Yeah - it does feel like turning MSFS HDR on is like turning on a white mask. For me, the menus are very difficult to read - almost no contrast between the text and the blue or gray background colors (gray is the worst background). Look at the post with pics of the hanger (TBM 930) - post 9 of this thread - the Change Aircraft and Liveries menu items on the bottom of the screen almost disappear into the gray background.
I donât recall if I changed any settings on the monitor - I just leave it in HDR mode all the time. My experimentation was around windows HDR mode and MSFS HDR modes.
I leave HDR mode on for Windows almost all the time, as I play CS:GO a lot, and even though it doesnât support HDR, the game looks better with Windows HDR mode enabled.
I should also add that my Dell monitor supports HDR400 - which I am guessing is the same as the VESA 400 you described in your screen shots captions. I think this is a lower level of HDR capability - I have seen some online call it âfakeâ HDR. I think the number goes as high as HDR1000 (or more) - with higher numbers meaning better support.
EDIT:
My monitorâs HDR modes are listed under âSmart HDRâ, and the available modes are:
Any update on this, maybe even something from the developers that they are aware of this?
I just got an LG CX 48 OLED attached to an RTX 3090 (via HDMI 2.1 cable).
All thatâs happening after turning the âHDR10â setting on in Flight Simulator is the ugly flat white filter mentioned above.
I tried all the possible Settings combinations in nVidia Control Panel (YcBcR 444, 420, RGBâŠ), does nothing.
Seeing that quite a few reviewers mentioned Flight Simulator looked brilliant with exactly that TV in HDR, I am quite disappointed.
I had the same issue. C̶r̶u̶s̶h̶e̶d̶ Lifted blacks on HDR.
On my monitor SAMSUNG CHG70 (VA panel), when running HDR content, I have to 1) adjust setting called âblack equalizerâ almost to its highest value, basically increasing contrast in blacks and 2) raise brightness and 3) decrease sharpness, but the last one is Samsung specific. HDR looks great now. This has been recommended by RTINGS in their calibration settings, implying that the default monitor profiles are set for SDR mode only and HDR has to be customized by the user.
EDIT:
In Windows, the HDR has to be turned ON (otherwise MSFS will not run in HDR).
My NVIDIA (3080) settings: 10bpc color depth/RGB/Full Dynamic Range
On TV, when running HDR content from PC, I would start with an increase of contrast. Then Iâd test it by running Youtube HDR content from Windows. Be sure to check the TV is showing HDR mode.
I had an OLED with MSFS- during an update some months ago the HDR function in the sim greys out the colors. It used to look really nice. The picture looks best with HDR on in Windows, HDR off in the sim.
Are you sure that it is still running in HDR? The display might show HDR mode but the content might be in SDR actually. At least thatâs how it behaves on my system.
It can be checked visually, the sun is very bright and almost painful to look into on HDR (depends on the amount of nits ofc)
EDIT:
Or you can test it by making a ingame screenshot (Win+PrtScrn). SDR picture will look fine, while screenshot taken in HDR mode will look completely overexposed (thats not how does it look in the game, its just that the screenshot is not capable of HDR):
Before you made the adjustments to your TV, did the image look like what I showed in my original post of this thread? I canât find any way to adjust the âgray overlayâ appearance out - not even close.
What doesnât make sense to me is that using the Windows screen grabbing tool is capturing the effect too. My first post shows images where i photographed the screen with my phone camera. There is a follow-up post later (#8 or 9) that show the effect when I did a screen capture.
It doesnât seem like adjusting settings on my monitor would help if the screen grab image is flawed too? Or am I missing something here?
Iâve just tried decreasing contrast in nvidia control panel settings from default 50 to 40 and got exactly the same washed out look, youâve posted above. Try the opposite and increase to 60 or even more perhaps.
If this is the correct settings location, I just tried it. It makes a very slight difference if I crank contrast up to 100%, but doesnât do much. I have the dell monitor set to use HDR in windows, and I have FS set for HDR10. It looks MUCH better if I leave the âUse HDRâ setting on in windows, but turn off HDR10 in FS.
Yes, this is it.
If you turn HDR in Windows on , but turn it off in MSFS, do you notice any difference compared to SDR (i.e. Windows HDR off, MSFS HDR off)?
I have the same issue you have described in the first post, but only if the game starts with in-game option HDR10 set to OFF. Then if I try to set it to ON, everything becomes washed out, but the game window does not switch to HDR - itâs still controlled by Windows SDR brighthness slider, Riva Tuner overlay looks exactly the same, etc.
But if I leave the HDR10 option ON and restart the game, then HDR starts working correctly. After that, I can also toggle it in game options and it is switching correctly between SDR and HDRâŠ
Something seems to be broken with HDR activation for the first time, it works only on game startup.
