But that won’t send the game audio through that cable will it?
My current setup is via an eGPU (RTX2070, I think it will be enough to power the screen res 3440x1440) connected from my PC via Thunderbolt then HDMI from the eGPU box to the TV which sends the sound. Not sure that would still work if I have DP cable from box to monitor instead.
Oh, just looked and the DP does handle audio. Goodie!
This looks a pretty good deal too, reduced from £600:
Another pint I forgot to mention is that with VA the blacks are more black. With IPS I’ve noticed they tend to be more grey. So will get better contrast with VA.
If native G Sync is important to you then you will be looking at around £1000 for an ultrawide.
The ALIENWARE AW3423DW ticks all your boxes and has HDR but is £1099. It’s OLED too which works best with HDR. I’ve tested my LG OLED tv out with MSFS and it looks amazing. It has very impressive specs and I would be tempted to get this myself if I was in the market for a new monitor. I would definitely be looking into this kind of monitor for my next.
It would be great to see this Alienware monitor in action with MSFS.
I really don’t think native G Sync is needed for MSFS. This article explains it quite well. It does mention in here too that you generally only notice it on higher fps games.
“Screen tearing can occur at any time, though it is most prevalent during fast motion, particularly when a game runs at a higher frame rate than the monitor can handle or when the frame rate changes dramatically and the monitor can’t keep up.”
That would be the consensus purely from a visuals point of view. You do however need to consider that with a higher resolution, the lower the performance will be. And performance with flight simulator is very important. Ive found that 1440p is a nice balance.
I’m only looking to reach a nice locked 30fps with my current system. Of course when I upgrade the PC I hope this target can change but I’d be over the moon with 45-60 eventually.
Currently I can keep to 30 pretty much all the time with my 2560x1600 screen (OneXPlayer when not using the external screen) but my external is only 1920x1080, so I reckon 3440x1440 is gonna be fine for the RTX2070 to hit 30fps?
It’s not that easy … e.g. in 4k I fly at LOD 400, in 1440p 300 and 1080p 200, fps 30, 60 and 70 repectively. However I’m not a God, I use DLSS and NIS for 1440p and 4k and DLDSR for 1080p so they are actually rendered at a lower resolution. R7 3800X, rtx3060.
2560x1600 is highest I’ve tried, but yes this holds 30 ok. Obviously it’s the same cap on my old TV. Hoping the ultrawide won’t affect things too much more - seems it only drops when CPU limited. My GPU has headroom but I don’t mind dropping render res a little bit.
Think I’m gonna get the MateView. The 1500r curve is better then the Philips 1800r and £100 cheaper and read a review that says sound is pretty decent (just lacks bass). I have some speakers I can use too but running out of desk space lol
You won’t be disappointed with the Mateview. I spent so much time researching and also sent a lot of monitors back because I wasn’t happy.
The speakers are quite decent for monitor speakers. You can actually get this model without the speaker too. As the speaker is actually integrated into the stand it makes it slightly bigger than you would usually get with an integrated speaker so it actually sounds a lot better than others I’ve tried. Yes the bass isn’t the best but it’s still better than all the other monitors I’ve heard which have an integrated speaker.
It doesn’t have HDR though so if this is important to you then you may want to look elsewhere.
There are so many things to consider, which is why it took me so long. Another thing I found is that there are different standards of HDR in monitors. Most of the cheaper sub £500 monitors the HDR isn’t as good as a higher end monitor like that Alienware one I posted a link to. It also works best on an OLED or IPS and not so good on VA.
If there’s one thing I learned during my research was that there doesn’t seem to be a monitor that does “everything” even the higher priced ones don’t do everything. A lot of it comes down to personal preference.
No not average … 30fps is over New York, I can get pushing 50 over my native Isle of Man but that’s probably helped by seemingly missing LODs there. I should mention that my graphics are all ultra except clouds to high whichever resolution I use, with my set up they have to be when using high LOD settings or I get mainthread limited. I should also mention I fly gliders.
I’ve tested the HDR out on the Mateview and to be honest it’s barely noticeable compared to when it’s switched off. Although the reviews do say that it has lackluster HDR. I think you’ll find this with most monitors around this price range. They advertise themselves as having HDR10 “support” but don’t actually have HDR certification.
The BenQ you’re looking at looks pretty decent the specs look very similar to the Mateview GT. Looks like the biggest difference is the larger curvature. I really want to see what the Alienware AW3423DW looks like in MSFS.
FYI I bought the BenQ one today, arrives on Friday. Thanks once again for answering all my crazy questions today — it’s been a lot of help. I’ll let you know what it’s like when it arrives! Cheers mate
