What is the general opinion on the YS-11? I have read thru the thread and seems mixed / average and not exceptional (for the price range) as always for these local legends aircraft that we get.
I don’t regret buying the YS-11 for the price, it’s definitely decent and a lot of fun.
Here are a few downsides, sorted from less important to more important:
There’s no cockpit door (zero privacy
).
Only very few liveries are included by default (I think 4), and unfortunately not many people on flightsim.to seem interested in creating more.
If you want to use GSX for pushback, you have to keep the GPU connected until after pushback and keep the engines completely off, otherwise GSX refuses to start the pushback. GSX even has a special setting that allows using one engine as an APU, which works fine with other turboprops like the ATR, but it doesn’t work with the YS-11.
If you leave the sim units setting on “Hybrid” (allowing both kg and lbs), the YS-11 only burns about half the fuel because the lbs to kg conversion apparently isn’t taken into account.
You really, really have to watch the stall speed, especially on final approach. It’s around 130 knots with full flaps, which feels very high for a turboprop of this size. Maybe that’s realistic for the real YS-11, but the transition is extremely aggressive: one moment it’s rock solid at 140 knots, the next it suddenly drops out of the sky with almost no warning.
If you can live with those shortcomings, you’ll get a very nice interior and exterior model, good sound, and a lot of fun for the money. ![]()
Lots of area for improvement including a glaring LOD error with the main passenger door open. Sadly inibuilds has said they won’t provide updates or fixes without more money from MS/Asobo.
Not sure where you have looked but you can find what I consider a healthy amount of liveries on flightsim.to for this kind of aircraft
Of course I found those liveries, but as of today most of them were added months ago already, and the majority are Japanese liveries from JAviation, who originally created the package for iniBuilds. That’s not exactly what I’d call a “living community.”
But of course I understand that it’s a pretty exotic aircraft and that there aren’t many real-world operators from the US or Europe to use as inspiration.
53 results for a rather exotic aircraft is pretty good. It wasn’t really used much in Europe at all AFAIK, so if that is what you’re after you probably should pick a different aircraft I guess.
I don’t have the plane. You stated you’re using hybrid units. Are you sure that’s not in km/h? According to Google, the Vso at max weight is 76 knots, which works out to 140 km/h…
Unfortunately, for whatever reason, Asobo has never been very good at units conversion.

Seems pretty funny to me that a company can deliver an unfinished product and then claim to need more money to finish it… But maybe it’s more complex than that…
You’re right, that would be the most obvious explanation, especially since in the “Hybrid” setting the fuel flow also gets cut in half (lbs vs kg).
What speaks against a wrong kts to km/h conversion though is that the cruise speed is very plausible at around ~250 kts @ 15,000 ft, and the corresponding GS on the GNS530 confirms that. (If the conversion was wrong, that would only be 250 km/h cruise, so roughly ~135 kts, which definitely isn’t the case.)
Another hypothesis: since the lbs vs kg conversion for fuel flow is clearly wrong, maybe in Hybrid mode the payload is also being simulated at roughly double the value you actually set in the EFB, which would explain why the stall speed is so high.
I’ll just try it again over the weekend with and without the Hybrid setting enabled and see if that changes the speed behavior as well.
