A lot of really great suggestions and info thanks! I decided going for the meta quest 3. The Crystal light is probably good but its missing a lot of features im interesteded in like the hand tracking etc.
I am brand new to VR and look forward to using it for more then just flight simulators although that will be the main use. It seems a fair comprimies with price vs features for a first time user.
So far i have used a pair of VR glasses for the phone, that i connected to the pc via a program and managed to use it in flight sim. Its works like a VR headset but the clarity is not good and performance is bad but it gives a good idea of what VR flying is like. Cant wait!!
How is my explaining that Iām waiting for VR headset technolgy to evolve NOT relevant?
You want me to recommend only existing headsets? I canāt - at least not based on my interpretation of where the technology needs to be.
In other words, the question was for recommendations. I made one: Wait.
Your personal opinion on the current state of VR tech and how its all bad is not helpfull for somone looking for recomendations on what to buy. Furthermore your hardware setup is also not relevant to what i was asking.
Im sure theres plenty of other topics to discuss that. But i found what i was looking for
I had the HP G2 and tried the MetaQuest3, the Vive Pro, and the Pimax Crystal Light. Ended up with the Crystal Light. It is a tethered headset but works great, with sharp optics. My advice is to try different headsets through Amazon and return them if you donāt like, thatās what I did.
Actually you dont need the cable if you have a strong wifi signal. You have to order the cable separately, they sell on amazon for ā¬30
But if you have good wifi you dont need it
And the cable restricts your movements. You have those headbands with a batterypack attached to it. I would strongly recommend this because this battery acts like a counterweight wich makes wearing the quest 3 a lot more comfortable.
Sorry my opinion wasnāt helpful. Iām glad you got one that will hopefully make you happy with your specific setup.
i have a quest3 with original link cable and its very nice.
get a headset which many people use, so msfs has to support it. dont get a niche producht nobody supports.
Agree with you entirely on this - so far it just hasnāt been possible to use a headset and natively see and interact with all your flight controls.
Apologists will say it just takes āmuscle memoryā and a bit of practice, but itās nonsense and not remotely good enough to satisfy the ideal visual setup of sky, wings, gauges + your controls that you describe. Iām happy enough with the improved immersion and lesser compromises I get with the tobii 5, at least until there is a real improvement in the visuals and functionality of augmented reality.
Since youāre already in the US, if you were to make the trip to Rhode Island for FSExpo 25 then I (and probably many others) would be very interested to read your views on how things are advancing in this field.
I appreciate it would be long journey, but easier than for those of us elsewhere in the world at the moment, and Iād love to see a real MSFS enthusiastās write-up of the event and the exhibits. Looks like there are a good number of speakers and exhibitors related to the VR / AI products that weāre interested in here. Unfortunately I have already missed Flight Sim Weekend in the Netherlands this year, which is the only similar show in Europe.
If I go I will be a roving reporter, for sure!
If you get something like the bobo headstrap (much more comfortable) along with a spare battery you can go all day and hot swap batteries.
I would also throw out a shout for the Quest Pro. On paper, ⦠it seems like the Quest Pro is outdated with a lower resolution. In real life though, it does very well. It also has true eye-tracking and works fine wired or wirelessly with foveated rendering on. You can also download custom hand tracking packages from Github to increase its capabilities. It is the first VR headset I have used where the hand tracking is so good that I can flip switches or turn small dials with no additional items.
I would be careful to raise the expectations that far. Plenty of people, like me, only use VR a minority of the time and some quit it all together. I have to be in the perfect mood and have plenty of spare energy to enjoy VR, otherwise it kills any joy for flying I had for the day.
VR is clunky, visuals lacking compared to 2D and takes a lot more energy (brain power) to use. Having something stuck to your face is rarely a positive either. All this for what some praise as perfect immersion, immersion that not everyone feels. Iāve for one never felt a any kind of vertigo or reflexive ducking for something flying at you in VR, people are different.
Hi,
you touched a point I was wondering other day. Monitor vs VR Headset visuals.
What are the differences between the too in terms of technologies? Why Monitor looks better than VR Headset?
Do you know it?
I use VR, and I preffer it, but yes I understand why some people still choose to use a Monitor.
I would imagine itās mainly about resolution. That ānativeā 4k monitor resolution is much higher than most headsets can manage (per eye), plus your eyes are literally right against the screen so the pixel density needs to be much higher to minimise everything looking blocky. But a higher pixel density requires higher resolution, and so on. Then youāve also got to render everything twice. Itās a huge challenge.
Other things that donāt help (that Iāve noticed) is the over-exposure of the sky that only seems to happen in VR and much more noticeable aliasing, especially on the glass panels. Again, it could be a side effect of limited resolution.
Hopefully itāll only get better, but Asobo really needs to take it seriously too and optimise the game way more than it currently is.
And every ācheatā you do with graphics and design that looks amazing on flat screen tends to look awful in VR. Just look at tree canopies as an example.
Yes. Trees are a good example. They look like different technology.
Can anyone comment on their experience with Quest 3, particularly with a MS2024 and a 3080. Is there a screendoor effect and would performance be acceptable?
I had the infamous HP Reverb and since it is now dead, Iāve been using a headtracker. But like itās been mentioned time and again, once you experience VR, there really is no going back.
I have a 3060 Ti and replaced my Reverb with a Quest 3. I see no screen door effect in either 2020 or 2024. You should be good.
I have the Pimax Crystal Light ⦠and also a 4k 3 monitor setup. I prefer VR when flying helicopters ⦠and monitors when Iām in Fixed Wing flying instruments cause I can also access LittleNavMap, MS Flight planner, the web, etc while flying ⦠if Iām flying low down in say a twin Otter on floats then VR is cool then too. Really itās just a matter of personal choice.
Iāve had both the Q3 and PCL ⦠prefer the PCL, visuals are clearer and less software to manage
