For using the shared cockpit tool, you have to disable multiplayer (or be on different servers). What you do is load up the same aircraft and the same position and the tool syncs them up (this is why you cannot have multiplayer on, there would be two planes ontop of each other). So you are not dependant on the sims multiplayer functionality.
