There’s 2 sharpen settings, one for 2d and one for VR, can you confirm you turned the one in GraphicsVR
off?
Changing the sharpening from 1 to 0 in the cfg file makes a big difference to me. 80NIS and 80% sharpen and massively reduced shimmering compared to before. Previously I never went over 20% sharpening.
Berlin discovery flight 37fps, Everest 46. Most settings on high with 150/150 LOD.
Remember to make the cfg file read only after changing the value or the sim will reset it.
Interesting, I always struggled to see any difference with disabling sharpening in the cfg file, so much that I suspected that it was not functioning correctly and was permanently on and generating the shimmering. 3090, quest 2 max resolution
I’ll try again in combination with your tool and report back
Here is a great post on how to do disable the sharpening step by step:
I’m not sure this is a wise thing. I’m assuming if the file is read only, NO changes we make to FS2020 settings in-sim will be stored. This won’t just affect the sharpen setting, correct?
Correct, but it’s easy to change back and forth with the cfg file for whenever you need to change. As always it’s probably best to make a back up file also. But I believe if you do not do this then the sim will convert the sharpening back to 1 during loading.
Thanks for your reply, do i need to do this every MSFS session ?
I will test again but so far it does not hit my fps…
What FPS are you getting with your settings and on whicj headset?
I have a 3080/G2 and would be getting low frames with those settings (prpbably no more than 30)
In the Usercfg? Yea, of course the VR one, its off
10900K @5.2Ghz
6800XT @2600Mhz with fps locked at 32Hz.
I tested several times and couldn’t believe it myself either. I used to run it at 100OXR/100RS comfortably. NIS has really improved the clarity using the above settings.
I have mine locked at 32fps in Radeon software. If I don’t lock the fps, I am averaging 38-40fps, but it does introuduce miscrostutters every now and then. 32fps locked seams a lot smoother than even 40fps. I have a pretty great binned 6800XT that overclocks well and stays cool under water. Timespy scores around 21500.
I was curious about this and just did a test. After changing Sharpen in VR section to 0 and not marking the file Read Only, I entered FS, flew with VR, and exited. When I checked the file it had not reverted to Sharpen = 1. It’s likely that during an upgrade of the FS2020 version that this file might revert, but at least with my first test marking Read Only is not necessary. YMMV. I’m going to continue to check between FS runs.
I can confirm that setting Sharpen to 0 made a huge difference for me with shimmering! Thanks for passing this tip along!
They are not the same. OpenXR scales the number of pixels, while NIS (and in-game) scalar changes the sizes of the image.
In terms of pixels rendered, option 1 gives you 0.7x0.7=49%, while option 2 is only 0.5x0.5x1.4=35%.
I tried taking screenshots but the saved dds files seem corrupted. I tried multiple dds viewers/converters they all report error or crash.
I haven’t done it in the latest build but https://getpaint.net opened up the dds files ok before.
Using Oculus Quest 2 with the oculus runtime and want to try NIS.
Windows Mixed reality is installed but not the active runtime. The Render scale is set to 100% there anyway.
System is NVIDIA 2070 Super, i9 9900, 64Gb RAM
Questions:
Does NIS require the Windows Mixed Reality runtime? Because so many of the help videos use it to set the render scale and to verify the API is installed it almost seems like a requirement. Or do I leave the Oculus rutime active?
Does anything have to be done in Windows Mixed reality or can it be ignored?
What render resolution if any is recommended in the Oculus application? I am currently using 1.3 good for 4704 x 2384
I know that it is recommended that within MSFS that the scaling be set to 100% and that is what it is usually set at anyway and I am not unhappy with the current results but certaily always looking for an improvement in sharpness if it can be had with at least the same FPS.
Anything other setting or detail that I am missing?
Thanks,
Steve
It can be ignored. No need for the WMR tools. The check for the layer being properly installed is now performed in the NIS scaler configuration tool that gets installed
Have you tried Gimp? I had success with it.
