1440p Monitor Advice/Recommendations

I keep going in circles on what I want as monitor for my 9800x3d/7900xt/64 GB Ram build that i just completed.

The desire of the build was to get in to Flight Sims so the thought of a 34-inch Ultrawide is very appealing. However, Flight Sim won’t be the only thing the build will be used for and I worry about the Ultra Wide not being suitable for other activities and games outside of sims. (Edit: including non-game programs). So now I’m wondering if I should be focusing back on 16:9 monitors.

If you were in my shoes what would you look for in a monitor? I am currently on a 27" 1080p Dell (P2719H). I’ve been trying to keep it below $400 but not sure how realistic that is.

Thanks in advance!

Don’t be. I use a 32in 3440x1440 ultra wide, and it’s great for all kinds of games and anything else I put on it!

I have a 35" 3440 x 1440 monitor which is great for everything.

I have a 49" Samsung G9 at 5120 x 1440 and it works great for everything. Prior to this I had a 34" ultrawide which was great for everything as well. You will be absolutely fine.

Thank you for the feedback. What do you use?

I guess it’s a 34 inch, not 32… My memory isn’t what it used to be.

Sceptre - good and inexpensive. C355W-3440UN fairly old model.

You’ve got a solid build including 20GB vram which is more than capable of driving a 4k monitor. Keep in mind a monitor 3840 pixels wide will show more game horizontally than 3440 pixels plus you’ll have more vertically. I use a 55" 4k Oled TV which has all the gaming features of a high end monitor like 144Hz refresh, freesync, low latency mode etc and it works great for gaming.

I agree with @WingWarper1 on this - if you can find an affordable one, I would try for a 4K monitor.

I changed from a good quality Asus 1440p to an MSI 4K QD-OLED and the improvement in visuals is huge. You have a GPU that can cope with 4K, so I would veer towards trying to get the absolute best out of the PC.

Biggest I can go for my desk is probably 32 or 34 inches, otherwise I’d love to go the TV route.

For 4k then I should be targeting 32" then?

27" would be a waste for 4k wouldn’t it?

When not ultrawide does curved really make sense?

As @MagicQuasar1176 indicated I would go as big as your budget can afford - I actually have my 55" TV mounted to the wall so I can maximize my desk space. I think 27" for a 4k monitor would not be advisable.

Just make sure it has the gaming features you need - you won’t regret it! :star_struck:

I totally agree with the latest comment by @WingWarper1.

27in / 1440p is a sweet spot - it’s bigger than a regular work-type monitor, and the resolution gives you better visuals. 4K would look slightly better at 27in, but much less so than on a larger screen.

Ultrawide or curved options are really down to your preferences, and what will fit in the space available. My 32in 4K monitor has to be on the desk as I use it for work also, and given the little corner my office is in I couldn’t have gone very much larger even, if it was on the wall.

One thing that makes a big improvement in immersion for me is the use of a Tobii 5 head / eye tracker. Without the need to wear a hat or headset, you get 180 degrees panoramic vision from a single flat monitor. This brings it much closer to the effects you get from a multi-screen setup or a VR headset, but without the bulk, cost, complexity and considerable further downsides of those approaches.

Again as WW1 mentioned, if you can find a 4K tv that maxes out the space available then go for it, but do check it has some suitable gaming features too. Most modern ones have at least a few in order to accommodate consoles & other external devices.

Useful things are: Low input lag, high refresh rate (although this isn’t essential for MSFS, it can still make things smoother), Freesync or G-Sync, HDR, Display Port input and maybe a Game Mode then that would be great. TV’s also usually pay a bit more attention to audio quality than PC monitors (if they even have speakers at all), but a soundbar or hi-fi would still be better.

I specifically chose the 32in MSI MPG321URX 4K QD-OLED monitor to get the best possible visuals I could in the space I have available. It has DP, HDR, 0.03ms response time & 240hz refresh rate. It definitely makes MSFS + Tobii 5 smoother, but it was way over the stated budget here when I bought it.

If you can find a 32in or larger 4K tv which is in budget, has some gaming features and maxes out the space you have available, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Thank you both for the feedback, it is greatly appreciated.

I think the biggest my space will accommodate right now is no bigger than 32" at 4k. I will have to research that some to see what fits my budget as up to now I was pretty much focused on 1440p (mostly to get longevity out of my build). Looks like I might have to stretch the budget a bit at 4k though, so may need to wait for possible sales.

What are your thoughts on buying Open Box at electronic stores? Should that be avoided?

Great question! I buy a good bit of computer equipment and have purchased open box items quite often. I only do this at stores that I trust such as Amazon (great return policy) and Mico Center. At MC they will let me view/inspect the item 1st before buying which I greatly appreciate. I’ve purchased graphics cards, memory, dolby atmos soundbars, hard disks even the Asrock Taichi motherboard I’m currently using was an open box item.

These items are typically products returned within the retail stores 15-30 day return window so nothing that’s been severely abused.

Buying open box is not for everyone however you can definitely find great bargains. I highly recommend minimizing your risk with items that are returnable and have a full warranty.

I have two Micro Centers that are within driving distance, in fact the closer one is where I bought some of the parts for my new build.

I’ve started watching their Open Box deals to see if anything pops up. I’ll have to keep that up

If you have two shops nearby, definitely keep an eye on what they have available as Open Box.

If an item like a monitor or TV is returned because the buyer found it to be the wrong size or aesthetic to what they intended, changed their mind due to the cost or whatever, then there’s no reason to shy away if it’s something you want.

As long as you would also be able to register and benefit from the warranty, or return it in the event of a fault, like dead pixels or a damaged screen etc., then I wouldn’t have any concerns.

Are Samsung Odyssey really as bad as the reviews make them out to be? There is an open box for Neo G8 for $675. Seems like a good price. Odyssey seems to test well on rating sites but when it comes to review like on Amazon there are a lot of negatives.

Since December I’ve been using the 2K MSI MAG 271QPX QD-OLED E2 monitor. Ever since I got it, I know that “black” really is black - no more ips glow or blb you get on other screens like IPS. I can’t imagine flying in MSFS at night on anything but an OLED now.
