120hz vs 90hz

Hello everyone, I’ve been playing with settings for a year now and I get most of it but there is still something that boggles me. Whenever I set the refresh rate to 90 HZ or less I get the worst performance than if I set it at 120 HZ. How can this be? I read on forums that if your system cannot handle higher refresh rate you should lower it, but in my case it’s the opposite. Thank you for clarifying.

Can you post your settings and AVG fps in game.

I have a 3070, 10,700k 32gb ram.

72hz (1.5x super sample FOV in debug of .75,.72) running and average of 32-36fps solid no matter where I fly at mainly high settings in game bar some key frame killer settings. The only aircraft that pushes my frames down is the fbw a320nx whicj at a heavy airport will drop to about 27fps.

I have tried 120hz and did not feel I had a better outcome. At the end of the day in game, it will down sample (might not be using the right terminology) to 30fps so, at 72hz I get an extra 6 frames per second.

I’ve never understood refresh rates. Maybe its because I’m nearly 48 and old but whenever I’ve tested in game or even benchmarks like Dirt rally benchmark 72Hz feels more fluid to my eyes. I can’t perceive any difference between 72 and 90 other than at full resolution games ran a little worse at 90 hz.
