Stick with i9 14900KF or switch

At least with the separately purchased licence, you’ll be able to transfer it more or less at will. Yes the licence you get with a prebuilt is tied to the mobo, but not the licence you purchase separately.

Well that’s a little lame, they should have fixed that too.

When you build your own, at least you actually own your windows. Sometimes with some people that pre-installed windows is the deciding ‘comfort’ factor as to build or buy ‘custom’. When really it’s all very simple.

I usually build my PCs, and have built more than 20 of them in my time for both work and play, but this time I opted for a pre-built PC specifically to be able to just hand it in if anything should break. Good and bad I guess.

Only if the separate licence is a retail copy. If you try and save a few dollars and get the OEM licence available when you buy your parts it will not be transferable if you make major hardware changes. Always buy a retail licence.

Long-term MS are wanting to move to a monthly subscription model for Windows. They would already have done it but user resistance is huge.

I figured that didn’t need clarification. Buying it through other means can be sketchy at best, and all bets are off then.

No - there are two sorts of genuine Microsoft Windows licences.

  1. A retail licence that can be transferred legally between PCs and allow you to upgrade or even change motherboards.
  2. a cheaper, perfectly genuine Microsoft OEM licence that you can obtain with a major bit of hardware like a motherboard or bare bones PC. This is locked to the original hardware you activate it with.

Both are from Microsoft, both are perfectly legal, but only the full retail licence version can be transferred to other hardware.

This is different to the cheap suspect copies you see on EBAY etc which are usually either:

  1. Keys from a volume licence for a corporate user intended for in house use only, which will work fine most of the time, but are not meant to be sold separately and there is a risk they may be cancelled.
  2. Genuine retail copies obtained by nefarious means. Usually these were bought in bulk legitimately and then resold for less than they actually paid for them. The catch here is the money to purchase the copy is usually laundered from illegal activities such as those scams where people are conned into buying iTunes cards and handing over the digital ID.

back on topic …

Intel are not getting any better on the issue:

Which doesn’t apply to what I said because it’s not a separately purchased licence.

At the moment it’s not recommended to build or purchase a new PC because new AMD processors are expected to be released soon and Intel is currently facing some issues as mentioned earlier.

The issues with crashes to desktop (CTD) potentially caused by Intel’s 13th and 14th generation processors were also mentioned by MSFS CS staff, so I won’t elaborate further.

I have an Intel i9 13900K and I don’t experience any issues with MSFS or other games.
However, currently (04.07.2024) Intel CPUs 13 and 14 gen are not recommended.

Its worth a mention that there isn’t and won’t be a flawless AMD or Intel CPU.

We can conclude the discussion about CPUs reliability as OP has purchased a new PC.

Could you please update us on whether you’ve resolved the issues and how you are finding the new PC setup for playing MSFS?

Just finished re-installing everything, and so far I am not getting the same smooth results I had with the I9. Experiencing a few stutters at airports (Aerosoft) while on the apron. Image in headset can’t keep up if I move my head fast-ish. I need to check my OpenXR settings. I am sure I need to override the Pimax Crystal resolution. At full resolution it is not playable. Most settings are at Medium or Low for VR; PC is set to low end. DX11. DLSS Performance. LOD at 120 at most, usually around 100. Nvidia Driver 552.44. I do not see how I can get noticeable better graphics on the 4070 Super OC. Turning 50 soon. Could wish for a 4090, but then there is the 50XX series lurking around the corner.

I have read a lot of people use Process Lasso to allocate the correct cores, and something about needing to launch MSFS via XBOX game bar to enable the correct cores for gaming. Is this still a thing? No experience with this.

Restart PC and launch msfs.

I’m sorry but I can’t help with that because I have Intel CPU and don’t need to use such tricks to get smooth gameplay. However, there are many forum members with AMD CPUs who will surely be able to assist you with BIOS settings or any issues you’re facing.

What is the problem people are having? I’m running an I9-14900k since March and I hope I don’t jinx myself, but it’s been problem free. What’s going on? Crashing?

Random weirdness that often seems unrelated to CPU like RAM or video errors (but actually are CPU) plus of course crashing, gradually getting worse over time.

Intel has been having issues with stability that leads to CPU damage, and now problems with oxidation inside the CPU due to manufacturing defects. They have been dodgy when asked about it and trying to sweep things under the rug despite extremely high failure rates (especially in server uses). Gamers Nexus has been spearheading the investigations with several recent videos on the subject on YouTube, but other media outlets have also been reporting on the problems.

Every manufacturer is going to have the occasional problem, but it’s how widespread this is and how Intel is handling it that is of concern.

On early 13 gen not 14
That issue was fixed last year.

I recommend starting from the top of this thread. Reading from the beginning will help you understand the context and details provided

good to know,so maybe no new window pc,and no 2024…
thank´s for the hint…

And, then? YingYang-OS, Maharashtra-OS, Prawda-OS?

I avoid any subscription models like vampirs fears garlic and luckily I dont have to subjugate myself to one so far but someday they will force us all like sheep in the slaughterhouse. There is no escape anymore in my opinion. We are trapped.

A friendly reminder:
This topic is about helping @GeirRosset decide which CPU to choose, not about the Windows operating system or its’ licensing choices.

Please stick to the topic at hand.
