Update: Savage Carbon - STOL Realism Mod (v2.10 / Dec 27, 2022)

Olive Green it is then. Good idea about the flap deployment rate. Was my last resort, as I want you to be able to “pump the flaps” for STOL takeoff. Fortunately I found a solution, all is working as it should in the coming update v1.0.4.

Thanks for liking this bird so much, and for the encouragement guys. Keeps me going, and the surprises coming. Like this one…D-Day livery for the RAF. Why not? Already had the stripes.

I realized when doing historic liveries I need to research the authentic colors and roundels used around D-Day, but I think I got them right now for both the USAF and the RAF. Any historians out there…please correct me if I get anything wrong. Also added the correct bottom colors for both.

I couldn’t wait. I took a short hop taking off from Omaha Beach (in a T-storm)and took a quick spin around the area and landed in a farm field, The flap corrections worked great although I did have some difficulty cutting spoeed before deploying Flaps 1. At about 49 kts I went to Flaps 2 and cut throttle before touching down in the pasture. Wish I could say it was a soft landing but only two small bounces and a short roll ended by a tap on the toe brakes. Looking forward to more flights when I have more time.

Great work! Thank you so much.

I’m not an expert on utility planes in the RAF in 1944, but, I’m pretty sure the underside of the fighters was an eggshell, or sky blue. here is a pic of the Roseland Spitfire, which was flown by the grandfather of some friends of mine

Interesting your note about STOL in next update. I watched a you tube vid re a real Carbon Cub SS and it took off with 3 flap notches, full throttle, 1000, 2000, airborne! The guy had screen avionics in it as well!
I love this mod you have so skillfully created and have flown it exclusively the last week, I’m a relative novice but after practising, joined the Alaska Bush Group and have flown in a couple of multiplayer flights which I’d not had confidence to do before. Had a great time in the Carbon and it handled fantastically with incredible climb rates over the mountains east of Valdez, which impressed the other 5 guys. Flew well in the snow but the wind was a challenge but that’s the trade off with the lightweight frame.
Brilliant aeroplane thankyou. Would love floats but that’s another ball game I guess.

There’s a little hop up with each flap deployment near the touchdown point, which can be problematic but helpful when I get the nose down too much - saves a nose topple :+1:

Thanks for the RAF version, looks great.

Here’s a screengrab for the British roundels… no gold outer circle on the underwing, only on the upper wing and some fuselage markings.

Looks absolutely fabulous by the way… great job!

Just wanted to drop by and say that after being amazed by the Vl-3 mod I’ve been using since its beginning I’m now in love with your Savage Carbon mod !

Loved the Savage when FS2020 dropped but it’s quite slow to be able to cover distance but now with this mod…wow…a lot of fun ahead !

Btw nice touch for the “Tips” while waiting in the loading screen =)

Awesome job as always !

Thanks guys, and noted on all your feedback, especially the latest RAF addition. My bad on the roundel on the bottom of the wing @Seven7Tango …the yellow outer circle is added only to provide contrast on darker camouflage colors. Should indeed not be there on the bottom then. Will fix that!

Bottom color…there were a few used I think, noted on the eggshell blue-ish color as well. Gonna check that out. Looks awesome by the way @ShyMarigold6247, cool photos!

Update: found the correct RAF WWII colors, need to scroll to the “Day Fighter Scheme (1941-45)” section (apparently I was using the 1938-1940 colors…not correct for D-Day of course). Perfect match to your photos. May need to try the yellow leading edges as well. Suppose this makes it harder to detect the plane when it’s coming straight for you…but need to research that.

Fantastic work! Love it. Glad to see the military liveries, and the move toward realistic performance.

Would like to provide some monetary compensation for your efforts. Do you have a contribution method?

So maybe you could do as the Bush League Legends have done with the XCub and provided two different models that you can choose to install, either the Stock 180 Hp realistic performance or the more powerful 210Hp version for those who want a little crazy in their “Fantasy” flying. That way there is something for everyone. Actually, I think it was more fun to learn how to work the CFG files and make your own beast, but not everyone can or wants too.

Thanks @anon99207371. Gonne be more realistic with each iteration, that’s for sure. There are currently two real-life pilots (with extensive experience on similar planes) involved in the Beta testing process, so expect realism to go up a notch (or 2) in v1.0.4.

The mod is free of course (and will remain so, plus the 3D and Sound is from Asobo, I take no credits for that), but yes it’s still a lot of work with the flight model design, research, testing, liveries, communications, etc. Will setup some form of monetary contribution channel as some have been asking. And who knows…I will be able to spend even more time doing this eventually.

Thanks for the idea on different editions (2 different engines for example). It is a lot of work though (it goes far far beyond setting an “HP” setting to a different number), so may want to play with this thought once the flight model has reached a higher level of maturity. Keeping it in mind!

Researched the “yellow leading edges” on RAF WW2 planes. Found this:

“The yellow line on the leading edge of the wings is easy to see and one pilot remarked that, on seeing an aircraft in his mirror behind him at some distance, one glance was sufficient to enable him to identify it as one of ours.”

So the yellow edges are for ID purposes. Just so we know. Adding them to the livery for the RAF.

And…done. Yellow leading edges, bottom roundels without yellow outline, and new colors for bottom and main camo according to the liveries used at D-Day.
