What can make flight sim more immersive?

That’s the biggest reason why I don’t like VR.

To make it more immersive I would add flight attendant and passengers management, Realistic crash modeling, 1st & 2nd person avatars to do preflight visit (and repairs?) or walk through airports facilities, add ia passengers and operators in airports, add wildlife all over the world, add trains, gliders and paragliders in relevant areas…
I know many of these already exist thanks to add-ons, but could be improved.

Why would you remove contact lenses? No wonder it doesn’t look sharp.

I gave up VR headset because poor FOV , LOD and colors. The best option for me is a triple screen 27" setup (1440p + 60 Hz). If you have money and space , triple 32 ". I have 2080 Ti overcloked + 32 Go RAM + I9 10900 KF

I’ve owned a VR headset for about 4 years now (OG Vive + Valve Index controllers). I’ll hands down agree that when it comes to visual immersion, there are no VR experiences more immersive than flying or driving.

However… I can’t play MSFS in VR

  • Nothing breaks the immersion more for me than having to use a mouse to control the cockpit. And using VR controllers to do so is equally awkward and immersion breaking.

  • Resolution in VR (with MSFS) is terrible

  • All my other VR experiences are 90 fps or more. MSFS is lucky to hit 30 fps with potato settings. It makes me queasy and gives me a headache after just a few minutes.

I’ve got some pretty steady VR legs after this time. I can spend hours in VR with experiences that many people find nausea-inducing without issue. First person games like Boneworks or Half-Life: Alyx, fast-moving space flying like EndSpace and EverSpace. Flight games / sim like VTOL VR, UltraWings and AeroflyFS. I never have an issue with any. They run at high, buttery smooth frame rates.

MSFS running at 30 fps makes me want to hurl after about 5 minutes.

To me, a 50" TV, TrackIR, touch monitors running Air Manager, and 2 Knobsters give me an immersive (enough) mouse and keyboard-free cockpit experience. The only way it will get better is once I build my more permanent setup that will have 3 50" TVs.

What did it for me was;

Ultrawide monitor (34)
Buttkicker.
Trackir
And real metal flight controls, TM warthog hotas and TPR rudder pedals.

Very expensive, i know, but it’ll last a lifetime if you ask me….

The resolution in VR for MSFS is terrible regardless of using contact lenses. It doesn’t compare to 4K or even 1440p for that matter.

Does anyone know if it would be possible to add 2 side monitors 16:9 against an ultrawide 21:9?

Reason is that I already have a 21:9 monitor and due to their size I don’t want another 2 either side. Ideally I would like 2 small 24” monitors alongside my 34” ultrawide.

I’m not sure if the different aspect ratio would cause issues. I’m not too bothered about the image lining up completely as I plan to have them at a 90 degree angle compared to the main forward monitor.

As long as the side screens have the same vertical resolution and physical height (for example, a 34" UWQHD 3440x1440 with a pair of 27" 2560 x 1440), it should work just fine.

  1. By adding a setting where they could scan the in game aircraft model to 3d printers so you could have a 3d printed model of the in game aircraft

  2. add a cool regional jet like the DO328 jet to balance the atr

I was hoping to run the side monitors in 1080p to avoid a big performance hit.

You can do that as well to lessen the performance load. Most important is the physical size so the image flows well from the main monitor to the side ones.

I once built a full size B7373 800 NG cockpit with 2 Buttkickers mainly to feel vibration at touch down. The sim chassis consisted of kinetic insulators that could carry the weight of the sim and pilot(s). Without kinetec insulators buttkickers will do nothing! Although it was a great project, I decided to sell the sim because I wanted to fly different planes in VR. So I built a new universal sim consisting of four D-BOX actuators which can do motion and vibration (tectile), and hardware for the main controls and a good pilot seat of course. I can still fly in 2D, but the Varjo Aero is much more immersive! The combination of VR and tectile and 4 DOF motion is really overwhelming!

Motion sickness will gradually decrease but you definetely need a high-end PC: GPU and CPU!

The initial motion sickness does go away unless it’s from bad frame rates.

A popular complaint seems to be the part about getting blinded to the world. But that is immersion!

Something to do would be nice. A raison d’être more than just point A -point B would really spice things up

Back in FS9 / FSX days, we have plenty of add-ons that give people some non-flying activities during the cruise (as if flying is not a daunting task already).

The silliest one is probably an in-game video player that is able to play all kinds of video format. So you can switch to cabin view and relax there while pretending to watch movie during the flight. We also have “web browser” so you don’t have to “alt + tab” if you don’t have multi monitor to spend sometime while the VNAV/LNAV functions do its job.

Yes, I have speakers for noise, headset for comms. Works well for me.

Maybe get the wife to dress up as a stewardess /flight attendant
and serve you drinks and packaged meals :joy::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
She can also do the pre-flight checklist
