DIY desk lamp from Cockpit A320 Reading Light

Filippo -

The outer housing comes off with a small blade screwdriver - pops off, look for a small indent to apply pressure to release the lens cap. The inner reflective surface comes out with some gentle tension with a small blade screwdriver aswell - what i am having difficulty is removing the ‘eyeball socket’ - you have an outer socket with an inner that rotates attached to the terminal block - no bolts, no screws, its almost like it is ultrasonically welded/sealed unit - if you manage to separate that - please tell me how!

Ok Update! see bottom of thread.

Update # 1

Separated front face plate from back mount plate.
Removing the Rheostat and back mount that holds the pinouts and coupling. (Need a Torq Set S/D)
Fitting of A320 lighting knob to dimmer module (220V) is done.
GU10 Bulb and Bulb Holder marriage is done.

What’s left:

Separation of eyeball socket lamp holder (hacksaw job as it is ultrasonically welded)
Wire 3A plug to 0.75mm 3-Core
Wire 0.75mm 3-Core to Dimmer Module
Wire 0.75mm 3-Core from Dimmer Module to GU10 Holder
Test

Provisions:

If test is OK -

Affix the dimmer module to back plate and attach rotary knob (test for fit and adjust using hexbolts)
Affix the eye ball socket to back plate (superglue and circlip)
Tidy Wiring
Prepare for mounting in box section.

Nice find!

After flying the A320 for almost 6 years, I have never used that light on the aircraft, so it’s probably in great condition!

you know, it is in mint condition!

Update # 2

Wired up and working! just need to bore out the eye-socket to seat a GU10, 35W only to keep the temps on the cooler side, ordered the wooden pine box which will be stained and distressed and some decals to finish the touches.

Grommets ready for the inlet power to be nicely secured and cleanly finished into the box body.

What’s done:

Separation of the terminal block from the eye-socket (hacksaw job)
Removal of original rheostat and replace with household 220V module
Affix and attach the original Airbus control knob and secure with hex bolts.
Wire plug 3A
Test for connection! - Works!

What’s left:

Bore 22mm hole into the eye-socket to accept a GU10 instead of a 11.5W Aircraft Bulb.
Tidy Wiring
Seat into box body
Seal faceplate with clear glue to box face
(Re-tidy wiring and drill 10mm hole to insert wire guide for input power (be tidy and neat at the back!)
Stain & Distress in Battleship Grey colour
Affix A320 Decals/Transfers/Artwork

Nice!
The best thing to do with it is to put it and any bits and paperwork into
a well padded box, seal it up and send it to me.
Please!
Please!

Seriously though.
Lovely piece of kit.
I would be tempted [on safety grounds alone] to rewire it to suit for your local mains
and replace the light with a modern LED equivalent.
Possibly a good idea to earth the thing as well.
Done sympathetically it would be the bees knees.

I too would love to see pictures of the finished article.

@anon81017491 I have rewired it with 0.75mm 2-core, earthing isn’t needed as it is essentially a desk lamp with a nonconductive faceplate (hardened plastic) and a wooden box  I have got an LED replacement, but i will need to swap out the dimmer rheostat to support it (might do that once i have everything done as a quick swap at the end

In terms of pictures - happily share the whole thing with the forum if anyone wants to copy or do it themselves!

35 Watts? Is this not an LED lamp?

Halogen 35W

but i do have a 5W LED GU10, just need to change the dimmer module for a LED compatible one…

I’m guess you can dim that LED down a lot. IIRC, a 5W LED can heat up to around 120 °C.

Hi there - I’m building an Airbus flight deck out of OEM equipment - I’ve posted some of the pinouts on my blog, including the pinouts of the overhead reading light - https://soarbywire.com/2016/11/10/reading-light-pinouts/

Cheers,

Ben
