What is the best Intel CPU for MSFS?

Yes in the PMDG I’m limited by main thread so that’s why I was wondering about getting a 12700k but as the other poster said it might make my fps go up but that’s about it so I will hold off for now , the only thing is my mobo is kinda ■■■■ in the sense I have 3 nvme in my machine but only two slots so I have my c drive in a pice 4 slot nvme adapter
I don’t have any SATA drives in use
Thought going up to a z690 would make a difference to my pcie lane on my RTX which gives me 8gts on my z490 but I’ve read using 16gts without the other slot in use doesn’t make much difference.
Would appreciate your thoughts
On Amazon a z690 board and 12700k is just over £500 so shall I save it or go for it bearing in mind I think I know the answer already judging by your well respected replies

Oh just to add my 10700k is overclocked to 4.9ghz and my RTX 3080 is undervolted by 150mhz

DLSS 2 as it stands is of little benefit to high end (3080/90) gpus unless maybe VR or multimonitor. Those with weaker cards should benefit most but quite how much is very much relative to their cpu.

I’m not sure of the clockability of the 12700, if it’s bad you might not see much difference. Also unless you are or plan to record in 4k those PCIe3 lanes shouldn’t be a problem and I doubt they would cost you more than a frame or two (and maybe the odd scenery stutter). Don’t forget it’s actually possible to play using just a HDD (horrendous I’m sure).

I have a 10700 and, more for curiosity, have been looking at 12th and 13th gen options. I’m not going to upgrade any time soon, so this was simply an academic exercise, but look at the i5-13600K w/ the Z690 as well. For MSFS, lacking those two extra P-Cores compared to the 12700K but gaining the single core performance and increased clock speeds of the 13th gen might be a better option.

Yes I looked at that too but I have a tower cooling , not keen on AIO and have heard the 12900 series and 13th gen CPU’s run very hot so I don’t fancy going down that road at the moment , what with ddr 5 as well I may just hold off and see how things progress with msfs utilisation until I push the button and go for the nuclear option by getting something like a z790 and a 13th gen cpu

Just an FYI since you mentioned you were looking at the 12700K, from what I’ve seen with online reviews and testing, the 13600K is almost identical from a power standpoint. Tower cooling might still be fine.

… and you have tower cooling and Tower Cooling

My i7-10700k OC 5Ghz is possible thanks to the “Assassin III Gamerstorm” dual fan. Relatively cheap (got it at 65€) and performing really great, if you have the room for it (big one). I don’t do water inside a PC case

Yes I have the arctic 34 esports duo in a push pull fan configuration with two fans either side of the heat sink
It’s an older but still good tower cooler
According to reviews it’s good enough to cool a 12700k even with a mild overclock
My 10700k gets barely above 50 degrees C
But that’s fans 100% but it’s not loud whilst using msfs
I have a LGA1700 conversion kit for a 12th gen cpu but would need a new mobo too
So will have to think about an upgrade or whether I should wait
I’m just not sure as I only use msfs , no other gaming so not sure it’s worth the money

So my question to fellow simmers on this thread
Do you think it’s worth getting a 12700k plus a z690 mobo , I can get both for just over £500

I have 32gb of ram 3600mhz too as part of my current rig
Just not sure it’s worth it for msfs , don’t want to upgrade for the sake of it …….what’s your thoughts please ?

Very hot? Nope if you know smth about BIOS settings

MSFS ultra settings 2k.

Wow that’s very cool, you must have a great cooling case with lots of airflow?
I have a NZXT H5 , not airflow version but it does have a built in bottom fan as stock and two 140mm rgb front fans as standard, I have a 120 mm at rear and on top, looks pretty and my nvme’s never get over 45 degrees C ( I have 3)
Under full load

What fps are you getting,do you get stutters , are you gpu or frame rate limited?

My rig:
10700k overclocked 4.9ghz
RTX 3080 undervolted 150 mhz
32gb ram 3600 xmp 1 profile
Z490 mobo
850 w PSU
3 nvme’s wd blue ( one dedicated to msfs only)
Air cooling ( tower)
144 mhz at 120 mhz resolution 1440p 27 inch monitor gsync

Msfs: a mixture of ultra/high settings although LOD at 100

Wow that’s a great rig

The kraken is a great AIO from what I have read but as the other poster said I don’t want water cooling , I suspect I might have to go down that route to get your temps but I’m worried about water in my rig

I know they are better in temps and failure is not as bad as they used to be whether that be leaking or pump failure but I would rather stay with air cooling

Thanks for sharing , that’s a super pc you have there

13900KF. But what is best with it, RTX 3090, RTX 4080, or RTX 4090? RTX 4090 in and of itself if best, but is it better to be GPU limited and save some $$ than get RTX 4090 and be CPU limited?

Also an Intel A770 LE GPU.
