You listed your running apps but not how much RAM each is using (other than Edge at about 1GB). It seems those apps are eating around 15GB, which seems more than excessive and I’d try to find ways to replace the worst offender(s) or try to find options for them to reduce RAM usage. If all fails, there are two 32GB sticks softly calling your name somewhere
Edge is easy and able to get it down under 1GB. The two main hogs are MSFS2020 and simtoolkitpro they eat the most RAM. OBS Is under 2GB and since I use MSFS via Steam, Steam is running also at 400MB to 500MB
Stream deck - 150MB
GoXLR - 98MB
antimalware service executable - 250MB
simtoolkitpro - as high as 2.1GB
Volanta - around 300 to 400MB
Discord - 250MB to 280MB
SImlink - Not even 10MB
IVAO/core - 50MB to 100MB
Stean - Max 500MB low as 300MB
MSFS2020 - 9GB to 12GB
and other whatnot that windows needed…
For FS2020, depends on your graphics settings.
MSI Afterburner just showed mine a 15.6 GB of VRAM usage.
Not talking about VRAM - Talking about RAM/memory
I just loaded KMIA in the PMDG 737 and it’s almost 18GB of My system RAM -
Now it’s back down to 9GB of my system RAM,
Making it 73% total used out of 32GB
Sorry, need another cup of coffee…
Amazing how nonchalantly various apps eat up RAM these days, isn’t it?
64GB, here you come!
No need, I mean I need that coffee too…
Image that 64GB won’t be enough in 10 years’ time, system needs 500GB RAM XD
I run DX12 exclusively, 64GB RAM.
I do use Addon Linker so only running the addons relevant to my Departure and Arrival airports.
Enroute to KLAS from CYYZ, MSFS is using 11GB.
FSRealistic 1GB
Air Manager 2GB
So seems that it’s normal to be using 8GB to 11GB in most cases for people on DX12
I know DX11 use less than what DX12 is…
Might have to consider more RAM this year so that I have more room to play around. 72% has been the highest so far at the moment till I get into heavy locations like KORD.
My concern more than anything reaching 100% and Blue screen Xd
It’s been mentioned a few times but perhaps I missed the response.
Do you keep everything in your community folder? or are you using tools like Addon Linker to limit the addons to ones that are applicable to your flight?
For fun after I land I should just enable all Addons and see what it does.
I do keep most in the community folder, Even that Orbx install outside of it. I removed the community folder loaded MSFS2020 and it still uses 8GB to 9GB of RAM with no addons installed as default as it can be. So
I would think about increasing your RAM to 32 GB.
2 hours into the flight and it’s at 8GB seen it jump to 8.6GB while cruising..
Does anyone ram increase or decrease when cruising??
I am running 32GB - I have considered 65GB but it’s going to cost me about £200 to replace the full package and I do not have the extra cash right now.. Then again 65GB but end up not being enough if the sim starts using even more
BSOD will happen when Windows runs out of resources like memory. There may be an issue with a program needing a bigger chunk of memory that Windows cannot find available.
What is your memory utilization after a boot with nothing but Windows running? 10%? 20% more?
Check again that Windows is managing paging for you. Sounds like it isn’t. It will only prevent the BSODs. You would still have a memory utilization problem. When paging is enabled, Windows starts offloading real memory to virtual memory at about 60% to 75% utilization. The PC starts slowing down because of the paging overhead. Over 80% utilization, the system is paging so much that everything is running so slow as to become unusable. MSFS might be as slow as 10 seconds for one or two frames!
I’ve never used SimToolkitPro so I have no idea about its impact. I suggest that both stream/twitch and SimToolkitPro be turned off. There may be other memory hogs like an open browser. Chrome often gobbles up memory.
Also, Windows shares memory with the GPU when certain processes need both RAM and VRAM.
For me, DX12 benefits are significant, worth any additional memory requirements. If my PC was having memory problems, I’d look at other things before going back to DX11.
Once booted and up and running it’s 16% to 20%
tCVb8km.png (450×614) (imgur.com) As the image shows, With 32GB I never had to go above the amount that I do have, it’s been the last week or so that I have seen the amount of RAM usage… Then again I have been on DX12 for three weeks. However, DX12 should help even though it does use more RAM
Three years and never stopped using it,
cruising at FL360 to KORD and MSFS2020 using 9GB as we speak,
Game will use your resources and DX12 will be more intensive using them. If I spawn over New York the game memory usage goes to 15 GB RAM and game GPU usage goes to 14 GB VRAM, resulting in a total RAM usage (complete system not only game) close to 27 GB.
Figures are for 64GB RAM system with 24GB 4090 GPU, TAA 125% (4800x2000), TLOD 200 and 200 AIs around.
Remember Windows and rest of background processes will easily take around 3 GB extra, so it´s not only game what uses your resources.
On the other hand if your GPU runs out of VRAM it will start to use RAM, unless you disable that feature. At Nvidia panel you can do it via the following setting:
by changing such default setting to “Prefer no system fallback”. However that can result in out of memory situations if your card becomes overloaded.
Cheers
I am on 3090 with 24GB and right now it’s 13GB being used of VRAM
100 on most on sliders and on High, not epic.. I only read what MSFS is using, not the other software and Windows Sooo.
Yes, that´s similar to my figures. As you see in my case I´m close to 27 GB RAM usage under DX12, so memory usage is high as well as on your case.
The problem in game is not the high memory usage (resources are meant to be used) but that pagefile allocation starts growing and it´s not released. Most of the crashes I have seen happen even on moderate memory usage around 50% but with a extreme pagefile allocation (close to 50GB in my case). This has no sense and shows that something is clearly wrong. This figure almost doubles one of the most demanding scenarios in terms of physical memory usage (the New York case) but can happen randomly even at less dense scenarios.
Cheers
Seems that going to 64GB won’t resolve it, just an easy way out of giving myself more headroom. Yet with someone with 16GB RAM using 2.5GB RAM flying over New Zealand in the B787 Xd
I left my end to manage anyway

what’s your end setup… Normal Default?
