Yeah, last week I flown for first time in my life in Cessna 152 after hundreds of hours in MSFS and was surprised how handling was similar But MSFS cannot beat real flying at all
For my 70th birthday in April, my wife bought me a Discovery flight in a Cessna 172.
Thanks to MSFS2020, my Logitech yoke, throttle, Saitek rudders etc, I had a basic understanding of flight.
My instructor let me take off and climb to 1500 feet and fly for @25 minutes (seemed longer as I was nervous). I brought the plane down to 500ft and he landed it.
MSFS2020 allowed me to have a better understanding of the real flight.
Definitely become obsessed since MSFS released on the XBOX. Looking forward to having a real yoke to work with as my Thrustmaster HOTAS One is a little tough to use. Even went so far as to look into my PPL. Sadly, due to medical reasons that looks like an extreme long shot for me.
Hoping that MS can figure out away to allow for real simming similar to VATSIM on the XBOX. Otherwise I fear a high end PC is in my future!
Feel free to look me up on live - hinote88
Wish I could do that but it gives me very bad motion sickness and headaches that last the whole day. My roommate has a VR headset and let me try it out a few times.
Nice, those C152 are good fun.
But…seatbelt?
Well what a great response. I really must try VR ! Hats off to those who have made the leap to real life flying. I think that’s in my future some time.
My next challenge is I’m going to start in Skye (Scotland) where my mum’s ancestors are from and work my way down britain across Europe, then down through Asia , Australia to land in my home town Melbourne. Might take me 6 months as my wife likes me to fix stuff around the house and help with the kids.
Happy flying all
Nice experience for you ! Love it !
Define recent! Since I got a ZX spectrum but kicked into high gear with first pc and flight 98/combat 1/ Jane’s world war two fighters
Great you like it!
I started with Flightsimming as a kid, when our family got the first PC. My dad got me FS98 and a bit later he gave me some money and told me “Go get us a joystick!”
From then it was mostly flying the Learjet out of Meigs Field and find some airfields to land at. Then i got interested in finding out how to even properly navigate using VORs and stuff and so i got into it more and more. Keep in mind, in 98 Internet was not very common, utterly slow and youtube tutorials werent a thing. But somehow i figured things out.
I did not miss any MS Flightsim since then and switched to P3D after FSX.
Meanwhile i started my PPL on a C172, have about 30hrs logged and the theoretical exams passed, but well, its on hold since a while due to the virus and stuff…
So, flying on VATSIM in the evenings is my joy after a days work
You should definitely look into VATSIM when you feel ready. It might look very intimidating, but you just have to throw yourself into it. You will learn by doing and it will increase the realism and fun so much.Just tonight im having my first lessons as a VATSIM ATC.
So there is much more to this hobby than just flying if it gets a bit “boring” one day.
Another great and positive thread!
I caught the bug the day I saw the MSFS You Tube trailer back in June 2019.
It literally blew my mind. I didn’t think that was possible, and the walls of my reality came crashing down that day
Bought my first gaming PC (after having XBOX consoles since the first big chunky box) and pre-ordered MSFS for launch day.
And I’ve been having my jaw dropped (and sometimes eyes rolled) ever since.
Motion sickness is awful… Had it once at one of my first trys with vr, was in the spitfire in warthunder… Note to self, pvp aircombat with fast and intense maneuvres is not a good way to start out vr flying… Took some advice and has been flying happily in vr since.
- use a decent quality headset.
- make sure the system used can deliver smooth frames, studdering is a real vomit comet.
- make sure you are seated and in a temperate to cool room.
- start out with very gentle stuff to get they brain comfy with vr. Not fast and twitchy stuff.
- do short sessions of 15-30 mins max.
- if you feel you are getting warm or other bad signs, stop and walk away for at least a few hours.
The brain will normally associate the visual disconnect from the lack of real movement and g forces with the body being poisoned, hence putting you in a state that would encourage vomiting to releave you of the poisonous food you ate (primal stuff) however with a slow transition and adaption to vr this can in most cases be avoided.
But then again everyone is different, hope it will work out for you though.
Happy flying.
There is a saying among pilots, at least in Germany I‘‘ve heard it a lot:
„Flying is stupid, expensive and dangerous, just like all drugs. But we‘re addicted.“
I think if you‘re the type of person who likes to fly it‘s easy and fast to can‘t stop anymore, regardless if real or sim.
Atari 2600/NES/SNES/Sega Genesis/PS1/PS2/Xbox/Ps3/Xbox1/Ps4…
And last November I purchased a pc strictly for this sim that I tried out at a friend’s prior.
I’m currently up to over 2000k hours logged flying and am purposely remaining ignorant to a lot of things because I plan on stretching this sim out for YEARS. I haven’t even done the bush trips yet. I can land a plane like a sunnuva you know what, but I’m still a complete newb when it comes to proper flying.
In time.
