MS/Asobo - How Did This Happen? Free Flight is Awful

I’ve already wasted too much time on this broken piece of software since Tuesday and I don’t intend to spend any more, it’s currently pointless as only Asobo can fix it (I hope).

I’ll probably be back of course but there’s currently literally no point having it on my system and rewarding the creators financially for what they’ve delivered.

First location I ever heard it that way was listening to the ATC at Princess Juliana in St. Maarten (TNCM). First thought it was just the ATC operator’s speech pattern but then dug into it and found out it’s the ICAO-accepted method; and ICAO 'fife" is the substitute for “five”. And it’s that way in MSFS 2020, too. Have to admit it seems pretty weird to hear it when flying around the US, and it you ever listen to LiveATC you’ll never hear it that way.

The suits will screw things up every time. It’s like a real-life Dilbert cartoon.

I agree. But imagine, the wailing would have been just as loud if they’d delayed it again. So they were ■■■■■■ either way.

I’m able to at least fly now, so I’m glad they went ahead and released even with all the problems, just so long as they remain diligent about getting them fixed.

That would have easier to manage than this.

They could have continued to work on the codebase without having to placate a raging user base who want the sim working now.

Definitely the lesser of two evils.

Exactly. Jorg is going to have to come clean, because he’s just used up all his credits with the community on day 1. Any other type of software released in that state would have had serious consequences, and as a simmer since FS 1.0 I can’t help but feel like my patience and understanding has been abused. Where was QA in this release, outsourced to the cheapest vendor with zero knowledge of what a flight Sim is? I understand that justifying a significant Azure workload is likely a tough sell internally, with the company prioritising recurring paying customers, but in that case do a proper launch. Launch it on Xbox first and work on getting the PC version working with peripherals, existing add-on, etc… The state of this thing…
The next dev Q&A better be less lip service and some true insights. This community has incredible patience and tolerance, but it’s a finite amount nonetheless.

less lip service and also maybe tone down all the self congratulatory remarks, there’s way too much of that, we are so proud of what we achieved, “with” the community “for” the community, we are now 800 strong, it has been an incredible journey,
ok… enough already, get it sorted

In my experience I’ve had some good moments, and some bad. In certain locations free flight looks amazing, in other it doesn’t. Probably because the sim is more server based.

Reminds me a lot of the 2020 launch to be honest with the default planes having bugs. Hopefully after a few months they’ll fix up a lot of the issues.

As soon as i get into the cockpit, that’s where my game ends, I cant take control, my view just slowly pans down for some reason, cant even use mouse look.

Played some of the landing challenges from 2020 in 2024 and can definitely see the potential of the new sim in those (things like rough runways, turbulence “thumps”, better clearings through the trees) but free flight is a huge letdown and seems to have been neglected in the development process.

Awkward horizontally-scrolling plane selection UI, 3D models once you’ve picked an aircraft being all different scales with no ability to rotate or zoom for closer inspection, and even the profile stats for free flight listing “# successful takeoffs” only and none of the other parameters from 2020. The free flight experience is just rough and unpolished imho.

another minor complaint. i know ATC has always been bad. but when on an IFR clearance one should not be told “resume own navigation”. the core principle of IFR flight plans is one is always being directed, or vectored, somewhere.

Indeed ATC is a disappointment as well. While the voice sounds better, as in more natural, the diction is completely wrong. “Climb and…[pause]…maintain 9000”. It sounds nothing like real ATC. And instructions are just as bad as they’ve always been. There also seems to be 1 male and 1 female voice. Or not much more.
MS was always quiet on ATC for MSFS2024, now we know why. It’s a shame to have done what seems to be a great job with the integrated planner but neglected the delivery method… ATC in my opinion is one of the first thing that kills immersion if not done well. That’s why I’m turning it off for now.
I was really impressed with sayintentions.ai, shame MS didn’t license their technology.

Something tells me nearly all AAA exclusives are going to be like this now. It’s been happening for a while - Starfield, Redfall, Cyberpunk, Forza Motorsport, etc. I do not think that’s a coincidence. It’s just the way business is now down.

So glad MSFS 20 is looking and running so well right now. I love that game! It really showcases what the Series X can do, well almost! Hoping they will roll out the improvements soon.

I think the 2024 in the title does not refer to the year of launching but to the year they had the idea of a new version nd started development. That would explain many things, that they had just few months to half-bake some new features without thinking too much and no time for QA

According to Jorg, “all skies are blue” in his emergency update at top of forums. As if he thinks launch day issues are what we’re feeling ripped off about.

His statement is just a joke…without comment

what i find particularly ironic is that AI ATC addons like Say Intentions exist (and are actually amazing – this is coming from someone who is TOTALLY over the AI bubble and wishes it would go away), and Microsoft has its own AI called Copilot (literally, COPILOT) which it is busy jamming into every nook and cranny of Windows 11/Office/Visual Studio, and yet no attempt has been made to leverage this in Microsoft’s premium online game. intead, we have MSFS 2000-quality text-to-speech ATC which can’t even read a simple METAR without putting pauses in all the wrong places and emphasizing all the wrong words.

I don’t mind ATC voices. All I need is ATC that gives me approach and runway instructions before I start descending, not when I am a few nm from final approach fix. Or ATC that gives vectors automatically.

Exactly! How can FS2024 ATC not be as functional and accurate (forgetting gripes about correct terminolgy) as FSX was?? Really hard to believe that in 4 years since 2020 , and all the complaints, this amazing team at Asobo couldn’t come up with something as ggod if not better. I mean… 4 years!

it is hard to believe, you have right here a community screaming for atc,
but no…
