[RELEASED] Ant's Airplanes Tiger Moth

Lots of high praise for this bird in here and in the top 10 thread. Looks like I may be purchasing another plane. I did not get steered wrong on the Bird Dog, I really enjoy that gal so I may have to add the Tiger Moth to the hangar.

My ONLY issue is not actually the fault of the Tiger Moth. Neofly when it tries to adjust your fuel levels empties the oil tank and she blows up

Which is a shame as I would love to fly this aircraft in my Neofly 1930’s career - but that is an issue with Neofly not the Tiger Moth.

This is a great plane.

A typical marketing decision, one that probably wouldn’t have been made if both float and non-float versions had been released at the same time.

For the same reason why the PMDG 737-600 is so much cheaper: it’s not the most popular variant. The meat and bones of the Kodiak is being a STOL aircraft for landing off airport on short strips. This is what most people are interested in. Just like most people are much more interested in the larger 800 and 900 variants than the stubby “football” 600.

Both variants, the “Floatiak” and the 737-600 are more of a bonus kind of deal, that you’d rather like as an addition than the only variant to own, so it kinda makes sense to make them cheaper if they are not included with the base version of the aircraft.

It’s more fair for those who already own the main aircraft and it’s also an incentive to offset the more limited use of the special variant. The Floatiak can only land on water and proper runways, if you keep it realistically (and of course the mentioned effect on the aircraft’s performance) and the 600 has very limited real world routes when you want to fly those realistically as well.

There are no other limitations, both are fully realized products with all the bells and whistles of the main variant.

Also, small teams tend to charge less. And biplanes or other vintage craft are traditionally cheaper.

According to SWS part of their pricing has to do with the number of models. The Kodiak package comes with 4, regular, cargo pod, tundra, and tundra cargo pod, as they all require unique physics. And the float version was only one model so that impacted price. But I figure they didn’t want to give it away for free as it was by far the most complex of the variants.

Anyway, they are vastly different beasts, the Moth and the Floatiak, but they are both bundled with features and are a joy to fly. Both are bargains at their price for what you get.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming…

Yes, Ant’s Tiger Moth is awesome! Absolutely one of my favorites in the sim.

I can’t wait for him to do the T-28!
(Please, please, please do the T-28! )

That’s a tank, isn’t it :stuck_out_tongue:

Totally is. My dad trained in them back in the '50’s. (also looking for the T-34B as well, which Carenado has done in the past).

…pleeeeease :crossed_fingers:

Really want a vintage biplane. Is this better than the Waco that’s on sale? I own the Staggerwing and love it but don’t want something exactly the same.

I don’t have the Staggerwing ( i did have it in P3d though), but i have the Tiger Moth and Waco. The Tiger Moth is way better in my view… more in depth with more features and has a better " feel" to it

I’d rate Ant’s Tiger Moth as the best biplane in the sim.

It’s not really like the Staggerwing at all, the Staggerwing being closed cockpit and quite luxurious in an art deco way, more of a 1930s business plane, whereas the Tiger Moth is open cockpit, a lot more basic and rough and ready derived from a 1920s touring and training plane.

Ant’s Tiger Moth has a ton of nice features built in with a nice startup sequence, different style instrument panels you can switch on the fly and other nice things like that. Plus it just feels really great to fly. It won’t win any speed records but it’s great for sightseeing and touring.

Carenado’s WACO is not technically vintage as it’s a YMF-5 replica of an old F series built by these chaps WACO Classic Aircraft - Wikipedia with a bit of modernisation to it. It’s nice and quite a bit more speedier than the Tiger Moth but the Tiger Moth just feels better to me, more like I’m flying a vintage plane.

100% what Megadyptes said

Ditto on what the others said before me. The Tiger Moth is exquisite. It is by far my favourite plane in this sim or any other, great fun to fly, feels very real as someone else put it. The only other biplanes I tried are the Stearman and the Jenny but neither comes close to the Moth. If you’re looking for a vintage biplane, the Tiger Moth is a very easy and safe recommendation.

Neither the Waco or the Staggerwing are anything like the Tigermoth or each other. The only thing these three aircraft have in common is they are biplanes.

  • WACO - a powerful modern sporty biplane with modern open cockpit based on a WWII design with a few issues, especially in ground handling (though the recent patch helped a lot). Vne is up around 150 knots. The closest other plane to this in sim is probably the faired version of the Stearman. The Stearman is likely a better choice if you are after a sporty biplane (but you do get the vintage cockpit in the Stearman). Alternatively for true aerobatics you would just take out the Pitts.

  • Staggerwing - probably the pinnacle of the Golden Age business touring aircraft, relatively modern closed cockpit with retractable gear, CSU and Vne up around 200 kts . Fast for a biplane. Similar performance to the non-turbo PA28 Arrow. Very much a Tourer.

  • Tiger Moth Oldschool low and slow biplane. Vne is around 140kts but does not have the HP to do serious aerobatics and straight and level cruise settings you are lucky to see more than 80 kts. Similar in game to the Bucker Jungman biplane but more detailed and higher quality. This is a fantastic low and slow sight seeing aircraft. The open cockpit gives good visibility, especially if you fold down the cockpit doors. The biggest appeal of this aircraft is it just “feels right” . Instead of just getting the aircraft to match the “book numbers” and leaving it at that, they have done an amazing job of getting it to feel like it is really flying.

It’s fully aerobatic & if you manage energy right it’s plenty for a quite complex set of maneuvers - it’s got all the lift in the world. You need to be aware of the rather slow roll rate & don’t treat it like a Pitts, but it’s far more than some sort of GA cruiser. It’s just not a specialist aerobatic aircraft, but few things are. It’s quite hard to do it all well, but that’s how the original was designed, it’s a good thing in a trainer.

I was a very big fan of the Waco - the ground handling was much more realistic for a tail dragger (IMO). You really needed to fly it on the ground - including a bit of rudder dance - to tame it. To me, it made it the best biplane in the sim but lots criticised the flight model. (With no evidence) and they got their way. It’s now like all the other biplane options in the sim with the recent flight mod update - once you’ve landed there’s nothing to do…. Very sterile. Too sterile I think. The L19 bird dog isn’t a vintage biplane but will give you a far better feel of a tail dragger flight model. The Waco goes back in the hangar for now. Shame.

The Moth feels great in the air but like the others, feels way too docile once you land…you normally have to fly a tail dragger to a stop…

The Hellcat’s ground modeling is worth a try if you love tail draggers.

An interesting suggestion- I am a tail dragger addict and have learned to tame the fabulous Beech 18 although I shan’t tell you how many hours it took as youl’d be able to work out what a lousy pilot I am…

I have it & haven’t noticed anything new or tricky, honestly. The one ( I think the only MFS taildragger ) I’ve seen people having problems with is the Corsair, but that seems more like there’s a bug in the wheels than anything else.
