Long haul performance degradation back with SU12?

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?

YES!

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

It all started with SU12. Since SU10 and 11 I have been happily using DX12 as it seemed to give better performance (fps) and smoother panning.
After SU12 I immediately started experiencing very low FPS with DX12. Switching to DX11 seemed to have helped that issue.

Now, however, since 3 or 4 weeks, I have been experience a drop in performance about 1.5 hours into a flight.
It would start at its normal 50fps (capped at 50% with vsync enabled), and as I type this, 1.6 hrs into a flight, it’s now at 24fps with “Limited by Main Thread”.
This is unusual and has never happened before.

Things I’ve tried thus far:

  1. go to MS store and check for any updates, especially that microsoft game service app thing
  2. check for video drivers. if no newer ones, do a clean install of current ones (uninstall, reboot, reinstall)
  3. clear shader cache in gpu settings app
  4. clear dx cache with disk cleanup
  5. make the page file larger. i’ll be trying 32000MB for now.
  6. i enabled “data link feature exchange” in BIOS.
  7. delete and re create the rolling cache
  8. disabled rolling cache

Still the issue persists.
My only other two options at this point are 1) uninstalling MSFS and reinstalling, and 2) reinstalling the OS. The later of which I, of course, would not want to do and doubt will solve anything.

Dev mode was activated to see whats happening with the fps due to the sim becoming choppy.

PC Specs are:
Ryzen 5800X3D
Radeon 6900 XT
128 GB RAM

It’s completely ruining the experience… please advice!

Apparently some have reported that an application called “QuickCPU” has a feature called “clean memory” that can help when this happens.

I havent tried it yet, but will keep it running in the tray and do a “clean memory” if I get degradation to see if it will help.

Hey guys

I noticed something… I disabled vsync within the Sim, and set FPS limit to 50fps within Radeon Software (50% my display refresh rate), so that the driver deals with limiting the frame rate rather than the Sim.

image

Biggest difference currently I noticed is that the Sim FPS counter now always shows “GPU limited”, which I guess makes sense since it’s the GPU driver thats limiting the frame rate, but immediately I noticed how much more smoother the panning (looking around) is.

I havent done a flight yet, but will probably later using these settings.

I would recommend you guys with this issue try to limit fps directly from your nvidia or radeon driver, and see what happens.

*Update

So yea… Update to the above… That was a bust. It may have helped a little but not much, if any. Not sure…

A reply from MSFS zendesk suggested to put Airport Life and Land and Sea Traffic sliders to zero.

It did give a slight boost to fps. Not sure why this has any effect at 38000 feet…

Good news is that I landed stutter free.

Hello,

I have the same problem. turning on and off bing data graphics solves temporarily and fps goes to normal. But problem will still exists, it just resets somethings. Asobo should do something for this bug, this is very annoying.

Same issue, and same specs as OP. Everything is buttery 60fps, but after a few hours, fps drops randomly to low 20’s with very high mainthread stress.

Below examples are from two separate flights, EDDF - ETCN (1) and return trip (2, 3). This flight is around 3 hours, so not exactly long haul, but still related.

Hey. Please also make sure to submit a ticket to Asobo Zendesk: https://flightsimulator.zendesk.com/

@larzma94 you as well!

MSFS also replied to me as I asked them why putting the Airport Life and Environment sliders to zero would have an effect while at 37000 feet in cruise.

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Flight Simulator Support today.

There are so many variables that can affect this that it is impossible for us to give a definitive answer.

Even when you are flying at, 37000ft, the Sim will still draw ground traffic. This has an effect on your memory usage and during a longer flight, your memory gets used more and more. When these sliders are set to zero, the memory usage is not so demanding and this can help with the issue.

You can also try the following steps to mitigate the issue more:

  • Try different GPU driver
  • In some cases (mostly with Nvidia GPU’s), latest drivers can cause different issues. For AMD, we are not able to advise which driver version is the “best”, but if you have the latest driver, go back to the previous version to see if it makes any difference.
  • Increase virtual memory
  • How to Increase Virtual Memory in Windows 10: A Quick Guide

We are investigating performance issues and have brought fixes in previous updates to mitigate these. If you have any mods installed, and you are seeing the issue, it is impossible for us to know if this issue is because of the mods or because of something going on with the core Sim.

You can also try the following to see if it helps:

  • Delete and turn OFF rolling cache
    1. Launch Microsoft Flight Simulator
    2. Go to Options > General
    3. Go to Data
    4. Scroll to the bottom and go to Delete Rolling Cache File. Click on Delete
    5. Confirm your choice by selecting OK
    6. Turn rolling cache “OFF”
  • Go to Options > General Options > Traffic
    • Turn all “Airport Life” and “Land and Sea Traffic” sliders to 0

Of course removing any and all mods to see if the issue persists is a good idea, but a daunting task… and, if everything has been fine and the issue suddenly started creeping up (in between updates), what are the chances it actually has something to do with an add-on and not an issue with the core sim?

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?

Yes, I have the same problem.

Please the this post: After SU10, FPS still drops during flights - #333 by Player466072155

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

Not sure if this is the same problem or a slightly different one with similar consequenzes.
On the first flight of a day I get decent frame rates, depending on aircraft and area within what I expect from my middle of the road system.
My flights in general are about 1-1.5h from parking to parking.
Since the last update if I attempt a second flight I get FPS stutters of the worst kind. Basically unflyable …so I have to shut down and then restart the sim.

If it makes any difference after each flight I always go back to the main menue because otherwise the logbook doesn’t work.

Seems that this topic has been “bug-logged”, so yay. We’re officially not crazy.

Glad to see this too! It was difficult trying to get folks to see this since it still seems like the vast majority of folks don’t do long hauls.

Just finished a flight from Tromso to Bergen and at about an hour into the flight at cruise the fps just tanked and never recovered. Was well over 60 when leaving Tromso and landed in the 20s in Bergen and then alas I reload the flight in Bergen and they are back in the 60s again. There is a real problem with this happens almost every flight. Needs a fix ASAP as its not fun trying to land looking at a PowerPoint Presentation. 5800x3d and 3090 so specs not top tier but they are up there. Also find it happens in both DX12 and 11, I’m on 11 atm as 12 has stability issues plus that horrible airport ground texture bug so been on 11 even though 12 is smoother for my system.

Be sure to submit a support ticket to Asobo.

I see the exact same thing, (besides the sim not even starting under DX11 anymore)
starting with 40-50fps and ending up even after around 1-1.5hour flights (no matter if GA or Airliner) it tends to lock up at this magical 16-19fps?

approach with a lovely 11fps, setting everything to “LOW” won’t change a thing.

I also am experiencing performance degradation (and also the game quitting entirely) - while I am currently unsure if it is the mods I’m running, I am 95% sure this is a core sim problem, not related to addons I have installed

EDIT: Don’t really know if this has anything to do with, but I noticed that once I start filling up FMS/MCDU pages FPS starts to tank; could be a sign of these drops being related to avionics?

I dont want to jinx it for me, but I think I solved the issue… exactly what it was that solved it I’m not sure, but I:

  • removed any add on scenery that I didnt really need including (as suggested by Asobo) any add ons/scenery bought through the sim market (World Updates, City Updates, free bundle packs such as Top Gun: Maverick etc… I also deleted all bush trips, challenges, all that stuff)
  • deleted the content xml file
  • deleted all files in the SceneryIndexes folder to flush out old data
  • i also removed all AIG model matching planes/folders from the community folder

First thing I noticed was that the sim immediately started much faster. After a 5 hour flight, everything was ok still.

no

Have you disabled/removed all your mods and addons?

no

Brief description of the issue:

After some time flying (irrelevant of aircraft and location) my performance degrades more and more up until, including, approach where it is most severe…
When exiting the flight i also have those lags in the menu, so it affects the whole application.
Checking via Task Manager my CPU/GPU/RAM: no issue, nothing spiking there, everything as it should be.

Similar-ish solution over here, I have drastically mitigated the performance hit by not using FSHud/FSLTL
I’ll need to take a closer look about which of the two is causing the issue (my bets are on FSHud though, having it running while at the gate seemed to have a noticeable impact on frames, closing it afterwards seemed to return things to normal)

I am not sure that is what I would call a solution. If I have to delete most of the content and only leave what I absolutely need for a given flight and then have to reinstall or even redownload all of that at some other time if I decide I want to fly a bush trip or in a certain region.
Then I really think Asobo has their head up their you know what😁

I already move things in and out of the community folder for every update and usually try to keep things trimmed to reduce loading time.
But literally no other sim from MS or another supplier ever required any more than that.

Honestly 3 years in this shouldn’t be a topic anymore. The fact that we’re back here again is quite disappointing. You’d think we’d be past stuff like this but here we are again.

They ought to concentrate on issues like these and other various sim improvements, and pause the development of additional stuff for a while.
