I found this thread whilst wondering (in the same way as @BearsAreCool510 ) in what way the sim lacked the ability to simulate supersonic flight. I am fully aware (and I am sure Bears was too) that subsonic and supersonic flight has major differences - I even knew what many of them were.
What I DIDN’T know (and what I was looking for an answer to) was in what ways the sim currently falls short in understanding/modelling these differences - and are some, all, or absolutely none of the supersonic attributes already included/active?
@marsman20208043 gave a succinct and informative answer summing up the main differences (thanks for that) and some others chipped in with valid information - but the answer to the main question - “which (if any) parts of the supersonic flight model can MSFS 2020 already accurately simulate?” - remains unanswered.
There was absolutely NO NEED for the pompous attitude from certain people (I won’t name them, though I do find their use of plural first-person pronouns a little odd!).
The question Bears asked (on more than one occasion) was perfectly reasonable. Posting multiple (admittedly informative) videos, along with patronising and supercilious comments, is NOT helpful.
I suspect only ASOBO and their partners know the real answer but would be grateful if anyone had any insight as to the status of supersonic modelling within the sim?
2**:** having or exhibiting self-importance :ARROGANTa pompous politician
3**:** relating to or suggestive of pomp or splendor :MAGNIFICENT
We’re so happy with definition 3,… Thank you so much !
You’ve probably surmised by our ‘Bears of Little Brain’ title for one another that any understanding regarding what is required to bring Authentic Aeronautical Physics to our Sim of choice is way beyond our collective Abilities of Comprehension.
We might refer you to Abriael who is an Expert with reference to these matters.
Haha, a voice of reason. TBH this thread felt like an open day at the psych ward at the time, I found it more amusing than anything.
Some people are a bit too eccentric for their own good it seems, amusing themselves with mindless drivel that they think is really really funny and oh-so-clever.
Why brother developing fighter jets if Microsoft won’t allow weapons and destruction? This is what DCS is for. Microsoft won’t even allow simulating crashes.
Such a good Point.
As amazing as these incredible War Machines are they’re developed to deliver Death and Destruction as the closing minutes of the B-1 film demonstrates.
ASOBO allows us to appreciate the technical marvels of Military Aircraft and enjoy trying to master them in the Sim sans any ability to mete out simulated Carnage. DCS does this almost perfectly.
MFS2020’s pacific Simulation of Flight is ‘Harmless’ and more relaxing unless of course you’re attempting that dangerous low visibility approach.
The Brilliant German Aeronautical Scientist who gave Concorde her Wings.
Johanna Weber began her research into supersonic transport. In 1955, she showed that a thin delta wing with a high angle of attack could generate sufficient lift to provide the take-off and landing capability, while simultaneously enabling efficient supersonic performance. Küchemann then advocated this wing configuration with the UK Government, resulting in the support for a Mach 2 airliner by the Supersonic Transport Advisory Committee (STAC) in 1956.
In 1961, a prototype aircraft, the Handley Page HP.115, was built to test the low speed performance of the slender delta wing.[2]
Ms Weber made two fundamental contributions to the supersonic effort: tools to predict the drag on a slender delta-winged aircraft during supersonic flight, and shaping the wing to allow the formation of vortices at its leading edge, rather than above or below it. Her work from 1959 onwards contributed to the design and the eventual construction of the Concorde.
This Clever Lady and her Research enabled Concorde to overcome the influence/impediment of atmospheric conditions and continue to accelerate to Her Cruising Altitude without employing After Burners. This is why we tried to get Bears are Cool to consider the inability of MFS2020’s present Weather Engine to replicate these Conditions and were described as Drunken Drivelling Idiots for doing so.
Beloved Co Pilot,… “You forgot Pompous” ! Oh Bless her Cotton Socks,… She’s looking forward to meeting up with our Fellow ‘Magnificent Drunken Drivelling Idiots’ when Lockdown finishes.
ps This Post is to do with Expectations regarding Supersonic Aircraft which will hopefully be Realistically Replicated in our Sim. We’re confident that ASOBO will eventually Up Date MFS2020 and reproduce conditions that are needed for an authentic Supersonic experience.
Anybody who prefers to discuss the technical aspect of the Process to do with these future Up Dates should not look to us for this information.
Beloved Co Pilot. That last bit was a little Pompous !
Thom,… Oh well,… i don’t give TwoShitz !
We just read Jummivana’s Tribute to Michael Collins and this made us appreciate the debt that we owe to these brave Rocket Men.
One day our Great Grand Children will may well remember these Heroes as they gaze back at a Star System that includes our Planet Earth.
ps. Beloved First Officer fell asleep listening to this Documentary. Not because it’s Boring but she said that Maximus’s voice would be excellent for Reading Beddy Byes Stories.
Remembering a time when Britain was losing one Test Pilot every month because of their efforts to Research the Development of Supersonic Aircraft
ps. Beloved Co Pilot was intrigued by the Info regarding The British Government ‘Gifting’ the USSR Rolls Royce Jet engines. This happened not long after the US reneged on an Agreement to exchange Information regarding Supersonic Flight. If this was a Bitter and Twisted act of revenge for the US Researchers ‘Stealing’ the Miles Aircraft Companies All Moving Tail Plane it had terrible consequences. The brilliant MIG 15 with reverse engineered Rolls Royce engines downed many brave US Pilots during the Korean War.
pps. ‘Somethings’ else my fellow Bear of Little Brain noted regarding the Speed of Sound.
At Ground Level it’s 750 mph. At 20,000 ft altitude and above the Speed of Sound reduces to 660 mph. These Conditions can’t be Simulated by our Beloved Sim at present but we look forward to the Up Dates that will allow us to experience them.
Theodore von Kármán. 11 May 1881 – 6 May 1963 was a Hungarian-American mathematician, aerospace engineer, and physicist
He has sometimes been described as one of The Martians.
Theodore’s fame was in the use of mathematical tools to study fluid flow, and the interpretation of those results to guide practical designs. Theodore was also instrumental in recognizing the importance of swept-back wings ubiquitous in modern jet aircraft.
For an aircraft flying higher and higher, the increasingly thin air provides less and less lift, requiring increasingly higher speed to create enough lift to hold the airplane up. It eventually reaches an altitude where it must fly so fast to generate lift that it reaches orbital velocity. The Kármán line is the altitude where the speed necessary to aerodynamically support the airplane’s full weight equals orbital velocity (assuming typical wing loading and lift coefficient for an airplane). In practice, supporting full weight wouldn’t be necessary to maintain altitude because the curvature of the Earth adds centrifugal lift as the airplane reaches orbital speed. However, the Kármán line definition ignores this effect because orbital velocity is implicitly sufficient to maintain any altitude regardless of atmospheric density. The Kármán line is therefore the highest altitude at which orbital speed provides sufficient aerodynamic lift to fly in a straight line that doesn’t follow the curvature of the Earth’s surface.
We’re confident that ASOBO have considered this handsome Hungarian’s work as they Develop the Weather Engine for our beloved Sim.
ps. Theodore and i share the same Birthday.
In future we’ll raise a Glass to this great ‘Martian’ on the 11th May.
Maintained software tends to improve over time. I don’t see this being any different. It’s frustrating at times when things don’t work as they should, but none of that could make me go back to the “legacy” sims.
I don’t own any supersonic capable planes so right now this limitation of the simulator doesn’t affect me directly.
