŠ
What kind of mapping have you done? I havenât even begun to explore the options.
I just recently switched away from the X56 in favor of a yoke (Honeycomb).
Initially (before getting the Logitech panels), I had most of the autopilot functions on the throttle switches and buttons of the X56.
This was the mapping I used at the time. It obviously changed after I got the Logi panels and eventually the Stream DeckâŠ
Oh, and I didnât switch away from the X56 because it wasnât doing it for me. I switched because Iâm going to be taking flying lessons once the whole covid thing settles down. The local flight school uses a C172. So I figured after 26 years of flying with a stick in my right hand and throttle in my left, it would be more helpful to get used to a yoke in my left and throttle in my right. Iâm telling you, it was a rough few days getting accustomed to that! My buttery smooth landings suddenly turned into looking like someone threw a plane shaped basketball down the runway. lol
I was going to ask if your plane was covered in ice, but you didnât say anything about that (when you couldnât take off). If youâre plane has ice on it, especially if itâs covered, itâs unlikely youâll be able to take off, especially above 4000 ft or so (if taking off at that altitude or above, donât forget to also reduce the mixture till you get to max rpm, ice or not)
Donât tell the FAA that I told you so, (they would really frown upon you for flying into known icing conditions with planes not rated for it), but, there are three âdeiceâ toggle commands available if you search under âAllâ - Windshield, Structure, and Prop. They are not bound to keys by default, but, âCtrl + Alt + dâ, âCtrl + Alt + iâ and âCtrl + Alt + pâ are available keystrokes that might be bound if a user were to be so inclined⊠(shhhh)
So - Iâve maybe 9 flights under my belt at this point. Mostly in props at low altitude - I like to look at the scenery!
Took off from Bishop without a flight plan. I used to climb those mountains, and wanted to see if I could navigate to Yosemite from just having played in that terrain so often. Was a lark to just head Northwest-ish and remember the land.
So - when I was flying through the Sierraâs, perhaps ten minutes into the mountains, it was interesting to watch the icing animation begin; until I could not see through the windscreen. I mashed keys to no avail. From there, until I passed Mammoth Lakes and Yosemite - I was pretty much stuck flying 3d person. No sweat: it was neat scenery. Partway down (West) from Yosemite on route to Fresno I noticed the windscreens were no longer iced. After that, the engine failed and I had to do the unplanned landing. Gotta say - one of the most fun experiences Iâve had in the game. Tense, if you get me.
So it was so cool, I had to take a screen to share with a friend - and, at this point - I am pretty sure that I paused the game. The plane looked fine, the windscreen was clear, and I could rev engines and turn knobs, etc⊠I just could not get the plane to move⊠thus I think it was 'Active Paused"
Anyway - thanks â oh and thanks for the tip about adjusting mixture; I would have never thought about that! Iâll also quietly note the respective key commands, and conveniently forget where I learned them
