Is it time to buy a 7800X3D?

Matches in fps at 4K sure it’s gpu bound. But 5800X to 5800X3D would help you, X3D would have more headroom for heavy scenarios, the 3D vcache is a thing.

However, you sound happy enough so I’ll just leave it at that. It’s still an expense and 5800X3D’s are still not as cheap as they could be, especially with 9-series coming up.

Yeah, better wait a little bit. I mean, we don’t even know for sure what engine changes MSFS 2024 will have. You can hold the upgrade until MSFS 2024, the new cpus and new gpus are out. Worst case scenario (the new PC parts are not that interesting) you will be able to buy the current gen hardware for less, because there will be the new generation available.

Sure but that’s offset by my 5.1GHz boost speed compared to the X3D’s 4.34, even with LOD 400 and traffic @ default there are no real heavy scenarios.

(that reminds me I’m currently only boosting to 4.9 … I think it’s time for a cleanout and a repaste)

I agree (to an extent.)

I’ve certainly wished for higher core frequency from my 5800X3D. Also, the ability to undervolt it.

I’ll just reiterate that I’ve had both, and saw a 10-15% performance increase with X3D.

It’s all good. We’re both in the same boat here. Our paddles are just a bit different is all.

I think for most of us, it’s not whether or not we’ll make a move up to a newer socket.
It’s WHEN are we going to upgrade.

At this moment, we reached a point where 7800X3D price is lower than 5800X3D on AMZN, and 7900X3D dropped even lower than 7800X3D at one point.
Can’t say whether prices have bottomed, but it feels like it won’t get much better than that for those CPUs. On Newegg, a 6 years old 9900K is about the same price as those 3D chips.

When the X870 boards are available in stores is a good time to think about pulling the trigger.
The first MSFS2024 performance numbers will sure be useful, but we all want better, so there’s that.
Also, Jorg said the official system requirements for 2024 will stay the same and he expects performance to be similar or better for existing systems.

I’m expecting a performance uplift on 2024 on my current 5800X3D, so I’m still holding off until probably next year to do an AM4 → AM5 upgrade. Wanna see those 9xxx chips shake out first too.

9xxx should be really interesting.

As a side note – you crashed an A-6 Intruder into my house a few hours ago.
It’s ok though, I now realize we HAVE an A-6 in the sim and that makes me happy, even though you did give me a rude awakening I must say.

I think the 7800X3D isn’t actually at the bottom price, it didn’t even have a substatial cut in price so far. The 5800X3D is the one actually overpriced compared to its performance. The thing is, there’s a huge AM4 installed base, and those are more leaned towards staying in the platform than upgrading everything (CPU, RAM and Motherboard).

I wouldn’t get the 7900X3D or the 7950X3D. They have some issues because they have two CCDs and apparently there’s an aditional delay compared to the 7800X3D whic has a single CCD. The reason I say that is last year I waited until they released the 7800X3D to make a decision, and after assessing all the reviews and tests (MSFS included), I decided to go the 7800X3D. Having in mind you are using you PC for gaming/simulation. For productivity, don’t buy a 3D cache version.

But right now, just wait. New processors are coming and MSFS 2024 is ~4 months away.

Wasn’t me, I don’t enable multiplayer and don’t have an A-6 Intruder.

Another piece of information: at Computex, the new AM5 boards, called x870, were announced for August, and the new 3D chips for next January.
Now I am reading rumors both will be unveiled in late September, early October. If confirmed, that would mean about the same time as Arrow Lake, for those who would like to see what Intel is up to before making the plunge.
By then, we will be close to MSFS 2024 RTM.

Goodness me! I’m sorry. All this time I thought you were AvAngel.

No relation.

As far as I know, the 9000X3D aren’t announced yet. This january release is just a rumor. But I don’t doubt they will release them soon. They are already stating the 7800X3D will still be the best cpu for games, so they need to release the new “gaming cpus” ASAP.

AMD: our Ryzen 7 7800X3D will be a faster gaming CPU than Zen 5-based Ryzen 9 9700X (tweaktown.com)

I got a good chuckle out of that.

The release date was not officially announced, but AMD reps did speak about the upcoming 3D chips with the press at Computex. They insisted it will not be an updated iteration of the same, that there will be significant changes in the new products. I posted a link to an article on that subject in early June.
The press has speculated that it may mean 3D Cache on both CCDs on the higher end products, as well as the introduction of a six core 3D Chip on the lower end, but we don’t know that for sure.
As to the initial January date, it was the press stating that the expected launch was CES 2025, most likely based on their "on deep background” interviews with AMD reps.
I agree that a September/October timeframe launch for 9xxx3D makes sense, it would coincide with Arrow Lake.

edit: PC Gamer article quoting an marketing manager by name, it directly attributes the 3D Cache improvements to them, and speaks about a CES 2025 date without citing a direct source.

Yeah, I’ve seen those, the first part got me excited (3D cache for both CCDs, lower latencies etc), but the second part, the January release, that still feels like rumor. Not saying won’t happen, but it didn’t seem to be coming from any AMD representatives.

Coming back to this one, ill be honest, my upgrade has been a joke and half to be honest and i wish i didn’t bother. I re-installed windows onto a new gen4 drive to go with my am5 build and after downloading everything again, it had stuck part of the windows installer back on my old drive because i left it connected.

It annoyed me so i started again, re-installed fresh again, finally been testing the sim out, now i am getting system lock up (mouse still moves). I am suspecting its this new m.2 but since i changed CPU, mobo and RAM, could be anything. I have now AGAIN re-installed windows back onto my old m.2 and i will re-test over the rest of the week. What a BIG PITA!!!

To top it all off, just finished installing FS again for like the 3rd time in the last week and when i closed it down after the content download had finished, i got black squares all over my screen!!!

They have gone for now, could be GPU (though this issue is not related to the above freezing issue i don’t think). I have rolled back drivers to 555.99 as i was on that at the start without issue so maybe it was a glitch with the latest driver. Will find out in the next couple of days. Save yourself some hair and just stick to what you have mate, if it aint broken DON’T TOUCH IT!

Looks like I missed the exit and got funnelled into a toll booth. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

7800X3D was $339 when I created this thread.

Ooof. Yeah I will be 100% waiting until 24 releases and the 9800X3D is tested along side these before making any decisions.

At Microcenter right now:

Add to that a 25$ CPU Coupon available through some youtubers, and it becomes 315 dollars.
Not bad.
