This debate is slightly redundant anyway because Asobo have said that Bing intend to improve their DEM data so improvements to the way the world looks will come anyway. If people want to pay early for DEM data then thats up to them.
The only way I’d be up for paying for DEM data is that it was significantly better than anything thats available, not just slightly better. People have there is in existence DEM data for Switzerland thats accurate to 1 meter. That would be make the Swiss alps look incredible.
The product looks interesting but it’s very pricey for what it is, with dem data for NZ being free and so on.
I’ll wait for a world update, and with the new mesh tools for MSFS we might get a better mesh from the community soon (check out the free 10m resolution dem for Austria on flightsim.to, looks stunning).

can you share the name of that austrian freeware?
Does this high res mesh only pop in when you get close? I remember a italy mesh a little while back that did that.
In any case the nz mesh costs less than 20nzd, I mean make your own assessment of value but I’d hardly call it pricey.

The pop-in issue is limited but indeed present in the Austrian and Italian meshes, I flew about an hour from DE to AU and the pop-in was less noticeable than with the IT DEM.
That’s also the reason why I find Orbx product interesting.
My consideration about price is purely personal: taken by itself - again to me - the product has a better value than an airport, but considering how many places could use better DEM/meshes going down that route when the base sim should and probably will get better doesn’t make much sense to me.
Having just flown about the Alp, Sounds, and Welly. I’d say it’s worth the cost. It isn’t just sharper mountain tops, it’s the lumpy bumpy nature of all our hills and valleys. There’s just so much more texture.
And if they stick even higher res stuff in? Sweet as.
If people want to wait for Asobo to put this in? Cool. They can do them. This is here now and makes a noticeable difference.

Some screenshots from last night that I think highlight the nicer bits.
From memory those spots are a lot smoother with the default height meshes.

Definitely has a cleaner look. Hope its taken care World over.
“mandatory by default” Says who? Care to name all the other flight sims that provided the highest available mesh data by default? I’ll wait…
Happy so far. The peaks are more defined, as are the relatively flat areas. Less scenery popup too.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but MFS2020 is the first one to PROMISE what it promises.
Also,this is 2021.
I didn’t get a state of the art sim to have morphing textures and then to have to pay for them to be fixed

Did they promise the highest quality available mesh data worldwide? I must have missed that.
MSFS promised elevation meshes and ortho textures for the whole world (where available) and that’s what they’ve provided. This is an entirely optional product by a completely different company that provides even more resolution than the already good default. If you don’t want to pay, then don’t buy it but MSFS never promised 1m LIDAR data or even the 10m resolution of this ORBX pack.

To the two prior commenters.
They may not have promised this crazy resolution, but you could certainly expect them to not have introduced the crazy morphing that is going on. And obviously it is technically possible to get rid of that, albeit for a premium.
That is what I am furious about. Not that they opted for 50m or 100m instead of 1m, bc that makes sort of sense given it’s all streamed data.

MSFS have provided very nice quality meshes in many parts of the world that have seen world updates so far. The BIG problem is the way MSFS handles the LOD and the terrain morphing as the distance away from the terrain increases or decreases. Sometimes you have to be right on top of say a mountain before the highest quality mesh setting will morph into appearance.
As far as I know MSFS have NOT promised any kind of super high quality meshes, however, they did state they were giving high quality meshes in the world update areas. We should expect them to implement those in a way that actually work and do not take away from the experience with the bad implementation of their LOD settings.

I care only for the morphing problem which ORBX clearly say it’s fixed through their product.
Pretty eye candy don’t you think ?
What does that mean ? That Asobo will let this be a payable fix for us ?
