Stayed up late to try out SU4 and I have to say, wow. I am blown away by how much of an improvement this is. I just flew DTNH to LIRF in the A332. Not one single stutter. Not even a micro stutter. By far the smoothest flight I’ve done on 2024. The LOD distance looks to be shorter but I genuinely think it looks better. The near vicinity of my camera view was consistently nice and crisp without blurring. It feels like 24 has caught up to 2020 performance levels. I’ll try not to get too excited yet as I’ve only done one flight and the servers tend to be smoother at night for me (which is when I flew). I’m also taking into consideration I saw no multiplayer traffic, which I assume plays its part.

The menus seem to be much improved also. I had no issues with lagging or wait times whilst I loaded the sim up and got myself set up in a free flight.

The only issue that did occur was with sound. Nothing major but sound periodically seemed to cut out and the noises associated with switches and buttons in the cockpit seemed to randomly stop working and then come back again.

1 hour VFR flight CYBL to CZBB in Carenado F33A

peripherals:

Honeycomb Alpha/Bravo throttle and you, keyboard, mouse, Xbox controller.

Scenery sliders at default.

PG on

Live traffic and weather

Multiplayer on

The smoothness of the loading graphics and the complete loading of all the main screen elements at start up is notable.

Taxi was smooth and jitter free, as was departure and climb out.

Cruise was at 4500. The scenery blended unnoticed with no popping up.

Approaching Vancouver, the city popped up when I look to port when joining the pattern for CZBB.

Approach and landing was silky smooth, though the parked traffic at CZBB did not appear until I was rolling out.

Overall I would give the performance of this release a high rating. This is a very good first effort!

Upon first load couldn’t connect to servers,.reboot xbox

Tried to change and reset rolling cache it looped forever, reboot xbox

Finally got into SU4, immediate improvement on UX much snappier.

World map and EFB much snappier great stuff

Loading 747 free flight, takes 5 minutes+ at YSSY, finally at Sydney airport gate, the LOD takes an age to lock in, definitely feels and looks better, the skyline in the distance is robust. But once I turned the plane on everything turned to chaos. Stuttering traffic, poor textures and LOD everywhere, in the cockpit outside, changing camera texter delays and lag, just a disaster. Started taxi didn’t get any better. Quit flight. I’ll try again later, it’s always a moody sim and the 747 is the spiciest test, that 3rd engine art thingy isn’t fixed, actually nothing in the plane is improved it’s not in the patch notes so don’t expect much in the queen still got lotsa problems. I’ll give the longitude a crack coz I know it can make the sim shine in release build

Installation of the beta went well. Restarted Xbox and got straight in quickly. Menus do feel better but I’ll play around with them more once I’ve done a flight. Aircraft livery selection actually showed the aircraft with the livery when I selected it before going back which it has never done for me

Loaded in with the A20N at inibuilds EGLL (24 upgrade version) and while there were a few stutters and the occasional freeze when the ground textures decided to unload and reload again, it was actually usable unlike in SU3. So far so good

Inibuilds Heathrow (24 upgrade) to Pyreegue Edinburgh 2 in the A0N. This wouldn’t have been possible on SU3 so the fact that it was tolerable says something

Ended the flight, played about in menus and marketplace etc - all definitely feeling better

Restarted Xbox (series X by the way) and went for another round. This time, inibuilds A359 from LVFR Madrid to Feelthere Schiphol. I’ve got to say, on the ground at Madrid my mind was blown. It was silky smooth. Like 2020 SU16 smooth. Taxi and takeoff were absolutely perfect. Will report back on the landing

Second flight completed, this time using the A350 from default LIRF to inibuilds EGLL. Same settings.

Taxi and departure out of Rome was the smoothest I’ve ever had in the A350. Flight was perfect. Approach and landing were awful. Constant ground textures popping and 2 second stutters every 10 seconds or so.

Could it just be the A350? Could it be inibuilds Heathrow coupled with London modelled buildings despite not PG? Could it be both… who knows.

Will try the A350 elsewhere to compare but that approach landing was in line with mid SU3 beta performance.

Much the same as Global Javan, the A350 was good until I got close to Schiphol where the freezes every couple of seconds started from which it didn’t recover. So it could just be the A350 plus heavy scenery on arrival. But more testing needed at lighter airports to see how that goes compared to SU3

Deleted the reserved space before installing SU4. So, new cache and everything streamed.

Xbox X. All options on Medium, but wildlife off.
32GB cache. Live weather, multiplayer, traffic, all ON (let’s really force it).

There’s a noticeable improvement in fluidity compared to version 1.5.27. It’s noticeable that the “price” was a lower quality of some textures, but I don’t think it was a bad trade-off.

Again, I insist that the render distance needs to be improved, especially when flying airliners.

It should be a priority to review why the simulator runs out of memory and freezes for a second, a large part of the scenery disappears, and reloads a few seconds later (usually during approach). It usually happens two or three times, regardless of whether it’s a large airport like LAX, Heathrow, Atlanta, or a regional airport. It also doesn’t matter if it’s an add-on or auto-generated.

I’ve noticed several “sim freezes,” which I think are related to ATC talking.

And moments where the sound cuts out, but then resumes. This usually indicated that a CTD was about to occur (fortunately, I haven’t had any so far).

Too many issues with third party add ons so far.

Yes of course it’s a beta - but when there are a lot of problems - and there seem to be with this build - in my opinion you can’t come to any valid conclusions regarding performance - doubtless the lightning fast load times and fluidity are related to the lack of functionality elsewhere… (WASM issues ?) let’s hope not but it most likely will turn out that way

so far - Aerosoft CRJ won’t load into a flight, Flight FX Citation X - loads into black screens.

The Just Flight RJ loaded and flew - and was very smooth but I encountered system problems on approach - AT wouldn’t disarm and throttles refused to go into idle, hydraulics then failed…

Will try my F28 and 777s later on…

so far not a great start but will go through the normal troubleshooting process and try again later just in case….

Haven’t tried the PMDG 777s yet -

edit: None of the PMDG aircraft work, the Just Flight F28 loads fine.

Cautionary note. The first SU16 beta had WASM issues (it hasn’t happened very often but when it does it is a significant problem) but many who flew and tested non-WASM aircraft experienced superbly smooth performance. Trouble is that WASM is a fundamental component of the simulator - any test results obtained from a beta that does not have fully functioning WASM should be treated with caution - as they are unlikely to be very representative - we know from experience that the demands of WASM affects performance.

Edit 2: so the Just Flight RJ and F28 have lack of brakes and other hydraulic systems so WASM type issues there too…

Redid my Schiphol to Madrid flight but this time in the A330-300. Performance was hugely better in this but still a couple of small freezes on final and after touchdown when it decided to unload and reload the runway textures. But Schiphol is a very demanding addon that wasn’t usable before SU16 on 2020 so I’ll take that and resume testing when I can get back on the sim in a couple of days. In the meantime, a video is worth 1000 words

Trouble is that WASM related issues are here again - being widely reported - so we aren’t evaluating a representative product right now. - once the WASM issues are fixed (hopefully soon) we shall see what we see but we already know that often when WASM isn’t implemented correctly in a build we see drastically improved load times and performance….

Edit - it’s too broken just now for any meaningful performance assessment - will go,back to 2020 until next build or WASM fix, whichever comes sooner - it was a fortnight of wasted time with SU16, hope there’s a bit more urgency to fix this build,

Very impressed with SU4 beta so far. I’ve only really been flying the A20N and the A321N, but performance has been much better than SU3. The horrible micro stutters when going to external view have gone and the sim feels much more fluid now and smooth. I’m still getting the odd 1 second freeze on the ground whilst taxiing sometimes, and also on final approach. They aren’t as bad as before though especially on final approach where I could get 3 or 4 freezes before touchdown, along with very bad stuttering. Looking forward to what the next update brings. Keep up the good work

Improvement !!!

performed 4 flights using 3rd party airports I typically fly from (LSZH, YSSY, LDZA, and new addition EGBB) and yes there is great improvement with overall performance (significantly less stutters).

Had an odd issue with Thrustmaster Airbus TCA controls. It worked initially after the update then 12 hrs later (after restart, new flight same aircraft) the throttle quadrant was not working correctly. Several restarts, controllers setting resets, still no fix then all of a sudden it started working!!?!?!. I reported it and monitoring.

Photogrammetry around Zurich is shocking, everything is in the shape of pyramids with slow loading but some trees never load correctly. Disabling and re enabling photogrammetry didn’t fix it. I have removed (uninstalled and disabled) Smaller Trees Pro add on thinking that could be a problem but no difference.

Fun times testing continues

Regarding the Thrustmaster TCA: I have noticed, on 2 different flights and with a sim restart in between. When I put the gear lever down, the sim did nothing. I have to put it back up and down again to the sim actually register the down action.

Will check today if the issue persist or was “magically” fixed.
