There is an open topic for AS, discussion about that 3rd party addon should happen there:
I found an interesting article on the subject of “Clouds don’t suck”. It can be found on the DHV “Deutscher Hängegleiter Verband” website.
Here is the link:
The text is unfortunately in German, I can’t click on the text in my browser to translate it. If you are interested, you can perhaps try OCR text recognition. With MS Word it only works partially. But I think it’s worth it.

While the visual stuff is getting a lot of attention for MSFS 2024,
this topic seems dead, at least I couldn’t hear any mentioning of airflow improvements or reworks.
I can’t even find an answer if Active Sky has better thermals for soaring.
Is anyone even soaring anymore? I never see any glider screenshots anywhere.
I have over 700h on the discus. I think it’s 98% gliding of all flights. In all the time I met two or three other gliders. So indeed very rare.
Today I had a flight 2,5h in the Andes. Startet in a hight of about 3900m total height 6800m.
Very impressive and exciting. Of course you have to try to find the best path for the route, but that’s why you have to study the landscape intensively and then memorise it well as you fly slowly over it
Love it ![]()

There is Sim Soaring Club on Discord with 1800+ people and they fly a lot tasks twice a week. Search ![]()
link to join that soaring club?
Here you have a topic with link:
The fact that they picked up a few guys from the glider community for MSFS 2024 gives me hope that they will improve the thermals and drafts as well.
That would be great! Although there are more indications they will first make sure that the ground steering is correct depending on the grass species and color.
Thats a bit unfair, they can’t just put 200 coders working on thermals, that would be total chaos
I’m at 90-95% flying gliders. Exactly the Discus FES. What’s the situation for me:
I’m not satisfied at all. How can it be. Of course I am missing certain things that have been discussed here a thousand times. But we all know Jörg did say to make the best Flight simulator in the world. And he also said this not only in GA but also in Helicopters, Gliding and what else can go up to the sky. A few days on the expo he told how he likes helicopter and gliding. And my opinion is,
I believe to his words
and what he said.
But this game is the most complex one I’ve ever seen in my 61years of live. All the Realtime data and the functionality which have to fit together.
And things not working in 2020 will be better in 2024, or perhaps 2028. What ever. The flight simulator will be improved more and more. This forum and all the other Plattforms are great to talk to the Developers and those who are responsible. So Jörg, Sebastian and all the others are doing a very good job in this ‘puplic work’.
So what will I do in this situation:
Calm down and be patient.
Yesterday I had a good and also exciting flight in Southern France, real weather, until the sunset, great light in the scenery, spectacular landing on a very little mountain airfield.
And it was so relaxing and the best to end up the day.

See you in the sky.

Yeah, heli flights and glider soaring are the best things to do in the air ![]()
I came to MSFS a year ago after 47 years of gliding due to ill health with the hope of being able to recreate my favourite soaring flights from yesteryear. However, I was very disappointed to find out that the thermal implementation is very poor with no strong central core and sink around the sides as in real life, so cross-country soaring flights can be frustrating, and ridge soaring is a better bet.
It maybe that Asobo would be better off introducing a gliding expansion to MSFS 2024 so that they can turn off the weather system and implement a simpler soaring atmosphere to free up CPU power. A simplified version of the Regional Atmospheric Soaring prediction maps created by Dr John Glendening and available through rasp.stratus.org.uk could then use the freed up CPU power to create thermals based on a variety of preset weather maps. RASP has been used throughout the world for many years by gliding clubs to predict soaring weather, so we know that it works.
I look forward to reliving memorable soaring flights with great scenery in 2024 like the one below sometime in the future. Fortunately, the altercation with a Cape Vulture was a very near miss and I enjoyed sharing many thermals with Vultures, Eagles and Buzzards over the years.
is it any better in 2024
Nope. And probably never will be.
Statements like ‘‘we gonna be better than Condor’’ aged like milk.
They gonna be busy for at least a year fixing the basegame before they can even think about any feature improvements / implementations.
Lightning has returned as of today’s update, so there’s attention being paid and progress being made.
