Historical Airplanes

Probably this thread. I don’t have a website to post a list. I don’t want to duplicate the efforts somebody else if they have already done this. My druthers would be that this is a collaborative effort. I will create the starter list (as a spreadsheet) with the hope that others would notify me of missing entries. If somebody has a suggestion as to where to post this where other MSFS users would easily find it and have access to it, please let me know. I understand that I am exposing myself to those who love to say negative things about it, but it sounds from this discussion that some MSFS users would find it useful.

Yes! One of my favorite planes. My RC buddy built an RC version of it!

First flight being 1927 it would be in the “antique” class.

That’s a very interesting museum. Wish I knew about it during my 20 years in the US there would have been a long weekend trip planned for sure.
Are you familiar with the ‘kickstarter’ software development model?
With your background and access to the real aircraft for photographs and video I am sure it would be possible to gain backers to fund your beloved Champ?
First you’d need find a small developer who already makes addons you admire which have the level of detail you would be satisfied with.
Once you’ve established their integrity and honesty you would simply (it’s always simple in advance isn’t it?!) ask them what funding they would need to develop what you want. You could tender the same idea out to several devs but that route is normally reserved for bigger projects.
This may well be wayyyy more work than you envisioned but… I for one like your grading of aircraft eras and I’m sure others would to. What’s that expression? "If you build it they will come "?
You can add 100 bucks from me to yours if you find someone suitable to do it!
Good luck regardless.

Are you talking about kickstarter.com? I only found one for Microsoft Flight Simulator there, and it was unsuccessful. If I understand it, your suggestion is as follows.

  1. Find a developer who does good work.
  2. Ask them if they would take on the Champ, and at what cost.
  3. Repeat 1 and 2 as needed.
  4. Post a project on Kickstarter to pay for the development.
  5. If enough funds are pledged, pay the developer.
  6. Provide the developer with images as needed.
  7. Wait for product development.

This sounds like a time consuming process. I’m not sure I am up to it at the age of 82, but I’ll mull it over.

I found two people who said they could take this LIC Champ in the “public domain” by the originator, and convert it to MSFS, but it turned out neither had the time to follow through (one got the model shell working but didn’t have time to make it fly). I tried to convert the CR-1 Champ to MSFS myself, following a bunch of “how to” videos on YouTube, but was unsuccessful. Of course neither of these models is up to MSFS standards.

I think for now I’ll just email Golden Age Simulators and ask them to add a Champ to their list of projects. =( email sent )=

Thanks everybody for your thoughts and suggestions.

P.S. There are others wishing for an MSFS “native” Aeronca Champ.

Email received. This is a great little plane but not one I see us doing any time soon. Most projects can take up to 6 months to complete and there is the Super Stearman in development with no expected release date. I know that you had contacted a member of our team and he did look at it as an interesting project but that would for him to decide how and what to do.

Try to contact Classic Aircraft Simulations.
If they make a Champ as good as their Cub, it will be a N°1 plane.
And perhaps they could also make a SuperCub, who knows ?

Hi
Well I was thinking more informally than official route for a smaller addon.
Another idea… Same vein. Flightsim.to has plenty of freeware addons and many are great. You could find a contributor there you like the work of (download first it’s all free!) and then just make a request?
As you are an invaluable source of information and media from the real planes let alone with stick experience you might get interest from a few people there. I’d start with planes you have experience and media of, look for those, and offer that input for a plane of your choice.
You may be surprised how good many free addons are available. Especially vintage /rare.
Good luck!

Done. Waiting for a response.

P.S. I purchased their J3 Cub. It is an excellent model in every way! Love it! If CAS develops a Champ it will be a winner!

Some interesting classic planes on display here.

I have been in discussion with Classic Aircraft Simulations, the creator of the fabulous J3 Cub. His plans are for a larger more complicated aircraft for his next project. He lives in the UK and is not familiar with the Champ.

Ledeni000 aka FlyboySims, made the excellent Rans S6S, might be one to reach out to.

You’ve got me really wanting a Champ in the sim, and a Decathlon, and a Citabirca…

I’ll tell you what, that STA is really something else. I got it and sure it’s pretty and it’s visceral, and it sounds fantastic, and flew it around for a while. I went back again and spent more time with it again getting out of go-fast mode and appreciating at it’s level where 120kt was a big deal. The nuances of the flight model and takeoff/landings, especially on grass, and mild aerobatics are fantastic when you give it more respect and more fingertips than fist. Definitely need to get into the STA’s mode, which can be hard a times flip flopping around from VLJ’s to Monster NX’s with nitrous all the time.

If you would like to participate in a poll for the creation of an Aeronca Champ for MSFS you may do so here:
