Mediocre Performance On High End PC

Turn your settings up to Ultra.

With your machine and those settings you’re putting everything on the MainThread and you need to balance it out. Your resolution is also quite low so your GPU is not really adding much to the party, and you’ve got DLSS enabled too which will exacerbate the situation.

I’ll bet you’ll find that you get better performance in Ultra than you do at medium. To put it bluntly, you need to load up your GPU as much as possible.

The CPU temperature is the main issue for sure! The MSFS numbers say your CPU takes 32 ms per frame in that location (31.25 fps), while your GPU takes 16.9 ms (59.2 fps), so without the CPU bottleneck you’d get 60-ish FPS where that screenshot was taken.

The thermal paste or mounting pressure is probably the issue. Unless it’s something silly like a plastic sticker remaining between the CPU and water block
Either way, I’d recommend removing the water block, cleaning out everything with e.g. isopropyl alcohol until it’s entirely clean, and reapplying the thermal paste, and ensuring all the screws are evenly turned (work in opposite corners, turning a few turns at a time at most).

Have to agree with rhe above post. I have a 12700k with an AI OC to 4.9 and temps stay peaks around 75 <average 68> with an air cooler (not stock). Your temp of 95 is very high especially with a liquid cooler so thats were i would start

I believe I have found the issue. No plastic that was forgotten to be removed, but the paste job isn’t the best I would say :joy:

Ok everyone, I have managed to get CPU temps in the normal positions, however the sim is still performing not-the-best FPS wise. I gained about 5 FPS from stabilizing the temps. See the below screenshots.

Update: I have tried removing and reinstalling the graphics drivers, but, still the same. I also removed MSFS off my HDD and put it on my SSD and I am still getting the same results. I am at a loss here.

As someone suggested above, put all the sim settings to Ultra but leave the TLOD at 200. Turn off DLSS. See if that makes any difference.

What refresh rate are you running your 49 inch ultra wide monitor at?

I run my ultrawide at it’s stock 120hz and limit frames in the sim to 40 using vsync.

I would recommend doing what @wilco3563 has suggested to see if that makes a difference.

According to the top on the OG post you have a 50% monitor refresh rate for frame limit and V-sync enabled, try turning that off to see if that makes a difference, you might experience screen tearing,

Also can you confirm the 49 inch ultra wide monitor and if that uses G-sync?

Try removing the frame rate limit

Also try to disable rolling cache in the sim settings, see if it makes any difference.

I have 10980xe and 3090, also similar low fps on the ground using pmdg and fenix btw.

What are you getting at egll 9R

Have you tried rolling back to the previous nvidia driver. I just did that and have way better performance.

Running at 144hz

So another update, I ended up overclocking my CPU (as a last resort) up to 4.7Ghz and turned off V-Sync and now I am getting an amazing 50FPS constant. I wonder if my CPU was just underpowered for some reason but its beyond me. Now the question is will it remain stable…

Edit: Even changing settings to ultra with TLOD and OLOD down to 100 I still see stable 50 FPS at JFK in the PMDG 737

Try and cut your refresh rate now to 60-75 hz with vsync disabled and I think you may get a few more fps.

What do you have the scaling set to? Below 100%?
Try turning it up to 130%-150%

Have you tried loading your GPU like I suggested?

Your settings are too low for your system, it no longer follows that lower settings equals higher fps.

“Back in the day” I had FSX installed on a Velociraptor HDD that was dedicated exclusively to the sim, went through a meticulous install and defrag process to ensure that the sim’s files were installed contiguously on the fastest sectors of the drive, and routinely kept the drive defragged. This was all on a very high end (for the day) Falcon Northwest Mach V.

Even that wasn’t enough to keep FSX from inexplicably sputtering and stuttering at times for no apparent reason. And that arrangement would never do justice to FS 2020.

If FS 2020 is on a spinning drive instead of a fast SSD, that is likely to be at least a part of the problem.

Yes, I turned everything up to ultra and lowered TLOD and OLOD down to 100 and still get great results.

So everyone, thank you all for your assistance! I think it is safe to say this has been solved! My steps in resolving this issue were:

  1. Reinstall MSFS on an SSD
  2. Clean up my thermal paste on water cooler/CPU and reapply.
  3. Get rid of all dust in fans/intake (2 and 3 reduced CPU temps by A LOT)
  4. Deleted and reinstalled my graphics drivers
  5. Overclocked my CPU up to 4.7Ghz

The five steps listed above made my FPS go from 25-30 with medium settings, to over 50 FPS with ultra settings.
