Radials 'Round the World

You’re right! I was so focused on the track that I didn’t notice that the stadium is wrong…

Next stop is Princess Juliana International, I’m taking the DC-6 all the way over! It’ll be my first IFR flight with beyond ATC so I hope I don’t mess up!

I’m glad you like my little thread. I like posting updates!

Sweet! Do you have a livery picked out? Which variant is your favorite?

I’ve been flying the Six in 2024 and doing my best to not lose my sanity from all the nonsense I face every time I give it a go.

It’s been challenging, but I absolutely adore the Six and cannot wait for it to get its proper 2024 treatment plan from PMDG. How I ever wish they would build us another vintage aircraft.

I wish we could get another vintage airliner so detailed and bug free (in 2020 anyway), even if it’s not from PMDG. The Redwing Connie comes close, but textures are a bit of a letdown.

In my head, I’ve converted the cargo variant to a be a motorhome in the sky, so I’ll fly the 6A. That sure sounds silly typing it out! As far as liveries, I’m avoiding commercial liveries if I can, and sticking to bare metal for the prop liners. I’m a sucker for polished bare aluminum!

BeyondATC has been pretty great for me. It’s definitely more fun than selecting a choice from the ATC window (if, of course, you’re using voice recognition, which I do).

Be sure you watch your SIDs and STARs so ATC doesn’t ask you to climb to FL240, although you can always request what you’d actually planned for.

I’m looking forward to your report!

If A2A bring us the Stratocruiser, I might just implode.

Story time, my friend!

I was fighting with my computer all last weekend. Hard crashes for unknown reasons. My processor was running slightly hotter than usual, roughly 5°C, so it did crash itself with overheat protection twice, but I had 6 or 7 other crashes for other reasons. I blew the dust out because the thermal paste isn’t old. That didn’t help.

Next, I identified a crashing issue related to a Windows GameInput process as a result of an update that installed itself at some point. That didn’t help either.

That’s when I read that there’s a known issue with Nvidia’s latest driver that caused system crashes. I rolled back the driver using DDU, and that seemed to work!

So I committed to the next leg of my world tour. KMIA to TNCM in the DC-6 using BeyondATC. I almost never fly IFR, so I had to remember proper phrasing while learning a new program, and yes, BATC yelled at me when I got it wrong.

Everything was going great until roughly 10 miles away from TNCM. Hard crash AGAIN! 5 hours of flying gone in an instant, and my longest flight ever.

I took my PC apart with the intention of changing the thermal paste, and I realized that, at some point, the CPU cooler worked itself loose and wasn’t making full contact. My poor 5800X3D was cooking itself all weekend :frowning:

Having finally found the last of several problems, I changed the paste and put the cooler back properly. That was Sunday night, and I haven’t had time to fly since.

I’ll repeat the leg next weekend, and I’ll be sure to post an update!

OUCH!!

The positive is you identified a reason for the issues.

I’ve been feeling mighty envious of your endeavor here. I’ve never even tried to do a world tour, and the times I’ve simply tried a West-to-East Coast flight here in the U.S. of A. I always get derailed.

Glad you’re still at it!

I haven’t been that mad in a long time, let me tell you!

I’ve tried a world tour a couple times and given up because it’s a big task, but I’m committed this time. Gotta find joy in the hobby again, right? Fortunately, taking this on is working just like I’d hoped.

Why not try navigating across the US with the Arrows of America addon? I want to do that too!

I was SO excited about being able to have access to this when I switched from Xbox to PC, and like a complete dope I’ve never even tried a leg!

I think I have ADHD when it comes to committing to something long distance (other than a long-distance direct flight. I have flown the DC-6 and B314 from Oakland to Honolulu, for example).

It’s going to happen. You’re inspiring me to put together a plan.

Make it happen, Cap’n!

What would you be flying then?

I’m thinking the 247D!

I was hoping you would say that  I’ve been considering it myself. I’ve only flown a small part of it myself and I flew the Jenny haha. (hence only a small part)

Its has taken me 5 weeks so far to do 60 legs of 69 in my world tour and roughly 300 hrs so far. Some of those flights were airliners. Ive used the ATR for the smaller hops. Airliners are for anything over 3 to 5000 nm. Tons of DC6 time though. Its well worth it. I got probably a week left. Last flight has me excited and worried. Marracco back to my start point JFK. Just shy of 4500 miles. Found an island to land at to refuel the DC6 but total that will be around 18 hrs. Gotta finish strong lol. At the time of this message im headed from Heathrow to Innsbruck in the DC6 got about an hr left and setting up nav points to get in the valley so i can slow down enough to land. Its been rewarding and worth it.

This next leg is becoming a problem.

After last week’s hardware headaches, I tried to repeat the flight from KMIA to TNCM, but I ran into an issue with the DC-6 that I can’t recall ever having before.

I absolutely could not get the radios to work.

The AFE would power up the radios, and the Bendix comm units wouldn’t respond to any inputs. The GNS430, meanwhile, just had a black screen.

Restarting the sim didn’t help, so I got mad and gave up. Any ideas??

Were the Bendix units lit up and displaying frequencies?

Did you check the vertical strip of circuit breakers on the left end of the radio cabinet behind the Captain’s seat?

They were displaying frequencies, I just couldn’t change them. The dials on my HOTAS didn’t work, and neither did the dials in the virtual cockpit.

The screen on the 430 would turn off as well, and when I turned it back on, it would change to a slightly different shade of black.

I didn’t think to check the breakers, but I think it’s an actual bug, not something coded into the addon.

Edit: and of course everything’s working as it should now. Sigh…
