Does anyone have a good MSFS 24 binding video they know of please? Got the basics done but soo many switches and buttons it would be helpful to know how others have bound these.
Watch some YouTube videos. Start with an easy simple plane you like along the lines of the Cessna 172. Build just one profile with all the buttons and switches you want to use.
Then find a more complex 2 engine aircraft, duplicate (copy) the Cessna 172 profile, add more buttons and switches for the 2 engine one, save and rename. Then you can use this more complex one as the basis for an even more complex aircraft - until you are built up all the way. Best thing is as you go this route you will learn the name for the control in game, how it works with other controls and finally how they work on the plane.
Nothing in life that is truly satisfying comes without work and understanding. Be good to yourself and do it your way - you will find you like your controls better because they are setup the way you think.
If you want really fine control, look into Axis and Ohs or Spad.next. Either way LOTS of YouTube Videos to help.
Not for helis but I can tell you how I did it.
The VPC software is honestly not complex at all, just looks intimidating, but every axis is an axis, every button state is a button and you can map out everything to anything.
I would start in-sim with one by one, “what do i need?” and map that.
If you have lots of buttons (like I do on the throttle) you might be tempted to map out many more buttons, but don’t. Some are best left to click or on the keyboard, for example - it’s all about ergonomics.
So just keep going with “what do I need next?” and figure out if you want to map it out or not.
For planes, I have the following mapped to the joystick and throttle:
- Throttle axis
- Reversers
- Speedbrake
- Flaps
- Gear toggle
- Parking brake toggle
- Parking brake on joystick pinky axis
- Autothrottle engage
- A/T disengage
- A/T TOGA
- Roll/Yaw/Pitch on stick axis
- Trim
- Camera look around
- Autopilot On
- Autopilot disengage
- BATC on-top button
- Headtracking center and on/off for Open Track
… that’s about it.
And the first day I made the mistake of starting from the menu and finding anything remotely useful to be on the HOTAS and map it out, but when I had to re-do it for msfs2024, i just went by “what do i need?” and got it configured in like 10 minutes. So, do that instead of learning other’s bindings.
Brilliant, thanks for the advice. I will have a go at that. I think one of the problems for a heli newbie is you are not familiar with heli terminology or what is essential to bind (apart from the obvious forwards, sideways, up, down etc) for stable heli control. So thanks. I also note you use a headtracker, which do you think is best with virpil?
To add Helicopters don’t have that much to bind vs an aircraft, so fairly easy. I used to use Tobi and that worked great on a 65" TV, but nothing compares to VR for helicopter flying. The 3D depth perception changes everything. Add a Buttkicker or HF8 and you got pretty ■■■■ good immersion.
Yes, I have been reading that this is the best experience with VR for heli flying. I want to upgrade to this eventually but have to save up for it as folk are suggesting you need a high end PC to do this. So if I need all that, haptic additions will need to wait.
I can see the attraction for immersive experience but the VR is the first upgrade after the better PC.
I do wonder which VR goggles are best for 2024 though, every forum I read on VR for heli’s swings me this way and that and in the end you don’t know which one to buy? Many of the forums are pointed at 2020, so the info is out of date.
Quest 3 is the best value - when you are ready to buy there will be lots of choices. It only gets better - I started flying on a PC when the game was in 64 colors…
Aah, you are super experienced and lucky to have been able to do it for so long. Definitely a journey worth having I have discovered.
Yes it is all of those choices that are daunting to know which is best for a certain rig. Also I wear glasses so they will need to be able to fit. But hey that’s a journey I will face at the time. I feel that after careful consideration of the controls I made a good choice so hopefully I will do the same next time. Thanks for all of your support.
