As stated, I am not clever with tech stuff.
I have MSFS working fine at moment on existing PC. Am lucky enough to be able to buy new higher spec PC, mainly so I can fly VR (have just acquired Reverb G2 [version 1]).
New PC will have Windows 10 or 11 installed, with internet connected and running (my computer “Guru” will deal with this for me).
The steps I think(?) I need to follow to get MSFS correctly installed on the new PC MIGHT be:
- Launch Microsoft Store app - if not already on the new PC (may be built in to W10 or W11?), presumably can download it first;
- Log in to MS Store app (amazingly I do have a note of the email address and password for this!);
- Download MS Gaming app (think this is sometimes called Xbox app?); - is this step really needed, or can I launch MSFS 2020 without it? My existing PC has the Gaming/Xbox app, but I have no idea what it does. So maybe this step can be missed out?
- Assuming above steps (1) and (2) are correct, if I go to “Library” in the MS Store app, I should be able to install/download MSFS 2020 now - is this right?
- I use the brilliant (IMHO) MSFS Addons Linker, so if I use this also on my new PC, I shouldn’t need to worry about copying across existing Community Folder - is this right, or is my thinking haywire?
- When doing the first install of MSFS on the new PC, I think I will be asked which drive I want to use - as I will have two x 2TB SSD drives (let’s say they are called C: and D:), can I choose which I like? Are there any disadvantages to NOT using the “default” C: drive?
- Once 1-6 above done, Go Fly (he says hopefully…!).
I appreciate that I could very easily be missing some vitally important steps.
Can anyone please confirm any of the above, or let me know what I really should be doing?
Finally, from the research I have done, I don’t think I need to worry about whether the new PC is running Windows 10 or 11 - is this fair comment, or should I avoid W11?
Many thanks in advance, Alasdair (aka Flybasher…)
Or you could copy it from the old machine to the new machine maybe? I know you can do it with steam, Im not sure about the MS store version.

Yup your set up seems to make sense.
As for WIN 10 or WIN 11… I am using WIN 11 and the sim is now fairly stable, its been a long time and tweek tweek tweek. However, if you want to use VR, you may be better off with WIN 10 at this point. I use VR but I use the Quest2, which is not supported in WIN 11… At least Oculus (Meta) link cable doesn’t work well, I get a lot of stuttering and tearing. As a result I use the AirLink which as of yesterday is silky smooth (but not in Oahu with all the photogrammetry addon from FlightSim.to). I’m only running an i7 9700k and RTX2070 with plans to upgrade later this spring.
Once you’re in VR, you’ll never look back. I still fly pancake mode for Airliners though…

I’ll get a lot of flashback on this, but why not let it install on C ? It’s 2TB, that’s more than enough. Look through the forum and you may notice all the questions and problems posted with each update by users with custom installs. For close to 40 years, the system has always known where my programs are. I don’t have to bother with special processing instructions. I just click ‘update’. Keep it simple.

Hi FG, thanks for the post.
As you indicate, since I should have plenty of space on C:, I will let MSFS install there - this way I won’t need to worry/think about anything if there are updates etc., and will not change directories or anything either.
