Discussion + Poll: World Update V (1.17.3.0)

You are certainly entitled to your own opinion. It’s going to get better.

So far Sweden has been underwhelming.

I’m afraid it’s my fault …
in an old post I wrote: “the graphics are fine, but if we go ahead with a 50 Giga update, in six months I have to ask NASA for the hard drive”  "

I don’t know the details but after Dovetail released their two flight sims based on the code and I guess the market just didn’t respond for various reasons, they quietly dropped them both. Nothing on their website now about their flight sims. I checked on Steam and interestingly, MSFS Steam Edition now lists Microsoft as developer and XBox Game Studios as publisher. Dovetail is still listed as publisher on some or most (who cares?) of the third party stuff there for FSX:SE.

It’s only a guess but sure looks like entertainment rights reverted to or were bought back by Microsoft since FSX:SE is back under the MS umbrella. I can’t swear to it but I think Dovetail had been listed as publisher on FSX:SE. At any rate, the Dovetail “native” flight sims both have been removed from sale and died.

The Dovetail wiki page mentions some agreements to put Dovetail games on XBox so maybe Microsoft sweetened the deal to get rights back?

Hard to know but it looks like all Dovetail does for flight sims now is publish 3rd party content for FSX:SE and flight sim proper rights are back with MS. The other question is for training rights which Lockheed Martin has with P3D. It would be fun to know what kinds of deals Microsoft had to make there to bring back a flight sim that they have occasionally mentioned using for flight training which would seem to step on LM’s toes. So many questions…

Wow, what an update!!! Was able to open it once…Now I get a CTD every single time I try to open it. Useless…Have tried all recommended procedures to fix it and nothing…Thanks for all your hard work.

I am just curious as to the background of this opinion. Are you willing to expand a little? Then we can have a conversation instead of only posing one opinion against another.

Your nick says it all :+1:

You got rid that FSUIPC7 banner ? or is it still in ? I read in the other topic you use FSUIPC7 and MSFS crashed to CTD when its banner was shown.. These “recommended procedures” suggested to you in the other topic was to change the FSUIPC7 configuration (ini file).. can’t you temporary remove and reinstall FSUIPC7 later ? Check for updates..

Dovetail never had ownership of the FSX code. They essentially leased it, but full ownership of the code always remained with Microsoft.

A little late replying to this but now I’ve spent some time with the update I’d like to register again how disappointing it is that the hard work that went into the update has been ruined by the continuing problems with the small tree LOD, which looks even worse in the Nordics than most other areas.

Asobo, when are you going to fix this?!

Yayyy, here is one “speculation” regarding the upcoming DirectX 12 update that is both logical and hopeful! It has been a bit frustrating to see all the vast array of supposed knowledgeable things said about this from the community, while I have not been able to find a definitive statement from the development team what we might expect to receive–other than the fact that DirectX 12 is coming along with the XBox release.

I would be interested to hear any further speculation from you regarding what DX 12 might bring to the Sim, such as opening more cores of i9 processors, visual enhancements, etc. My hopes are that MSFS will be greatly improved in both performance and graphics.

That last bit about spreading out on more processors may benefit those with more cores more than those with fewer cores since the cores already have things to do. Will be curious to see where that line is.

Should be interesting…

I’m not a game dev nor have I ever used DX in any version, so I’m not familiar enough with the API to really have a deeply informed opinion, nor do I have any insight on what Asobo are doing. I was speaking from the perspective as a lead programmer and project manager of a dev shop within a larger organization. My post is indeed speculation, but it’s based on how I’d manage a project being ported from one API to another like this. I actually have such a project in the works at the moment.

DX12 doesn’t magically unlock multithreading or more cores. DX11 can already do that and MSFS is already multi-threaded. From my basic understanding of it, it allows better / easier / more efficient thread management. But one thing doesn’t change - the workload is still managed by a single core / thread (main thread) and we’re still going to be limited by how fast that single core performance is. DX12 also allows for more types of and better quality visual effects at lower computing cost than DX11. In itself, DX12 does nothing to make things run better or faster.

That said, Asobo have said that they’ve managed to increase performance significantly while making the changes for the Xbox, and slower machines should benefit from these optimizations significantly. Whether those changes are directly due to leveraging functions of the DX12 API or just optimizing to make things fit on the limited Xbox resources, we can’t know for sure. I suspect it’s a combination of both.

One thing I’m sure that will help overall performance significantly is the moving of glass cockpit processing off the main thread and onto its own discreet thread. Right now, I’m seeing a 12-15 fps difference between the C152 and any plane that has any type of Garmin. For me, that’s a 50% difference, and that’s quite significant. Whether that change is enabled by DX12 or not, I don’t know. In any case, it will be welcome.

But like the rest of us mere mortals outside of the Microsobo loop, I only know what’s been said by the dev teams in Q&As and interviews and with the Xbox trailer videos released last week. I have no information except what the general public has access to.

Asobe said in a earlier statement, that the performance will not much better with DX12.
Probably a few fps will be gained on surtain PC configurations.

In September 2020, Asobo hinted that it was working on adding DirectX 12 support to Flight Simulator. At the same time, the developer warned to expect little performance gain from this; especially being able to add ray tracing would be a reason to make the game DX12 compatible.

I’m not sure what to think of my experiments.

When flying in a glass cockpit, my GPU actually gets quite hot (i7 CPU with 2060 RTX GPU). But sometimes it doesn’t. Turns out, if I take out the PFD, and place it in a standalone window (on the same screen, I only have one)… the percentage of the GPU drops from 90% to 60%. And it cools down.

So I tried landing around a busy city without this extra window, and that became almost impossible. The GPU is at 100%, I get these huge stutters and pauses. Then when I jank out the PFD, it’s not smooth, but I can land normally. Perhaps 15FPS, but at least those frames come in normally.

So I seem to have to tone down my GPU for a more pleasant flight (less heat and smoother landings). In that sense I fear DX12… what if that becomes impossible?

And to people complaining about not being able to land: I get you now. Try janking out some flight instruments (ALT-right + mouseclick on the instrument).

I also have a 2060 RTX and it’s 120Mhz overclocked, my CPU is a i5-9600K (overclocked).
My temp is max. 72 degr. outside the A32nx and 65 degr. inside the cockpit of the A32nx.

What is your max. temp?
Do you have turned down your glass cockpit refresh rate.
I have set my refresh rate at medium.
With my graphic settings on a 2560*1080 widerange monitor i get 25 to 30 fps while landing on a large airport.

Gaming laptop. It gets to 86. Then when it settles down a bit it goes to 72.

I don’t know if the design ever took these temperatures into account (and it probably wouldn’t harm to give the fans a vacuum). So I always fear the whole thing might collapse with those temps.

But what surprises me is that taking out one of these instruments, reduces the GPU load by 40% or so. One PFD having such a huge effect.

Overall I get the impression that MSFS needs to have the CPU and GPU somewhere on the same level. Else you get into trouble.

Yes, instrument refresh is on medium. Framerate capped at 30.

Perhaps you can use a extra laptop cooler, because laptops have not so much standard cooling performance. For 25 to 30 euro you have a good extended cooler.

I want to underclock my GPU

In fact I will experiment a bit further with an even lower framerate cap. I want to be able to land without having to cripple the GPU. I suspect the CPU is just too slow.

Laptops are not the best devices to run MSFS2020 on.
They have to much thermal problems and the performance of the CPU/GPU is less than the ones in a PC.
