Eye/Head tracking opinions?

Track IR Wouldnt fly without it …occasionally ive had it turned off when im just quickly testing something i look to my left and nothing happens so weird. Eye tracking is much more useful for GA especially when in the pattern and your flying down wind you keep glancing left to check your position then turning base to final. its also great for aerobatics or mock dog fighting in warbirds trying to keep track of others peoples positions without having to touch a keyboard or use a hat switch but helicopters are a god send where you are constantly looking in a 180 arc .
its entirely personal i agree but dont right it off as un natural, sitting in front of a computer staring at a screen and using preset views isnt exactly natural.
That being said i do find sometimes track ir’s range to lean down and read instruments not always great and still have to use preset views ( mainly on airliners) though thats also my eyes

If i look down with tir i get clear visual on instrument with no need of zoom in or out by leaning forward. But the multimonitor setup helps a lot

yeah I’m not that close in , but its mainly i cant read the instruments clearly on some displays it all depends what the aircraft is

I know what you mean. That’s why I set my head tracking to have a greater magnification of movement for moving forwards/backwards, than side to side, up/down, or rotation.

I can’t imagine anymore to fly without headtracking. (I use a webcam with AI Track and Opentrack).

VR is really cool and definitely gives the best immersion, but I personally find it clunky tiresome to use, so I rarely end up using it.

So head/eye tracking is a perfect solution for me, I got Tobii and it takes a bit of time to get used to, but now I couldn’t fly without it. Really makes everything so much smoother and feels more natural.

Hey - just installed smoothtrack and playing around with it. Could you share your Settings as I can’t seem to get sensitivity right?

Thanks

These are my mappings

Top man thanks much :ok_hand:

Been using TrackIR for 25 years it is second nature now, if it is not working I do not fly.

To be brutally honest most people I have come across that do NOT use some form of eye/head tracking or VR tend to get a sort of tunnel vision where they fly like they are always in IFR zero vis and focus almost entirely on the instruments and only look at the outside world in external view on autopilot…

Must say I am still very much debating if the Tobii 5 is really worth the money I spent.
I have three large curved monitors and it seems difficult to find a setting that works for this setup.
It can only be calibrated for one of the three obviously. The center one is most logical because that is where you look most.
But for the occasional glance left or right there is too much going on then, while it always moves around when trying to look at a single gauge or set a radio etc.
But…I have not used it for a long time yet and have also not had a lot of time to play with the different settings.

If you use the freeware AI track/Opentrack you can calibrate for all 3 monitors. This is the main reason why I went this direction as the other eye tracking solutions had limitations on the monitor size. AI track/Opentrack is amazingly good and nothing required to attach to your head - works even with eye glasses.

Ok… probably a silly question, but could I use that with the Tobii hardware ??

No - other than the 2 freeware SW programs you only need a web cam.

Sorry mate one other question. Is it possible to stop or pause the head tracking via a key mapping? For example I don’t want head tracking when in the cruise…

I have the Tobii 4C - does anyone know whether it’s good for MSFS?

I’ve been using TrackiR for the last 10 years. But I’m about to retire it and upgrade to Tobii which should be delivered this week. Couldn’t fly without some kind of head tracking.

Yes you can bind a key in the smooth track interface.

Unpopular opinion maybe but I personally don’t like the (paid) solutions. If a system can handle a proper VR headset I’d save the extra bugs for this instead of going Tobii.

For me such devices are overpriced if I keep in mind OpenTrack exists and also works. Also, just like OP, I feel moving my head while keeping the eyes on the flat screen feels really unnatural in general.
