Well, I tried going to KCOS (~13 mins after @CasualOne7471 posted) & KICT (~8 mins after @aRazorback4ever posted) & neither heard nor saw thunder or lightning. The storm cells had moved on or died out…
What i think, is its the two sources of weather data. Either meteoblue, or the metars have lightening, and its timing of which or where you load. If the airport has metar data,or not. Only McSobo knows, cause i wont speculate. I know now, it does work, just sporadically, but McSobo will need to figure out which data source msfs is being fed when.
This actually should go without saying, but im so impressed with the integration of all these systems, data sources and suppliers. Yes McSobo is ultimately responsible for the coordination, but im sure they are so frustrated at times with the support they get. I know i was. The servers are not the game studios, trraffic and weather im surprised they work as well as they do. And work together. When meteoblue says the wind is 3 5 0. And flightaware says lets take off on 1 8 0. Thats tough. When i did this, omg, i couldnt get 2 departments to agree, let alone the 30 i had in one system. Everyone was more important than the other. Then integrate that with 4 other data sources because nobody wanted to type in, or knew what engine was in a car? Its tough, and people should cut McSobo some slack, as its not impossible, but what they did is simply amazing, and quite the undertaking. Especially since what we complain about isnt what Asobo is supplying, its servers, the tiles are blurry, weather is incorrect, traffic is goofy, whatever, im still impressed with this undertaking as i know how difficult it is to bring so many A personalities into a room and put it together.
Still havent seen a Single lightning strike in live weather at all in my whole life playing this game. Only time u can see lightning is if u use weather presets or custom weather. Hopefully msfs 2024 can have some Cool Lightning shows at night or in general.
Jigsaw407: We call that “heat lightening”. It is a real thing, it is common in some areas on hot still nights. Probably cloud to cloud at some distance as there is never any thunder with it.
At around 4:30 a.m. cdt early this morning at KDFW, a thunderstorm was definitely in progress. The thunderstorm only lasted about 10 minutes, the wind blew hard for about 3 minutes, then it moved on east and stopped lightning/thundering.
Heat lightning is normal lightning, just too far away for the thunder to be heard. It’s also an artifact of being able to observe the intracloud (IC) lightning in the upper cloud structure that might be obscured by dense clouds to an observer closer to it. It’ll also take on an orangish hue at longer distances due to particulate in the lower layers of the atmosphere. But rest assured that whoever is under that storm is seeing it as “normal” lightning.
I know heat lightning, this ain’t it. Here is actual footage from that very flight, recorded on July 16 2022. Look how sparse these clouds are! No way there would be lightning with clouds like that in the real world. Also notice how the lightning is inside the cockpit too. No, this wasn’t an electrical failure either.
It’s not a matter of believing. It’s a matter of experiencing. It’s great that others see lightning and I believe that they do.
Doesn’t change the fact that I (and many others) didn’t see a single lightning bolt in almost two years. But I guess no matter how many times we say it, they won’t believe us either.
