Ok, this should be my final post on this topic hopefully haha.
Finally got my system sorted since putting the (repaired) 4090 back in.
Again, the backstory is that my 4090 melted itself to death, despite having a firm power connection, using a 90 degree adapter (because the strix is too big to fit in the lianli o11d xl without the cable pushing into the glass). Asus/Nvidia/overclockers uk refused to touch it simply because I did what I assumed to be the sensible thing, avoiding cable bend by using a solid 90 degree adapter. Luckily, “Joshi Repairs” got me sorted and repaired the card within only a few weeks for a very reasonable £125. If ever your card melts like mine did, and you’re in the UK, Joshi Repairs was great from my experience.
In the meantime I’d managed to buy a 9070xt to keep me in the air.
My monitor has a native res of 7680x2160…which was a bit too much for the 9070xt realistically…so I reduced res to 5120x1440, set the ultra profile in flight sim, and turned on afmf 2.1…performance was great and smooth. Probably the best I’ve ever seen tbh.
Anyway, I get the 4090 back, amd remember how annoying the sim can be in terms of stutters…Tried keeping 5120x1440…stutters…tried setting everything max…stutters…tried 7680x2160…stutters…tried with and without frame gen…stutters…but…at least…with the new drivers, I can enable frame gen and the override if I want to…without the whole PC crashing (which would previously happen with full res and frame gen/app/override).
So I’ve now remembered another key thing to do with this setup.
Follow this guide, setting everything in the graphics setting section exactly as show, including oled/tlod at 100.
Then…REDUCE TRAFFIC.
I think because of my monitor res, I need to reduce traffic A LOT in order to keep mainthread happier.
If I reduce resolution, then I’ll be even less often limited by GPU…so that doesn’t work…if I INCREASE resolution further…GPU thread will be even less happy, often getting into the 20-28fps region…
so the key is to try and get settings to where main thread is happy and you’re mostly gpu bound AT NATIVE RES.
Setting everything per the above guide, and then reducing all the traffic sliders to 10 has done this for me.
I can then enable frame gen to bring back some smoothness and I’m finally happy with the sim again.
So for me, this new driver is a winner.
I am using DLSS DLAA to keep native res, but gain less shimmering on certain objects, and with the new pre-sets, issues with water seem to be resolved too.
I am using frame gen with the latest pre-set to keep things feeling smooth.
Everything is running great now, very smooth, and things still look pretty good, even with tlod 100…maybe because of the resolution.
So I think this concludes my experience with the new driver…the initial issues I had were probably not driver related, but more system setup and game setting related…and this driver is the first one I’ve been able to use while keeping everything official, no third party tools, only the nvidia app over-rides and keep native res and still enable frame gen,
Very happy now.
