Here are some shots testing out the FlyingIron Grumman F6F Hellcat in MSFS 2024, flying from 6TX2 Rancho Sabino Grande Airport in Utopia, Texas, which is one of three private airports owned by well-known warbird owner/pilot Rod Lewis (Lewis Air Legends) - the other two being XA66 El Jardin and 2TX4 Lewis Ranch (as well as a large hangar at San Antonio Intl.). Rod Lewis is the owner of the Alex Vraciu F6F-3 Hellcat, BuNo.40467, which used to be based at Duxford when owned by The Fighter Collection. After acquiring the Hellcat in 2012, Rod Lewis had it fully restored from the ground-up at Ezell Aviation, and it didn’t fly again until late 2024.

Testing out the F6F, having installed the update that FI released back in December, I find that unfortunately the engine/prop torque is having way too much effect in-flight, requiring an incredible amount of rudder and aileron trim to balance the aircraft in cruise (at which stage of flight it shouldn’t require any). Hopefully a fix will be made available soon.

Four aircraft formation representing three Air Armament School RCAF P-51Ds and a 443 Auxiliary squadron P-51D from New Westminster, Sea Island British Columbia(Lead aircraft). All aircraft were used at the Trenton, Ontario Air Armament School for gunnery, bombing and rocket training during 1950-52

Taking the big girl out for a flight down the California coast. I just love this thing - the most accurate visual model, great textures, highly accurate flight dynamics, accurate engine start-up procedures and excellent sounds, all for free.

I do wish the underside staining was a little less heavy handed on the Hellcat.

Very nice repaint though, it is certainly much missed in the UK flying often as it did with the Fighter Collection’s other Grumman aircraft, their Wildcat and their Bearcat which is still has along with the Tigercat which also left for pastures new, many a years ago now.

the Whirlwind was made by Rob Richardson, but he never published it. You could ask him?

For anyone who may be interested, here are a couple of maps I’ve put together of real-world modern airports where you can find operational WWI, WWII and Korean War-era prop-driven warbirds flying today (or that at least have the potential to fly). When you click on any of the airports you will find a short description included of the owners, museums, organizations and restoration shops that are based at those airports and fly (or have flown) warbirds at those locations. I’m still adding to these as time goes by. My main focus has just been on the fighters, bombers and transports, as there are of course many hundreds (if not a thousand) more airports in the world where you will also find WWII and Korean War-era trainers and liaison types based. The main goal of this is to illustrate just how many airports there really are in the world where flying warbirds are based and operated on a routine basis, and to provide inspiration to perhaps check out some of these same airports/locations in the sim.
