Move MSFS2020 to New Drive

I had exactly the same issue when trying to move it from my D: drive which is a hard disk, to a new fast M.2 based SSD. I spent a lot of time on the command line understanding the ‘junction’ which is a hard link from the C drive to the D drive. I managed to remove the junctions with rmdir, then copy across the files with xcopy. However after multiple hours of effort, with all the files moved over the game would crash back to windows desktop during loading.
I decided the simplest solution was a uninstall and reinstall clean on drive C:. Took a while but worked out better.

This is basically what I ended up doing also except I just deleted all the files in the Official and community folders and the folders themselves on the C: drive. Set up a folder on my E: drive and started up the sim. I had to redownload and install the 108GB ( I had also changed the last line of the cfg file to the new location and the download went there) and a few addon aircraft and airports to my new community file. After having downloaded the 108GB it only installed 79GB of that and I had to go to Content Manager to install the other 27GB. It all works now and I got a lot of GBs off my C: drive.

How many times can you employ the Apps Move facility? My install (after 40 hours of download) is on the E: Drive. However the folder has two OneStore and two Official directories. (One is empty and the other contains the usual packages). 2020 runs but I’m sure this is incorrect. So to fix this, I want to move the install to C: then after that has completed, move 2020 from C: back to a newly formatted E: which is an SSD I keep for 2020 only.

Should work, right?

Should work as you say.

Why don’t you just delete the empty directories?

I could delete the empty but my OneStore containing 155 GB is buried here:

E:\WpSystem\S-1-5-21-1587830104-208576589-4193820454-1001\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Official\OneStore

The empty OneStore directory is here as I normally would expect to find it:
E:\WpSystem\S-1-5-21-1587830104-208576589-4193820454-1001\Official\OneStore

The config file obviously points to the correct OneStore but it’s untidy and I don’t need any more trouble with the downloader! [

I had FS2020 installed in my D:\FS2020 directory by the download program.

My OneStore directory is here: D:\FS2020\Official\OneStore at 107 GB.

I don’t know how you got your files to store where they are.

I don’t understand this statement.
If it is burried here, how is it empty?

The path has a lot of files in it.
Look at the “\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe” directory.

This directory has ~155 GB of files (packages?) It is referenced in the .cfg file.
E:\WpSystem\S-1-5-21-1587830104-208576589-4193820454-1001\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Official\OneStore

This OneStore directory is empty. Left over from a previous attempt to download, I think..
My first download went on for a week. With a different ISP 1.14.5.0 was something like 35 hours.

E:\WpSystem\S-1-5-21-1587830104-208576589-4193820454-1001\Official\OneStore

Anyway, thank you all. I’ll see if I can summon enough courage to try the “Move” scheme.

Move will work.

Move did indeed do the job!
The Settings ->Apps->MSFS2020->Move worked perfectly. I moved my 2020 install off E: to C: then formatted E: then moved the C: install back to E: All this done in about 30 minutes.

I tried this - using MOVE to move the App from C: to E: then transfered the packages folder to E:.

I then edited the last line of the UserCfg.op to point to E. Now when I launch it just stays on the Checking For Updates page for hours.
Can someone please advise what I’ve done wrong?
Thanks

Not sure about doing the :
“transfered the packages folder”
“edited the last line of the UserCfg.op to point to E”

I don’t think they are required and may be the problem.

I thought the last line of the UserCfg.opt HAD to point to the location of the Official and community folders?

It does but FS2020 put it there. Same with folders put where they are
by FS2020.

You can move them where you want but FS2929 will n9t know where they are.

I would suggest you :

Right click Start
Click Settings
Click Apps
Go down to MS Flight Simulator
Click Advanced Options
Under RESET, click “Repair”

Your FS2020 should be fine now.

If not, click Uninstall.
The base program installed it on the boot drive (usually C:)

  • (the initial 1.07 GB) will be uninstalled.

Go back to MS Store or Steam and re-install, repair,

  • modify FS2020.

I know MS Store will only reinstall the initial 1.07 GB.
I had to tell the download program where the 109 GB was.

Mine is in the WpSystem directory on D: drive.

I installed FS2020 here: D:\FS2020.

Just to let you know, FS is not installed in that path for me. My path was:

C:\Users\Your username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator\UserCfg.opt

I don’t know why. I bought it on Steam and downloaded as per usual.

I should have noted that this Reply pertains to MS Store only.

Do you know of a steam thread? I’m considering a move and don’t want to have to install again because it takes me like 15 - 20 hours on my krunk internet

If you are moving FS2020, I would use the “Settings, Apps, MSFS” Move command.

This should work for you on Steam.

It does not affect either Steam or MS Store.
It is done locally on your PC only.

Gotcha, I’ve gone into what I presume to be the windows settings and I didn’t see a move option, what do you mean by a move command?

Right click Start
Go to Settings
Go to Apps
Scroll down the list of APPs to Microsoft Flight Simulator APP
Click “MOVE”
