In need for help selecting a PC

Just curious what was negative about the I9-14?

I have:

i9-14900KF
4080 Super
32gb RAM

Very happy except I need more ram.

Been about 6 months since I built mine, I also run VMWare and there were some issues with that. The comments were from NewEgg and Intel’s WEB sites. Will be getting more RAM too.

Hi Nikita,
Nice to hear from you.
I have 3 current Mac computers—one maxed out Studio, Mac Pro tower and an M laptop— that I use for various purposes, my last Windows machine is a roughly 10 year old Falcon custom build that would not be acceptable for gaming. However, I am not interested in building a computer and am looking at the MSI Vision Elite RS 14th, or another Falcon build. They are both rather costly, the MSI slightly less so, but going high-end seems to be the best solution to avoid buyers remorse. While the Xbox sort of works with flight sim 2020, it isn’t perfect, and programming settings is a nuisance with the Xbox controller. Additionally, I use the Honeycomb Alpha Yoke , Bravo throttle and Charlie pedals, and none of the Honeycomb or third party downloads can be used with Xbox. So that leaves me with the PC option.

All that said, I believe that both MSI and Falcon are using the Intel Core i9-14900KF chips that had been having voltage damage issues, and while Intel claims to have fixed the problem, in my mind there is still a level of concern.

Add: Just checked, and the Falcon offers the Intel Ultra which apparently has not suffered from the voltage issues.
Best regards,
Ron

This is an addendum to my prior post.
After much research, I have decided to order a custom Falcon computer build, with an AMD Ryzen 9800 X3D processor and Nvidia RTX 4090, 96 MB ram, and two 4TB SSD’s, etc. The RTX 5090 was not available for the build, while the 5080 was. Benchmark scores seemed to indicate that the 4090 was a better choice for gaming, but time will tell.

Why 96GB RAM? I can see it if you are running several VM’s, or plan to use a 32GB RAMdrive. I used to run a RAMdrive, but tests are showing that 256GB seems to be the optimal size for the Rolling Cache - which means it goes on a storage drive, not RAM.

Also, 48GB DIMM’s (2x48GB) are quite a bit slower (and pretty expensive) and two DIMM’s is better than four DIMM’s in an AMD platform.

In short, if you aren’t planning on running virtual machines, I’d recommend 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5-6000/CL30 (or 6400/CL32.)

Hello, and thank you for your reply.
The 96GB ram is on two 48GB DDR5 dims, and I’d added the extra ram since I might use the computer for functions other than gaming, where the extra ram could be helpful. Anyway, the build order has already been placed.

It might be a good idea to start your own thread. Although the topic may seem similar, there’s a significant difference in approach: OP is looking to build a PC from parts, while you’re interested in purchasing a pre-assembled PC. These are two very different scenarios, requiring distinct recommendations.

Additionally, factors like hardware preferences and budget can vary greatly from person to person. By creating your own topic, you’ll get tailored advice specific to your needs.

Sacrilege!!!
(I’m joking, of course…)

Sounds like a great build.

My recollection is that nVidia said, “The 5070 will have the same performance as the 4090, at a much lower cost.”

Which was a carefully fabricated marketing deception at best, and an outright lie at worst.

The 5080 will compare quite favorably with the 4090 - except for its pathetic 16GB VRAM.

As far as I know the RTX5080 is also not available yet? Benchmarks with other cards seem to be reported as fake?

Thank you.

The problem with 2024 is it don’t matter how good of a PC you have, the quality is going to matter on how well the servers are serving you. You can run it at 4K ultra settings and it don’t matter cuz Ms servers will serve you less quality than your PC is capable of. I can run both 2024 and 2020 on 4K ultra. For the moment I given up on 2024. With 2020 at least you know you’re going to get ultra quality.

… and the quality of your internet connection to those servers :zap: :fire: :zap:

That matters but you can have a 1gb download connection like I have and the servers can still feed you ■■■■. I see a lot of complaints from people with connections like this getting blurred scenery. On 2020 it’s on your hard drive.

I think blurred scenery is more related to LOD being throttled for reasons not related to server capacity or individual internet speed. It’s a lowest common denominator type of thing. The CDN doesn’t see that I have a 1Gb fiber connection and a powerful computer, and someone else has an Xbox S. So we both get the same datastream that the latter platform can handle.

Flame suit on.

This should not be the case, let us hope not. On the client end, the Xbox and PC versions are different executables, with each optimized for the platform the sim is running on. Xbox version is optimized for output to TV and PC version is optimized for output to monitors. Console has automation driving output parameters and PC leaves those choices to the user with settings. There would be no point to streaming the same data set to both platforms. But we are in fact becoming inured to pointless processes around here so this is the conversation we are having!

As I was saying in my comment is that even if you have a high end PC (meaning no throttle issues)…

My friend, so you recently made the switch from Xbox to PC. Do you now feel like you are back on Xbox playing 24 on your PC? Is it really that bad? Should I not make the move to PC this year LOL!?

Lol, much much better on a PC. There’s no helping 2024, a high end PC won’t fix it. They’ve got to fix it. I’m spending 90 percent of my time on 2020 these days. It’s still awesome.

I should have been a bit more clear. I think that objects like tress, buildings, etc. are the same for both platforms. In order to reduce the streaming data size they’ve throttled LOD. This is pure speculation on my part. I do believe those objects looked fantastic when flying at 3,000 ft. when the sim launched, and took a very noticable quality hit after the 2nd patch. Again, purely anecdotal observation and deduction on my part.
