1:1 cockpit

In another thread, someone mentioned converting the cockpit models to draw radios and gauges from.
I thought “What a cool idea”. So I tried it with a whole cockpit. First the 172, then the Bell 407. It seems like a neat idea to build a 1:1 replica so that being able to reach out for the switches and dials is accurate.
The STLs still need to be cleaned up but it may just work.
The 407 at my current progress. Still a lot to do.

…and what is the overall idea?

3D-print all parts, put switches and knobs, wire them into an interface card, write the code to trigger offsets in MSFS - with other words: the whole nine yards of cockpit building?

If so, good luck! It‘ll be a huge project (been there, done that…)

How about starting with a junked 172 cockpit and filling in what’s missing? I always thought that would make an awesome VR build. Then you wouldn’t need hand controllers or have to worry about prints or lighting.

This will be my 3rd pit, first rotor wing. I’m a fan of helicopters. Been flying the Huey in DCS for years now. Just waiting for MSFS to add them. Would rather do a Huey but the 407 will suffice for the now.
The great thing about using the in-game aircraft model is that all the physical "stuff will line up with the sim.

Have you seen the size and cost of a junked 172? Easier to build from scratch. Check out the Show your cockpit thread in homebuilt section. Careful, it can be addictive.

Thinking out loud here

Can we possibly use AR in the near future with the Pimax 12k pass through mode to look at our real hardware

Yeah, I didn’t mean the whole plane, but damaged pieces that would never be airworthy. I see a lot of that stuff floating around at flea markets and junkyards, but it’s probably tough to find usable pieces that aren’t expensive.

There’s a program currently on Steam called Reality Mixer. It uses the pass-through camera. It’s pretty cool, but the pass-through is B&W and low resolution. I use it to see my button box. He’s working on making it work with a webcam.
