[MSFS2024] Curtiss C-46 Commando

My quick observations:

  • turn & slip indicator has been installed
  • the prop hub assembly is no longer see-through

Will do some flights later on to check the other improvements.

Thank you MS for additional love for this legendary aircraft!

EDIT:

  • marks on manifold pressure and RPM gauges now make sense (there are 4 marks between the numbers)
  • supercharges can be operated manually (previously they kicked in automatically around 10k ft), so when taking off from high elevation airfield, it is now possible to get max power from the engines

Does anyone know how to extinguish the nose light?

Does anyone know whether they fixed the engine issue where one of the engines would go out on startup?

Just to be clear, this nose light stays on all the time, even during daylight.

I can get the prop spinning and the smoke. But no catch on the start. CTRL-E will get the engines properly started but I’m missing a step and I’m not sure the CL or the Manual are steering me fully correct.

Weird, I’m able to get both engines started fine. Are you waiting two seconds after switching on the starter then switching on mesh and waiting two more seconds before switching on the engine primer?

I’ve also been able to start without issue. And it looks like they fixed the issue where starting the engine first causes crossfeed issues.

I love the new Buffalo livery! Also, surprisingly my add-on liveries I downloaded for the 2020 version on Flightsim.to still work and have defaulted to the modern avionics version.

Hm. That´s strange. On my Xbox version the superchargers do in fact still kick in at 10.000 Feet automatically.

Apart from that. It´s amazing that they did not bother to fix the gyro pilot. In the Trimotor for example, but also the DC3, the gyro pilot keeps the pitch when activating it. In the C46 it dives nose down all the time. I made the team aware of this via Zendesk way back when the C46 first released: And they did not find a way to fix this? Amazing …

These release notes are grossly exaggerated. They fix the reversed cowl flaps lever, and that translates to “improved cockpit controls, switches, and instrumentation”?

It’s a stretch to call this an upgrade.

I mean, its still as good or as bad as in 2020. But given how much attention the 707 has gotten and rightfully the respective praise, I had hopes that the Stratoliner and Commando would get to similar levels.

Okay, they did not do this and I kinda understand it, since it is even more niche then the 707. But that they did not even fix bugs that were present about two years ago. The superchargers are a key element of a plane that flew across the Himalayan mountains. And the least I want to expect from an auto- or gyropilot is that it does not dive straight into the ground when activating it …

Come on, this is annoying beyond measure. In that case it would have been better to not do an update at all and focus the resources on different projects. I mean, Inibuilds has A TON of bugs to fix on their own aircraft but also on local legends/famous flyers they did for Asobo.

I switched back to the 2020 version, and with all of it’s quirks, I like it more than the upgrade. I do most of my flying at sunrise and sunset, and the 2024 version is useless with that spotlight coming out of the nose. The flood light doesn’t emit light at all; it just turns red. Very disappointed.

Will Inibuilds fix these post AAU5 release bugs? Or just leave them like many other aircraft issues?

Are you having graphical glitches on the Buffalo livery? I had both translucent floating textures on both left and right landing gear doors, the front of the wings was flickering, and the word Buffalo on the right wing was flickering.

I don’t notice that, but I did notice a flickering problem on the nose of the orange and chrome livery. When I reloaded it was gone.

I’ll look more closely later today though

Could be dynamic settings on my end

The superchargers are indeed weird.

While the levers on the center console seem to do something with the power, when activated the manifold pressure goes through the roof and the needles read all over the place. Though they seem to add power.

And yes, the superchargers kick in automatically at 10k ft - as before.

So it is actually possible to add manual superchargers on top of the automatic ones.

facepalm GIF

The best implementation would be to

  • get rid off the automatic superchargers, and
  • fix the manual activation and keep only that one.

Will do some more flying before I report it as a bug.

Does anyone’s physical mixture axis not show up on the physical levers in game? I can move mine on the Bravo Throttle Quadrant and hear and see the engine start to loose rpm but the cockpit mixture levers don’t move. I can move them with my mouse and achieve the same things.

Yeah, I had to manually adjust my mixtures with my mouse instead of my hardware. Not too annoying since it has the auto mixture setting as opposed to full manual, but I’m hoping that gets updated

They really got our hopes up with the amazing job with the 707 and then just dropped the ball on this.

Thank you Asobo/MS for rebuilding this beast, it needed it. The textures seem to be miles ahead of where they were and beautiful job on the prop animation and hubs, love glancing out the window at those. VC seems like a big upgrade and now has cargo interior (not sure if it did before). Maybe some suggestions would be for a little stronger engine sound inside and it seems like the visual speed doesn’t correlate to the indicator, but that could be me. Also seems quite nose heavy on the ground, very easy to push over. All in all, what a great improvement!!
