I see this brought up a lot, but as @omarsmak mentioned before, we’re talking about a much different company compared to the Microsoft at that time.
The whole executive slate has changed, from Satya Nadella to Phil Spencer, they’re playing a very different tune compared to Steve Ballmer, Bill Gates, or Don Mattrick. The core corporate philosophy at Microsoft is pretty much the opposite compared to what it was then (and thankfully so).
I don’t think there’s any solid risk for the sim to “fall out of grace,” unless the executive team changes. This team has shown that it doesn’t abandon games easily, as we can see from cases like Sea of Thieves.
I really don’t think the old suits from the FSX/MS Flight era would have greenlit this project at all. Hell, I didn’t expect even this team to bring MSFS back, but here we are.
The intention if they follow the X-Plane process is to provide the community with a set of tools to update default airports in the sim using default assets. Asobo would review the community contribution and select one if it in their eyes exceeds the quality of the current default airport. This community airport then is made available for the next patch release.
A few things to consider.
Default assets must be used not custom ones to maintain performance, patch sizes.
Assets diversity and customisation considerations are tool dependant.
Asobo or another team need to be involved to select airports for inclusion.
Should be included in core sim patches like navigational data - there shouldn’t be any marketplace involvement - if you have to download the selected contribution from the marketplace then what is the point?
Just my thoughts and musings. I haven’t contributed to X-Plane scenery gatway myself, has anybody here got experience with this?
I did EICA Connemara, for example. To be accepted by Laminar research it had to be made with only their default assets. Once approved, it was then incorporated into the default sim download at the next update.
However they also provide a dedicated web link to their gateway site so you can search and download just this 1 item separately if you want.
It’s a good system and very popular and some people (MisterX for example) have produced payware quality scenery.
There are a lot of MSFS users that the sim works perfectly for.
I am one of them.
Yes, there are some issues with the planes right now, but since I use the A320mod, it isn’t an issue to me.
I’m not trying to keep the mood high, just saying like it is.
Other than that, I have only had one problem, and that was solved through this forum.
There does seem to be a trend that the North American folks seem to have much better luck overall with the sim than does the Europe and Asia areas.
And if we apply the commutative property of mathematics to your statement, then that same man’s quality product will be achieved if patience is applied.
I do certainly understand.
I see folks with these issues here all the time.
I would be totally irate if the sim wouldn’t work
But that’s just it.
I have no serious FPS drop anywhere, but my flights are shorter, 2hour max.
I have seen the terrain spikes in the scenery which have been around for a few months, some of which were fixed, but other than that, no transparent stripes.
I have no idea what stair effect is, my water looks like it should. (nowhere near the PR photos though)
Weather, probably 70-80% of the time I have reasonably accurate weather.
All buttons that ASOBO made to work, work for me, unlike some who can’t get some switches such as starters etc to work.
Clouds for me were improved significantly a couple updates ago. You need to really look at them now to notice just a little bit around the edges.
The only ILS issue I have had is missing frequencies, and the A/P not following the entry to a STAR.
It does make one wonder why for some of us, the sim works fine, and others it just doesn’t.
Personally, my only complaint is that I do feel we were misled as to the state of development of the sim when it was released.
I probably would have bought though, even had I known!
A reminder that this is about an interview, not just another thread where to unload the full list of all the complaints you have about the sim. There are plenty of threads for that. Thanks.
You should send Jorg an email and let him know you have experience with it. He reached out to me and asked if I had experience because I contacted him to mention it early on. If interested, I’ll DM you the email.
If you open the page I’ve linked above, you’ll see it is not just a database of airports to download, but also tools and an API. It is a complete ecosystem supporting customers shared participation in enhancing the simulator airports.
In essence, it is not dissimilar to what Microsoft/Asobo has done to prepare all the 40000+ airports included, except instead of paying people doing this all day with no knowledge of aviation and only tasked to cleanup ground textures and align polygons over it, it is free and handled by aviation enthusiasts knowing the importance of correct ground markings and building types in an airport.
One doesn’t exclude the other, the former was necessary to get started, but the later is mandatory to sustain the game in the long run, in my opinion.
I believe the same applies to the rest: beautiful add-ons filling the market place which is central to the whole FS2020 market strategy, but past initial launch, it most likely will require some more care and love to long time 3rd party developers doing this for decades in order to address some of the simmers needs.
Yep I am all for leaving something on the table for the 3rd party dev community as they have supported us so well especially since the killing off of FSX.
Take for example the folks at flyinside for showing us how good VR could be ( VIA an addon!) then Orbx and how good they made the world .
However there are still too many basic functions not working as they should or limited and a lack of physics for anything other the GA. Yes I know there are airliners but they are pretty ordinary and no 3rd party dev has stepped in yet ( is there a problem with the SDK?).
I wish Jorg would just concentrate on the base sim for a while please!
Flight physics and systems functionality are key and critical. The world Asobo has built for us to fly in already exceeds most people’s expectations. It is truly beautiful and quite remarkable.
The a32NX by FlyByWire is anything but ordinary, and Aerosoft is releasing the CRJ within two weeks, which is way more advanced than anything other sims had 6 months from release.
Jorg isn’t making the simulator himself. The simulator is being made by hundreds of people from various disciplines of software development divided into teams that work on many different things at the same time. That’s how game development works. So no. They won’t just focus “on the base sim” because the many developers whose skills don’t apply to the “basic” aspects of the sim won’t just go on vacation or be fired.
