Having second thoughts now after hearing about glare issues and lack of ventilation. Glare is the big reason I want to ditch the G2 as it makes flying at night unpleasant.
I’ve come to like having an open bottom on the G2.
Yeah I canceled my pre-order recently because I got a good-as-new Aero for pretty cheap. Canceled mainly due to glare, low brightness, and not the best e2e clarity.
It’s a shame as I was really looking forward to running 75fps at 75hz. But overall it’s hard to justify the high price (1500 Inc. audio) in EU when you consider you can’t return it and it has limited resale value.
I’m sure it’s still a good HMD overall though. Hopefully the second one will solve some of the issues.
I think they made compromises for a small form factor. I hope they come out with a revision some day that has some open ventilation and no glare issues.
I just realized the Big Screen Beyond has fixed IPD, so you may be unable to share it with four family/friends even for a casual gaming.
So it’s not only personalized face gasket but also fixed IPD.
When it comes to the weight, you must also add the weight of the headphones and the inconvenience of donning the hardest first and the headphones later. No big factor if you like in-ear headphones, but more difficult if you opt for something bigger with a boom mike for VATSIM.
The do have an audio solution that is coming out Q4 that will replace the headstrap.
I myself have decided to buy SteamVR controllers and a base station. Then I will get the Beyond for night flying in MSFS and all flying in DCS. I want the OLED blacks, and bulky headsets you always feel the weight of the headset moving your head around fast, which is what you do frequently in DCS. The for normal flights in MSFS, I will get a Varjo Aero. The Aero has the inner cooling allowing for long bush trips without having to take the headset off to cool down. The fact that Varjo has cut the price by half means I can get both headsets for the same price as I would have paid for just the Aero previously.
Both headsets have areas where they shine. Making use of both headsets with their distinct use cases is best for me until Varjo comes out with another Aero like headset that makes use of OLED screens.
Anyone got any new reviews or opinions after buying and using Big Screen Byond in MSFS?
I love my Aero but it is starting to act up on me, today it seemed like I could not get it to stay connected for a while, then finally got a good connection and flew for about 3 hours total today.
So, it has me pondering what I will get to replace it, fearing the day may come soon when my Aero just won’t work.
The Aero comfort has been ok, but not great, always makes my head itch above my forehead.
Really would like to have a smaller form factor, so considering the BSB, the Crystal seems like giant scuba gear that I would not want to wear.
Edit: oh, I guess they don’t start shipping until January 2024, no wonder there are not more reviews yet.
Still no way I’ll be ordering a BSB headset for msfs (or for anything PCVR). I already have a +4yo Vive Pro1 with amoled screens, Etsy Gear VR lens mod, Index controllers, and 2x2.0 base stations. I already know how good oled is with msfs (esp. night flying) and thanks to my 4090 I can super sample the heck out of it. But, even then, the SDE and cockpit clarity are both not as good as I’d like.
While the BSB form factor looks great, I’d much rather have a bit larger one with adjustable IPD and a facial interface that is glasses friendly. Also, in-built audio, even Quest headstrap style.
I’m still kinda hoping for a Vive Pro 3 with pancake lens and higher res micro-oled’s but this may be wishful thinking, lol! Maybe Valve will surprise us with something soon. Who knows?
For my first VR goggles I have the Quest 3 and I am quite happy actually.
And although I am usually against WiFi, I like the WiFi in the Quest 3. if you have a WiFi 6E router and a beefy PC (4090), this is really working well. And that way I can keep my triple monitor setup for sim racing. I read that Pimax also wanted to offer a WiFi module.
What I however would love to get compared to the Quest 3:
more clarity: Aero, BB, Pimax
oled: BB
Much wider FOV, vertically is ok but horizontally is just not enough: only Pimax has a larger hFOV but also far from 160 degrees.
So the BB would not work for me.
Hopefully Varjo will unveil something WOW on Nov. 27th.
What are the BSB downsides? The obvious is it’s custom to one person.
VR Flight Sim Guy seems to really gush over it with the exception of some sort of glare. Which may or may not have been addressed?
The small, fitted for factor to me is what is most appealing. One annoyance I’ve had with most headsets is the ability to look up or down without things sliding around.
