Tonight’s flight:
CYLW - Kelowna to CZBB - Boundary Bay/Vancouver
Aircraft: BlackSquare B60T 2020
Flight plan: IFR
Cruise: FL240
Real weather, custom time: 8:36am
XBOX X, Honeycomb alpha yoke, beta throttle, XBOX controller, keyboard, mouse
Departure:
Ground textures much better than 1.4.10. Traffic wasn’t just pointy nosed default aircraft - followed Citation CJ4 during taxi, which as cool.
Duke picks up more FOD in the beta versions than the live version, requiring anti-ice to prevent engine damage when taxiing, no matter the airport.
ATC window still struggles to accept mouse clicks which causes delays in responses to ATC. The keyboard works around this but still not great. No ATC over-talk, which is an improvement.
EFB worked decent this time for the flight planning and uploaded the RNAV approach at CZBB without issue, instead of the ILS defaults that I have been experiencing (RNAV selected, ILS uploaded). There are only RNAV options at CZBB but I wouldn’t have been surprised if it would permit a precision approach if it couldn’t selected an ILS option. ATC gave descent instructions with plenty of time to get down but left me high at the transition so glideslope didn’t get captured and had to manually decrease altitude to intercept the gs.
LOD was great from ground to cruise without any weird and abrupt scenery elements bursting out of the ground into visibility. The LOD while on gs was much improved from 1.4.10. The long range LOD resolution was the best I’ve seen in any version of 2024. There was a noticeable frame rate decrease but it wasn’t worse than MSFS202. I’d say it was a fair trade and huge improvement.
Weather was intense with heavy rain. Oddly, heavy rain at -40 @FL240 and no icing? Not super realistic so something to consider for the next build?
Audio was more stable on this build and as for video, there were a couple of jitters on climb out and on approach, but only felt like single frames.
Fun flight! Interesting weather with 50kt headwinds, heavy cloud below and thing cirrus above during cruise. Heavy rain, crosswind landing - and maybe the best MSFS2024 flying experience so far, all things considered.
