Wake Turbulence has little to no effect

Latest BETA 1.4.16.0 check - still pretty much the same. In most cases NO EFFECT at all. In a very few cases, when A/C near the runway, some slight turbulence, but nowhere near realistic as it should be for a C172 near a heavy airliner.
Tested also in pure vanilla MSFS, no community, real-time traffic and G1000 C172.
Here is another clip of one of the tests…head-on traffic, same results as the other tests I’ve done.

Feels to me that this is unlikely going to be fixed for SU2…if at all…

Thanks, that’s unfortunately my feelings too… my rants fumed in MSFS2020 SU4 when they obliterated wind gusts. It took 5 sim updates (!) after endless posts and QA questions to get some explanations and finally some partially and still not good enough implementation of wind gusts. Not to mention of course the other weather and flight dynamic features and bugs that are still pending as ever… that gaps that really makes the different between gamified sim and a truly realistic simulator.
My last drop of enthusiasm causes me to post here and there but the truth is as I wrote before, the forums are really kinder garden playground for us… this is not a real communication channel, not a bi-directional one…so, we can write as much as we want but we’ll never really know what they read, think or plan to do about those issues… sad…

Still not working in SU3… but I think I’ve found two scenarios.

  • Wake aircraft on the ground - there are some wake turbulence, though not very severe in my testing so far but there is some impact on the following aircraft.
  • Wake aircraft is mid-air flying - nothing much happening…

This was reproducible and done several more tests, here are just two more examples with vanilla sim, no addons.

There shouldn’t be any wake turbulence in your first video though. Wake turbulence starts when the nose gear leaves the ground during take-off, until nose gear on ground after landing. On ground there shouldn’t be any wake turbulence.

yeah, by itself wrong but I’m pretty that at this point they aimed for simplified implementation that is unlikely to be very realistic in terms of what AOA and ground clearance the wing has to generate wakes. It’s also very evident that the wake stops under certain speed, again to simplify implementation. I’m betting it’s a factor of weight + speed at this point.
Whatever it is, it’s a quasi jet blast more than a wake turbulence, and even that , just on the ground…at least with aircraft. I do recall that seb demonstrated that with an heli in front of his aircraft though.

Which default aircraft have proper wake turbulence?, to test in online, I have been with the F-18/A10 behind default online A330-737-A320 users, and close to the rear engines in cruise etc., and nothing. I have activated the wake view, and almost they didn´t have nothing and all the lines were green, so this it is not well implemented yet, it is like nothing by now, would be funny in the future.

I wouldn’t be surprise if it’s a combination of bugs here… conditions, aircraft, multiplayer vs AI traffic etc…
So far I’ve tested “Real-time Traffic” and VATSIM injected traffic. The only case when something happened is as noted, “Real-time Traffic” when the traffic is touching the ground… and even this wasn’t very consistent for me.

Still the same in SU3 Beta 1.5.8.0… wake turbulence too weak. No addons, live traffic.

I was with the Orion Gyrocopter a week ago and the wake turbulence of some online default airline aircraft taking off, and I have Ultra in that setting, throw me a pair of times to the runway tarmac haha, and with other default WWII aircraft in the air, I don´t remember the name, in one approach I remember an effect behind a default C-17 in online some month ago.

After the Orion I went again with the F-18 at cruise level behind the engines of some airliners and nothing, and my F-18 engines didn’t nothing to the airliners, a pity haha, a bit of turbulence would be funny hahaha

So apparently it is there already, I am in SU2, maybe only near to the ground?, and some aircraft yes and another no?, or too much attenuated effect in their flight model by the moment emitting and receiving the turbulence?, or the other online users had wake turbulence deactivated in settings?.

Sim Update 4 Beta | MSFS 2024

Still feels the same in SU4 beta 1, little to no effect.

Tested with live and AI traffic, with TBM 850 and Cessna G1000.

On SU3 career mode I was short final 1 or 2 nm behind a heavy liner and almost crashed because of the wake turbulence, I managed to land just after he left the runway, that’ looked accurate for me.

I forgot this functionnality it was a good reminder :sweat_smile:

Same, I tried it in both the default 152 and the Aerolite 103, following 737’s and Airbuses going in and out of KSAN, and little or nothing felt, even though I saw plenty of lines in the visualization. If even other airliners have to watch out for wake turbulence from each other, then it should be very obvious and deadly for a smaller plane.

Continuing the discussion from Wake Turbulence has little to no effect:

Flew the wonderful new Aeroprakt A-32 Vixxen from Got Friends straight through the visualized wake turbulence of a few airliners (default live AI traffic with FSLTL models, arriving A321 and a departing 737-800) and had absolutely no impact on my flight whatsoever. Considering the weight of the Vixxen is a tiny 1,300lbs fully loaded I assume it should have been thrown around like kids not-quite-properly-restrained in a carnival Scrambler - but it was as smooth as butter.

Yep, not seeing any change whatsoever in SU4, despite it being one of the patch notes.

Wake turbulence should have effect also at high altitude and not only close to the ground, it is no possible that you put your plane close to the turbine exhaust of an airliner e.g. in cruise, and there isn´t nothing there.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say there is zero effect.

I spawned at EGLL, and took off in a 172. I then used slew mode to position myself behind airliners taking off. When you are close to the aircraft you can see the dynamic camera getting bumped around, but hardly uncontrollable. When the airliner, in this case a 777, the bouncing of the camera subsides.

It’s very marginal at best, but not zero. I’ll see if I can record some footage of the effect. I have weather set to Clear Skies, to eliminate as much as possible, any external effects.

The effect kicks in at around 12-13 seconds. You will see some bouncing of the camera, and some mild rolls to the left, and right, and this subsides around 25 seconds in I think.

First it rolled me to the left, then to the right. I know I can view the CFD visualisation, but I think there is another effect in the SDK you can enable to see more than that. I’d need to re-test if I can find that as I want to see the disturbed air behind the plane in front.

I repeated this with CFD visualistation enabled. The graphical effect is very minimal. For the most part you still see this.

What you do see is subtle fluctuations on those lines, but as they are updating so fast it isn’t very noticeable. If the effect was set to a digital 1, turning this up to 10 would help.

You can enabled Wake Turbulence visualisation as well.

The effects are there, just very muted.

What I found fascinating about this was not only watching the wake turbulence dissipate over time, as you can see by the very first green lines slowly disappearing, but how the size of the turbulent wind varies from plane to plane. Here you will see VIR103 causing a much larger pattern than the earlier two planes. The engines output actually changes this, which is really cool.

“Very muted” = non existent. I’ve tried, GA and helos behind AI and a friends various aircraft and there is zero effect, no minor bumping even. The visual aid certainly shows wake turbulence, so I’m sure to be hitting it right up to the tail cone of aircraft.

As my video showed there is an effect. It is not zero. But it is hardly energetic. It feels more like mechanical turbulence from terrain below than from a jet at takeoff power.

Another one I wanted to try today was to fly through the wake at right angles to it. It’s also possible that some planes “feel” it more than others. I was using the default 172, which has CFD enabled. Perhaps planes without CFD are unaffected by the wake. Just a thought…

Flying through the wake at right angles to it was just as uneventful. The plane moved up, and down a bit, but it only lasted a few seconds.
